A-dark burnt umber with 3+ finger head that sticks around awhile

S-when first pouring it into the glass my initial impression was coffee but in the glass I get chocolate and pine

T-here the coffee shows again with a little chocolate

M-lots of fizzy carbonation

O-not great or terrible but probably not something I would revisit

330ml bottle. ½ Pint glass. Enjoyed on apr´12. Black color headed by creamy, light beige, medium to small bubbled, froth. Thick crown, good retention. Roasted malt, coffee grain aromas, slightly woody touch& earthy hues. Dry bitter, a bit acidic, at first sip balanced by sweet roasted malts. Subtle fruity hints in the middle. Full to medium body, moderate carbonation. Montseny mountain water close it to Style.

Very dark brown body with a thick, tan head.

Rich, dark, sweet chocolate dominates the smell, closely followed with roasted grain and dark roast coffee.

Very strange taste, nothing like the smell. A strong sourness hits you right off. Very little roasted graininess or chocolate notes. Bitterness is pretty well-hidden behind the sour taste.

Mouthfeel is light with little body. Finishes fairly cleanly.

A very disappointing beer. If the taste could get any where near what the aroma hints at, then this would be a respectable brew. As such, this is a weak example of a stout and not recommended.

I know, I know....Lupulus laid an egg. But that wasn't enough to try the portfolio's stout. I'm dubbling this "Operation: Cannot Possibily Fail A Second Time". Coming out of the 330 ml format, on to the beer:

Rather attractive at first. Ink black color, slightly tanned foam, semi-soapy head that's more than a finger's thick. A few particles of sediment do appear in the glass, though you will need to look hard and close at the glass to find them. The retention and lace provided are fine. I've learned not to get overly excited about sight however, as the nose is not gernally exciting. There is a soft roasted cocoa note that I like, esters are alright, also a decent sized phenolic/band-aid aroma that interrupts whatever harmony is there. Let's go on.

A tale of two traits. In here, you get the good Irish stout flavor and also that flavor of infection. Chocolate syrup and roasted, astringent malts make a simple yet delightful flavor, and on the other hand is a bittering (like ash), somewhat plasticy tasting note that seems to take more and more space. The mouthfeel is on the lighter side, very astringent, and a little overcarbonated.

Brewing infection-free beer is a skill, and it is a skill that Cervesera del Montseny doesn't hold. For the $4.99 it cost for the bottle, I could have bought a bomber of Arrogant Bastard, or a Baconator, or a pound of bacon, or an Aventinus...whatevers, I'm over it.

A huge, dense, meringue head, similar in color to coffee ice cream, pushes clean up out of a Roosterfish pint glass. The beer is dark brown, almost black, with slight red highlights. Ultimately, lacing coats the glass as the head slowly turns to sea foam.

Sweet and malty, with molasses and malted milk. Light fruitiness and mustiness.

The flavors follow the nose, though slightly more chocolate. Sweetness dominates, but does not obliterate the bitterness which is most noticeable in the finish.

This one is creamy with a light body and fair carbonation. Ultimately, this one is quite dry.

A fine drinking beer to sit and enjoy. Unfortunately, the flavors are a bit muddy.

A: Pours very dark amber to black with a fluffy mocha head which dissipates over time and some lacing.

S: Roasted malts, slight hint of chocolate and a little citrusy hops.

T: Strong flavors from the roasted malts followed by unsweetened chocolate and slight bitterness. Not a lot of complexity in the taste.

M: Medium bodied and creamy with moderate carbonation.

O: Enjoyable, not the best and not the worst in the style. First Spanish beer that I reviewed and I would definitely have it again. The alcohol is easily hidden in this beer.

Bought a 8.2oz Bottle of this from Lukas Liquor in Ellisville, MO for $4.99 (Highly Recommended from the Lukas Staff). Poured from the bottle that has what appears to be a Gecko on the front in black into my LongHammer IPA Pint Glass. No Freshness Date on the bottle.

