Bottle. Thanks to Cesar for sharing this bad boy. Joan Jett black pour with a chocolate head. Sweet fruity aromas. The rum is very deceptive ( I could only pick it up in the nose) and adds more booze/whiskey notes. This treatment had less of the traditional Hunahpu’s flavors than the others. It is still a world class stout, but side by side with the other treatments, it is my least favorite. That being said a couple of the other guys thought this was the best. ...

Bottle shared by pokgye. Thanks, Jason. Typical Hunahpu's appearance: inky, oily black with a small but lingering dark brown crust. Big vanilla and cinnamon aroma, with chocolate and molasses coming from the huge malt foundation. Barrel is present but feels more integrated than the whiskey versions. It lends a brown sugar sweetness that makes this version of Hunahpu's feel even more rich than usual. Huge on the palate, heavy on dark chocolate, molasses, vanilla and cinnamon. The peppers have largely dropped off. The rum barrel lends a sugary sweetness with little in the way of oak. Chocolatey rich finish, very little bitterness or alcohol presence.

Big thanks to Torgo for bringing this last night!

A- Pours a midnight black with a dark mocha head that leaves a few webs of lacing behind.

S- Rum soaked dark fruit, spice cake, dark chocolate, burnt caramel, oak, roasted malt and a hint of chilies.

T- Lots going on with sweet rum upfront followed by cinnamon, black cherry, fig, dark chocolate, molasses, burnt caramel, cocoa powder, chilies , oak and a hint of char.

M- Low carbonation with a smooth body that Finishes a tad of hot. The barrel aging seems to have thin this beer out a bit.

O- Really surprised how much chili presence this had, despite being over a year old as well as being in a barrel. The usage of the rum barrel was a nice addition as it did not overpower the base beer, but I'm not sure if I preferred this version over the regular Huna. Still a really tasty beer and something that I was very happy to try.

2011 Vintage. Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass.

A- Pours a black as black as a thousand midnights with a 1/4 inch dark brown head that retains minimally before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a tiny island of thin surface foam. Scattered, drippy lacing.

S- Sweet-smelling and booze-laden aroma with notes of dark chocolate, cookie dough and oak. Also some faint coffee and acetone.

T- Where to begin? Huge thrash of dark roast plus some smoke and chocolate. The rum is definitely there to lend a heavy alcohol presence but stays smoothed out somehow and is definitely not as hot as the aroma leads one to believe. Small note of soy sauce. Smokey honey barbecue flavor in the aftertaste.

M- Elegantly creamy with a high viscosity and certainly some heat that lingers on the tongue and throat. Low carbonation assists in this motor oil-esque feel.

O- So glad I waited a year for this to fully mature. Some say that beers already barrel-aged don't need to be aged in the bottle but I disagree. I had a Bourbon barrel Hunah that was purchased at the same release as this one and it wasn't as complex. If I were rich, I'd use this for making a rub to put on ribs.

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for opening this with me, VaTechHopHead!

(Aged for 1 year)

Black on black with a small espresso brown head. Spots of lacing left down the glass. Thick and rich looking. Nobody makes better looking imperial stouts than Cigar City.

The rum/barrel combo is front and center, perhaps more so than of all the variants. There's a woody sweetness that's dominant and overpowering, along with the base beer almost hidden in the background: roast, chocolate, and mild char. The chile elements from the base beer is all but gone, but I suppose that can be expected.

Very sweet and oak-forward flavor, along with mild roast, chocolate, and char. As with the aroma, the barrel and the spirit is very much the star of the show. Unfortunately, I don't like rum and/or rum barrel-aged beers nearly as much as I do bourbon/scotch/whiskey. Unbalanced and boozy, at least compared to the other variants.

Full bodied with low carbonation. Creamy, silky mouthfeel.

The weakest of the Hunahpu variants.

Red waxed bottle courtesy of Mr. Pendejo himself, the most serious ticker I know.

Pour somehow looks less viscous than the other Huna variants I've had. A mild tan ring forms at the surface. Boozy rum barrels and a deep roast dominate the aroma. Can barely smell the chiles in the background.

Rum barrels are front and center. Layers of oak and booze mask the vanilla/chocolate aftertaste that I love about the base beer. Instead, the rum-induced booze lingers after swallowing. Somehow tastes past its prime, even though regular '11 Hunahpu is still drinking quite well right now.

Quite inferior to both regular Hunahpu & the Apple Brandy BA variant.

750 ml waxed bottle served in a Deschutes snifter. Huge thanks to Andrew (nasty31) for the share. I prefer fresh Huna to aged Huna, but that being said I thought the Bourbon barrel aged version was stupendous so I had high hopes for this one as well.

A: Pours a dark black with a viscous body. A dark mocha head forms on the pour and recedes to a thick, bubbly ring. Sticky sheets of lace are left behind.

S: Fruity rum booziness up front with dark and sweet milk chocolate flavors. Slight figs and roasted malts as well.

T: Oaky body with roasted malts. The rum is barely noticeable, just some faint hints of it. Nice light chocolate presence as well.

M: Meidum carbonation with smooth and creamy medium to heavy body. The finish is malty and sweet.

O: While this was good I was struggling to pick out some of the bolder barrel notes in the taste. It seems the base has swallowed up most the discernable Rum barrel flavorings. I would gladly take a fresh Huna or the Bourbon Barrel version of this any day.
