Notes:
This is a heavily hopped high gravity porter featuring the hopping levels of an India Pale Ale with the rich and roasty malt profile of a robust porter. Heavy hop rates, while uncommon in today's porters were not unknown historically and recipes from the British porter producers of the 1800's evidence hopping rates far in excess of what is common for the style today.

A - pours a dark brown, almost black and almost opaque. A nice 2-finger tan head sits atop the beer, and hangs around until the end of the session.
S - coffee and hops. This beer smells wonderful! I also smell a bit of molasses and brown sugar.
T - Yummy! A nice balance of alcohol, coffee, malts, and hops. The high ABV is very nicely hidden. This could be one of the best strong porter's I've had...hands down!
D - well, it's almost perfect for the style. I don't give many 5s, but this one is close! Very drinkable....
You definitely want to give this beer a try if you are into the dark, strong beers. You won't be let down!

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.
In my tulip, José Martí has a rich, deep chocolate appearance. Thick and viscous, it is visibly apparent that this is a bold porter. A robust tan mocha head lasts for the duration of the sip, leaving layers of lace down the glass.
The aroma has two separate parts. A blend of full of dark chocolate, roasted malt, and creamy coffee comes through nicely, and pine, orange citrus, and spicy hops provide a strong and interesting counter.
From the first sip I can tell this is a winner. The hops actually shine through up front, at least partially due to their outsized strength. Orange, tangerine, and a bit of grapefruit provide juicy citrus notes, with some spicy pine adding support. The main component of the flavor, however, is the dark chocolate and roasted malt component. Bits of coffee and cream, smoke, and tobacco work in as well, but ultimately the dark chocolate flavor really carries the beer. The finish does have a nice, lingering bitterness, which seems to come from the hops and from the coffee and roast grain flavors.
The body is definitely on the full side for the style, but it never drags with a hop presence that really cuts through the flavor and keeps it fresh. It has a smooth, easy going carbonation that is more creamy than anything.
Other hoppy porters have not really impressed me that much, but this is top notch. I would definitely drink this again.

A: Pours a nice deep mahogany, a bit of reddish at the lit edge; rich tan head leaves moderate lace.
S: Coffee and rich roasted malt with slight leather and tobacco.
T: Dark bread well toasted with smooth medium roast coffee, like a coarse breakfast. Hops punch through the middle and finish with a noticeable yet subtle hint of tobacco. The finish leads into an aftertaste return of the coffee and hop bitterness.
M: Mouth feel is right on for the style and matches the other attributes at medium to medium full with fine carbonation.
O: This beer was a real treat for me, being a gift from my TB area sis whiIe on vacation at the beach. In my estimation it's a fairly special beer that demands some quiet contemplation, for when you want something better than good. Jose Marti American Porter gets high marks for depth, subtlety, complexity and balance.
