This beer is very delightful on cask at the Forectasters pub at the brewery. It is very dark, nearly black, with a creamy light tan, very foamy head. The head retains nicely and leave big lace around the glass. It has toasty, scarcely mocha smells, but theres not much in the nose. The first thing about the cask conditioned version is the terrifically creamy mouthfeel, it is a superbly rounded smooth substantial beer with the hops coming on slowly behind the darkly roasted malted barley tastes which are coffee, grainy, and tangy. The hops are unfortunately non-descript and seem to be doing more bittering than flavoring. The finish is medium length, and I think a more distinctive hop profile would go a long way toward fixing this. Its a very drinkable beer though, and on the low-side of the 5%-6% abv mark, so nearly a session beer. I think the casked version is much more drinkable than the other manifestations of this beer.

12oz bottle served in pint glass
A - opaque dark brown; minimal head (perhaps bottle beyond best by date); some sediment
S floral and spicy; hoppy for style /subtle (light)
T - good. Modest complexity. Slightly earthy. Malty finish
M - a bit creamy, but a bit of a bite too

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a small head. Smell is of roasted malts. Taste is of malts, some hints of coffee, finishing a tad bitter. Feels medium bodies in the mouth and has decent drinkability. Overall this is a good quality beer.

Pours a dark brown/black color, not much carbonation or head, what head there is fades very fast and leaves no lacing.
Smell is pretty much all roasted malt with a hint of coffee.
Taste is also all roasted malt with a hint of coffee bitterness in the aftertaste, carbonation is low but presence, bit of a buttery slickness to the mouthfeel.
A fairly standard porter (much better on nitro though).

12 oz bottle dated for freshness, poured into a pint glass.
appearance is good - medium to dark brown in color with a creamy 2 finger head that clams down quickly. leaves some nice leggy lacing behind.
smells mostly of toasted malts with a bit of chocolate and dark fruit.
taste follows nose, but adds roasted and carmel malts with some mild bitterness at the end. very malt forward.
mouthfeel is pretty good. lighter and with more co2 than i was expecting, but has a bit of a syrupy quality.
drinkable, but the syrupy feel may prove to be a bit much after 2-3 of these. overall a pretty solid beer that i will be buying again.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a pint glass.
Appearance: quite dark with some brown hints when held up to a light source. One finger of quickly dissipating light tan head.
Smell: nice roasty aroma with plenty of chocolate and a little coffee. Pretty good.
Taste: nice bitter flavor up front; there is a hint of chocolate flavor that complements the bitterness well. Aftertaste develops into a slightly astringent roasted flavor with a slight flavor of ash or burnt wood. Quite interesting -- I like it.
Mouthfeel: medium body but pretty high carbonation for the style. It's not really creamy in texture, but it is pretty smooth.
Drinkability: a solid porter. I wouldn't hesitate to have a couple of these in most settings.
