American Stout |  5.80% ABV

Availability: Rotating. bottle (41), on-tap (1)

Notes:
Named for those rugged people who work and play in the woods! This Gnarly Stout rises to the task, being a bit chewy and a hefty 5.8% ABV, cranking plenty of Challenger and Perle hops. The perfect days end for the Stump Jumper in all of us. Brewed with pale, crystal, black, chocolate roasted malts, oats, flaked barley, Perle and Challenger hops.

Pours dark brown in color. Looked good on the pour. There's a nice, frothy light brown head of about an inch.
Smell is black patent malt, some roast, and a wee bit of dark bakers chocolate. Mostly malt in the nose.
Taste is bitter and astringent. More dark roasted malts, some nice herbal hops in the flavor as well. Leaves some nice webby lacing on the inside of the glass as well.
Hops continue to dominate the flavor later on. Good bitterness and carbonation. Decent beer.

Picked up a bomber from Total Wine at the end of March for $1.99.

Beer was a bit of a gusher upon opening. When things settled down it poured dark brown with a tan head that dissipated quickly.

Not a whole lot going on with the nose. Hints of roasted malts and lactic sweetness are present.

Taste is chocolate roasted malts with a nice bitter hop finish.

Mouthfeel is light to medium bodied with no redeeming smoothness.

Overall a pleasant brew but nothing overly exciting.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a wine glass.

A - Deep ruby color almost brown, couldn't see through it. Highly carbonated. One finger of brown head that disappeared almost immediately.

S - Roasted malt, bittersweet chocolate, mild hint of coffee.

T - Similar to the nose but slightly magnified. Malt up front mild coffee in the middle and the chocolate malt at the end. Slight hop bitterness at the end once the beer has warmed up a bit.

M - This one is very carbonated(almost over carbonated) and fairly light.

O - I found myself drinking this one very quickly due to the extreme drink-ability however it isn't really impressing me a whole lot. Decent beer and for $1.99 for a bomber I wont pass it up but it didn't do much for me. Let this warm up a bit if you wanna notice any of the hops.

Pours a fizzy large bubbled 1 finger head that fades pretty quickly, no lacing, something that I expect to see on a 10% abv beer, not one that is half that, super dark brown colored beer, almost black, with faint hints of light sneaking through.

Nose has plenty of dark malts, creamy chocolate, milk chocolate, oats, caramel, black malts but not roasty or charred, lactose too I think, somewhat like a milk chocolate stout, but not much else. As it warms it becomes mostly luscious chocolate and even vanilla.

Taste starts with slightly metallic flavor, then into the dark malts, light bitter acrid black malt with little tannin, but not roasty or burnt. Again the light lactose milky flavor brings milk chocolate, as well as light biscuit for an almost oreo cookie like without the creme filling. Earthy spicy grassy hops cut in quite a bit, fairly bitter as the hops jump in and stump me (forgive the pun). Finish is drier, a little creamy still, light lingering metallic slightly acrid black malt, hint milk chocolate, and long lingering plenty of earthy spicy hops.

Mouth is med bodied, a nice creamy milky feel, decent carbonation.

Overall not bad, but not great. Nice creamy milk stout like flavors, nice chocolate, but the light metallic acric flavor doesn't come across nicely, and the hops, while a nice hop profile, don't seem to blend too well with the beer as it's more of a milk stout. If they had beefed up the overall malt bill and roasted variety malts a bit then the hops would blend nicely.

A. It has a pure black color with a brown head and some lacing.

S. An ever so slight metallic scent.

T/M. It has a chocolate malty taste, very dry. It has a mild flavor. Semi-high in alcohol. A bit dully and dry. Carbonated and medium bodied.

O. It has a very dry taste, but it is refreshing even if not overly flavorful.

Bottle to HF tulip.

A - Black with a half finger of light brown head.

S - Roasted malts, smoke, semi-sweet chocolate and a hint of molasses.

T - Roast, semi-sweet chocolate and brown sugar up front. Lighter coffee and molasses notes in the background. Fairly sweet overall but not overly so.

M - Light to medium body with a slight chew but a touch watery at times. Light carbonation.

22oz bottle poured into a snifter.

A: Pours a nearly opaque black with lighter brown hues at its edges. Tan colored head reaches only a modest inch even after a vigorous pour. It dissipates into almost nothing shortly after, but can be revived briefly with some strong swirling of the glass. Minimal lacing, just a stray patch here and there.

S: Chocolate syrup, brownie batter, brown sugar, cola, mocha, chocolate cake, and some earthiness. Very sweet on the nose.

T: Cola up front, earthiness kicks in shortly after. Short-lived flash of chocolate syrup. A touch of chocolate cake and bakers chocolate. Light balancing hop bitterness. Very faint hint of acidity. It dries a lot mid-palate, and tastes of cocoa and smoke come out, along with light char and charcoal. Finishes very dry with lingering charcoal and smoke.

M: On the light side of medium bodied. Moderate carbonation is scrubbing. A bit creamy and somewhat smooth, but it could use a bit of help.

O: A decent stout. It just doesn't quite come together completely. It needs a little something more. The dryness of it comes as a bit of a shock after the nose seemed so half-baked and chocolatey.

Poured on-tap and served in a tumbler pint, the beer is jet black, with a thick, light, fluffy head beige in color with an uneven and rocky flow. Aromas of biscuit and subtle cream and molasses. The nose is slightly restrained throughout. Flavors are smooth, but slightly watered down. Coffee bitters come through initially, but nothing to really follow them up. Molasses proflies blast by in a flash, but weak and watery. The palate does not get stimulated the way the appearance and smell lead you to believe it will. Big letdown from the tastebuds. The aftertaste is a tangy, sweet, muddled mess that shows hints of overcarbonation. The finish is sharp and light, with a roasted character that hangs on way too long. So much promise that just wilts away where it counts.