Aroma- Roast Barley, Malts with awesome Chocolate Aroma! Very sweet and strong through whole smell.

Appearance- Pours a 6 finger, dark brown head! Long lasting and leaves good lacing. The body is the deepest brown you can get and opaque.

Flavor- Nice roasted grain and HUGE chocolate taste here. This is an unsweetened chocolate taste and is very creamy. Light bitterness and light coffee finish.

Mouthfeel- Full bodied, Creamy, High Carbonation, but watery and doesn't leave much on the palate.

Overall Impression- I think this is one of my top 5 stouts I've ever had! It had so much complexity, the drink keeps you thinking and discussing all the way through! This is my first beer from this Brewery and I'm glad I was able to get my hands on some @ Lukas. This was one of their featured beers and I can see why.

I had to pick this bottle up at the store solely because it's from Spain. I LOVE Spain! This beer hissed upon opening. It poured a medium bodied hazelnut brown, getting darker the longer the pour. It had a two finger medium khaki head that took a couple minutes to calm down. It smells of light roasted coffee beans and roasted caramel malts. It also has a light smoke element. It's pretty dry on the nose. The flavor is a nice mix of roasted coffee and bitter chocolate. The chocolate sweetens with time. It kind of tastes like iced coffee. I'm decently surprised. It has almost a perfect mouthfeel for the style and finishes pretty well. I really didn't expect it to be of this caliber. It's a very good representation of an Irish Dry Stout. I'd recommend trying it.

Translucent dark nut brown with orange edges and an expansive crown of ecru colored foam. This is a stout and not a brown ale, right? The head becomes a rocky mesa with melting and there's a fair amount of soap sudsy lace in a fishnet pattern.

The nose is half brown ale and half roasted malty stout. At least we're moving in the right direction. There's an earthiness that should not be present in the stated style, and hints of an off-aroma that might ruin things on taste bud contact.

CCM Negra Stout is a fair-to-middlin' attempt at an Irish dry stout. It's also a little better than this brewery's 'English' pale ale, but whether or not it deserves a higher score will have to be determined by the last 10 ounces.

There's a malt deficient that is responsible for a corresponding malt flavor deficit. Each sip delivers a passing glance of iced coffee, dark chocolate and bitter black tea. There are no real off-flavors... and very few on-flavors. At least they got the dry part right.

The mouthfeel is on the lighter end of a style whose typical version's mouthfeel is on the light end to begin with. It's also too buzzy to start, though to be fair, it does settle down by the middle portion of the bottle.

The bottom line is that Cervesera del Montseny Negra Stout is an average Irish dry stout. To my knowledge, Spain is not a hotbed of craft brewing. So far, it doesn't look like these guys are the ones to put them on the map.

Brought from Spain to the tasting. Pours a dark brown with thick tan head. Smells a litle bit sour, but not much that it was horrible. Flavour has a small amount of roast. Big carbonation level. Gets better as I keep drinking, though I didn't really want to keep drinking.

Jason's bottle, brought from Spain. Medium brown, big cheesy head. Sour in aroma. You can see the carbonation bubbles. Coffee grounds and horse blanket - in the taste! Even Guiness is better as a stout.Carbonation right there. Youc an drink some of it.

A - Clearish brown with a huge long lasting tannish head. Lots of lacing.

S - Coffee, chocolate, raisins, lite alcohol and toasty malts.

F/M - Dark bitter baker's chocolate, coffee, roasty dark malts, lite earthy hops, moderate bitterness accentuated by the dark roasted malts. medium body with moderately high CO2, almost effervescent. Very clean finish. Lite chocolaty aftertaste.

D - Great, finishes clean and dry. Easy drinking.

Presentation: Poured from an 11.2 oz brown bottle into an Imperial pint glass. Label is black, brown and red, depicting some type of red eyed animal and a few other minimalist shapes. No freshness coding.

