This one's not quite ready for prime time.

Looks good enough: dark copper with cream foam that provides some nice lacing.

The mouthfeel is spot-on: bordering on full-bodied but with enough carbonation to keep it from getting too thick.

The problem here is the muscular hop punch. Not only are the hops overwhelming the rest of the beer (a la fresh Old Guardian), but the hop flavors are too much like Half Acre's other offerings. While the strong lemongrass flavors are more than welcome in Daisy Cutter and She Wolf, here they are a distraction from some of the very pleasant sweet and bready flavors that are struggling to get noticed.

I'll have to come back to this beer in a year or two and see how it's aging. I'm actually optimistic. The malt backbone seems substantial enough to develop some more sweetness over time and, once the hops calm down, this could get quite tasty. In the short term, this is just too young. If you buy or trade for this, keep it cool for two years and see what happens...

22 oz bomber into a Founders 15th glass. Cool label and idea! Pours a clear burnt red color with a fingers worth of stubborn white foam. Really sticks around and clings to the glass. Excellent retention. Smells like a faded hoppy American barleywine. Resinous pine and some light citrus, toffee and caramel, a touch of booze and some brown sugar sweetness. Taste is similar to the nose with plenty of toffee, brown sugar, and piney hops. Bitterness is low and the alcohol is noticeable but pleasant. This is tasting really damn good right now, but I can only imagine age hurting this beer. Mouth feel is full and creamy. Overall this is a really solid beer. Really hits on everything that I would want out of the style with a bit of age on it.

Pours deep hazelnut brown into a snifter glass. Moderate carbonation, half finger of head with average retention and some nice rings of lacing on the glass.

Herbal and earthy hops with a bit of citrus zest and pine resin. Fruity undertones and a solid toffee, brown sugar and stale bread. No alcohol sensed.

Deep breads and toffee a slight nuttiness that transitions smoothly to pine and resin hops with a citrus and lemon zest accompaniment. Slightly bitter on the finish but with so very little alcohol.

Full and tasty adequate carbonation. Alcohol is very well masked, generous malt.

Flavorwise this isn't going to blow you away with it's complexities the malt leaves very little to get excited about, but the hop profile is interesting crossing pine, citrus and herbs and is highlighted well. Alcohol is very well hidden, probably better fresh.

App- It's a very weird orange color with a big hazy color with a yellow highlight. Not sort of speak a head but a tiny amount of bubbles.

Smell- I can assume fresh with the falconers flight hops this was bright and citrusy. Those have faded and are really mellow and replaced by a thick malt base.

Taste- Malty to a point and then a small amount of hops come in for a second layer of flavor and give a little boost. Not the best BW I've had but was pretty tasty.

Mouth- A full medium body with a medium carbonation. Thick on the tounge and leaves a residual malty pine flavor.

Drink- A decent beer but one I fear was best fresh. Probably wouldn't want to trade for a bottle.

A: Pours a cloudy deep amberish color with good carbonation and a dirty cap.

S: Pine, caramel, brown sugar, toasted grains, lots of toasted grains

T: A nice hop bitterness with pine needles and big graininess. Caramel, toffee and some light citrus. Taste alot like Moyland Old Blarney as far as the hop bite and overall feel. Sweet but not to sticky

M: Body and carbonation are good

O: Average in taste profile but the nose and appearance were pretty nice

Poured into a snifter on 1/10/12

Deep, rustic copper hue; at times it has a nearly crimson sheen. Ample one and a half finger head, especially for the abv. The head recedes slowly to a pack of bubbles amid a thin skim. Decent lace remains even before taking a drink.

Smells like a standard-fare hoppy/malty American Barleywine. Dry piney hops with traces of citrus peel and zest (think orange and lemon), toasty caramel, dried out spiced bread, brown sugar, mild fruit overtones and hints of earthiness. No alcohol to be found.

It tastes just about the same, only with appreciable alcohol and a harsher dryness. Man this critter is dry. The hoppiness seems to have parity with the malts, though both offer flavors that are on the generic side of things. Orange pith obscured by a hefty pine bitterness. Lots of toasted bread with some caramel backing it up.

Medium-full body with appropriately weighted carbonation. A bit gritty on the latter half. Finishes dry, of course.

I've got no qualms with drinkability, but it's far too average for the price of entry. I'm happy to have tried it, but I'd rather go for Bigfoot or some such.

Shared by schwaeh. Very cool share at the last big tasting.

A - Dark caramel/oak colors going on in this beer with a short off-white head.

S - Smells herbal and earthy, more like an English Barleywine imo. very vegetal and herbal. Spice notes and some toasted malt rounding things out on the back end.

T - Very bitter up front (here's the American side of things). Dry and earthy.

M/O - Dry finish. Ultimately not all that impressive. I think the label art was the best part!
