appearance is average for a belgian strong. the body is a dark mahogany, with nearly transparent light brown edges and an off white-tan head with light brown highlights. the smell is of roasted malts and dark (though not sweet) fruits (grilled green apples come to mind). perhaps some brown sugar and caramel, though the latter may be stretching it a little. of course, belgian yeast is very apparent. overall though, its rather dull.

the taste is dry and almost salty. up front there are some hints of fruit sweetness, though this is quickly taken hold of by the sugary middle that explodes with too-much carbonation and gives way to a super-dry, roasty finish and aftertaste. nothing special here. as bland as the smell suggested.

this beer is carbonated like a wild ale, though it doesn't have half of the appeal that that style boasts, and thus it can rightly be said that it is "over-carbonated" in a major way. the airiness of the mouthfeel does nothing to compliment the beers merits (if there indeed are any). the drinkability is okay because it is drink-ABLE (i.e., not a drain pour, by any means), but i wouldn't want another.

Style/abv: strong dark ale/8.5%

Smell: caramel, orange zest, and chocolate

Taste: bitter chocolate, blueberries, raspberries, dried apricots, and a touch of caramel and cane sugar

Pairs very well with Dutch apple and berry pies; it also goes very well with baby back ribs and mashed potatoes

A beautiful dark reddish brown colour with ruby highlights. 3 inches of head consisting of large bubbles that gradually lowers. Not a lot of lacing.

There is a strong cherry and bread aroma. The smell of plastic appears as the ale warms.

The taste follows the smell. Cherry fruitness and the taste of maple wood. Lots herbs in there. Perhaps tarragon. Some yeast in the taste too.

Smooth feel but slightly watery for a Belgian strong ale. Very dry and tarty.

Overall an interesting, complex dry Belgian dark ales.

This beer poured from a bottle into a glass and had a full 3 inch head for about 5 minutes. It eventually settled to a 1/2 inch head that leaves moderate lacing against the glass.

The smell is interesting and complicated. I smell sweet, pungent fruit up front (raisins or plums) which mixes quickly with roasted, dark barley like a stout. Those two aromas are followed quickly by slightly bitter spices - like pumpkins spice and hops mixed together.

Taste is just as unique and very similar to the smell. The taste is a little more balanced and sweeter than the smell. The alcohol is well hidden and not overwhelming at all.

The mouthfeel is very soft which makes the brew easy to drink. Bubbles are present in the glass but the carbonation is kept to a minimum which makes the beer very smooth.

Overall this beer is very smooth, unique and powerful at 8.5% ABV. A MUST TRY for any beer drinker. With balance and originality like this beer has, the brewer is onto something and deserves credit and attention.

Red-brown with some considerable haze. Head is easy; less than a half-inch. Loose lacing in straggles.

Perfumey apple, grape, and plum. Some pear, some raisin. Yeasty and lightly roasted. Exceptional nose.

Not as perfumey, but still florally fruity. Lots of plum and nutty yeast and grape notes. Supple maltiness offers some light roast amidst the halfway sweetness. Notes of apple and tanginess. Not full-on. Has a lot of yeasty esters. Almost has a lightly tart berry finish.

Soft and delicate mouthfeel. Feels milky. Carbonation feels low. Just interesting enough.

Love this beer. I need to drink this more often.