Appearance: Very energetic beer requires pouring in stages. Initial pour yields 5+ fingers of medium tan head. This slowly settles to a still substantial cap of foam, leaving behind fairly good lacing. The beer itself is dark brown with hints of ruby and nearly opaque.

Smell: Strong lactic sourness against a backdrop of roasted barley and bitter coffee.

Taste: All the requisite flavors for a dry Irish stout; roasted barley bitterness, bitter coffee and dark cocoa, and an underlying acidity. Finish is not as dry as it should be, with a slightly cloying sweetness.

Mouthfeel: slightly lower than average carbonation, as expected for this style. Body is good.

Drinkability: While everything else seems to fall in place, I just can't get past some of the off flavors in the taste of this one. Too bad.

A: The beer poured very dark amber in color (near black) with a two finger high beige head that has good retention properties. A moderate amount of carbonation is visible.
S: There are light aromas of roasted malts in the nose along with some hints of chocolate.
T: Like the smell, flavors of dark roasted malts dominate the overall taste. Bitter notes of chocolate and coffee become noticeable as the beer warms up.
M: It feels light-bodied and a bit thin on the palate. There is a moderate amount of dryness.
D: The beer is very easy to drink and goes down smoothly. I would have no problem finishing more than one of them in a single sitting.

Bottle at a random bar in Barcelona.

Pours one shade from black with a 1.5-finger tan head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving light lacing.

Smells of lightly roasted malts with mild amounts of cocoa powder. As it warms the light roastiness fades and nondescript dark malts come more into play.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Dark malt flavors with hints of roasted malts kick things off. Midway through the sip the flavors sweeten a bit and light chocolate flavors come into play. The chocolate flavors fade near the end of the sip before a mildly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is OK. It's slightly on the thin side with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I didn't have a problem finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this is a decent beer but nothing special. A nice and light stout that's tasty but not worth seeking out.

Very deep mahogany, with a thick, frothy cream-colored head that remains. Thick lacing.
Smell is slightly roasted malts, with some subtle hints of cocoa and milk chocolate. Little bit of toffee and caramel as well.
Taste is roasted malts, with notes of dark chocolate, cocoa, as well as some very faint notes of coffee. Slightly acidic near the finish. Finish is slightly malty with a touch of ash.
Mouthfeel is dry and light. A tad bit watery.
Drinkability is good. Not bad; I'd definitely take this before a guinness.

picked this up at the Pizza Port Bottle Shop in Carlsbad, CA

I was very intrigued to see a few craft beers from Spain, so I ignored the $6 price tag for 330mL and grabbed one.

It was a gusher - 2/3 head in my glass. Roasted malty notes in the nose, though not as strong as I expected. Some coffee and more maltiness, perhaps a lil bit of walnut. Again not terribly strong. The more I drank the more I enjoyed the taste. There was some slight dubbel taste to it too.

Decent beer, but for that price you can better and more.

Pours a clear, dark brown color. One inch head of a tan color. Great retention and decent lacing. Smells of oatmeal, sweet malt, yeast, slight roasted malt, and slight hops. Fits the style of an Irish Dry Stout. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp with a high carbonation level. The finish is a little watery. Tastes of roasted malt, coffee, slight alcohol, hint of hops, and slight dark citrus. Overall, a good blend and body, but high carbonation hurts.

Another of the Stanzi stash from her recent trip to Frisco. Poured into 10oz glass. The beer poured black, like a good stout should, with a tall dark khaki head that kept growing after I stopped pouring, eventually reaching a peak more than an inch above the rim of the glass. Needless to say, retention and lacing were very good.

The aroma was a subdued malt and roast scent. The flavors were also very subdued, but certainly roast and grain were dominant. This is a nice example of the style, flavorwise, but not outstanding.

Body was smooth and full, as is typical for the style. Drinkability was very good, also typical for the style. Overall, a nice, if not exceptional, example of the style. Worth a shot if you see it.
