From bottle no. 033-10. Sampled on April 27, 2011. I did like the cloudy copper-amber pour. There are plenty of malts in the aroma along with a vibrant floral hoppy character. But there is also something very berry-like in the scent. The body comes up full. The taste has a floral hoppy richness with a nice dose of caramel malts on the back end. It did not come across as boozy as most of the Barleywines I have had.

12 oz bottle was poured into a snifter. 2010 bottle version bottles on 8/31/10.

Appearance: This beer poured a dismal head that has reduced to an outer ring. It is a copper amber haze with no clarity, but slow moving bubbles can be seen coming up the side of the glass.

Smell: Toffee, butterscotch, caramel malty goodness. The citrus hops have held up well with the last 2.5 years. Grapefruit and tangerine goodness. That's awesome.

Taste: malts are there, but the bitterness is more noticeable in the taste. Amazing.

Mouthfeel: Silky smooth, full bodied, low to medium bodied, tingly bitterness, and finishes a little dry too.

Overall: A nice barleywine. It should the test of time, but the malts could have balanced things out a bit more from this hop bomb.

Nice appearance and aroma, but the taste fades. Might have sat on this too long, which is surprising for a 2010 barleywine. Not a bad barleywine but others at the same price point are much better. I remember having this when it first came out and it had a better bite to it. Aging doesn't help this beer, but instead, hurts it.

Strong, fruity aroma has notes of sweet apple and banana and a malty undertone plus a touch of yeast. It pours a clear, dark copper, almost mahogany, with a fluffy and rather persistent beige head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Fruity flavor is rather brandy-like, what I expect from a good barleywine, with a fair alcohol bite and a woody undertone. It is a bit sweet, and the flavor lacks depth; still, it is pleasing. Texture has above-average body but only average fizz, and leaves a fruity and woody finish. I’ve had better, but this is acceptable.

Bottle of 2010, bottled date of 3-30-10, poured on 1-19-12. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a bright, reddish brown coloring that is opaque and smooth in appearance, with a thin ring of bubbling around the edge of the surface. Aromas of slight roasting and very heavy malt presence, with an interesting fruit blend of what seems to be pineapple and other tropical fruits, and a subtle hopping at the tail end. Flavors are heavier in the fruit sweet blend, but with a more prominent hops profile. The hops are very piney, with a heavy roasting at the end of the palate. The heavy malt aromas play out into a more subtle, toffee malt backbone that brings balance to the lighter, spicier characteristics. The aftertaste is more of a toffee tang, with a good kick of the pineapple flavor. The finish is quick, and surprisingly clean for the style, as well as for this particular beer with all the malty and fruit sweetness throughout it. Solid Barleywine.
