Received via trade with Seblitje- thanks a ton...been wanting to try this one for a while!!

a: pours a menacing thick black with a orangeish/reddish/brown head. I have never seen this color on a head- I assume it has to do with the peppers. A thin layer of the head retains itself throughout the glass and leaves dark bubbles on the glass as it goes down. As I observe the head, I notice cool designs of swirls from the contrasting shades of color

S:the front is a huge malty profile with molasses, cocoa, and coffee notes which is followed by a noticeable hint of peppers, the aroma is complex and takes on more character as it heats up

T: vanilla and molasses on the fronts followed by a huge chocolate profile as the peppers make an appearance towards the back of the palate. The finish is long and sweet and leaves a heat from the peppers. There isn't one flavor that dominates the palate, but so many flavors that harmonize quite well with each other.

MF: wickedly thick and viscous, a meal in a glass, very creamy on the palate

D: this is a luxuriously rich beverage with a high level of complexity. It is certainly worthy of hype as this beer is ssublime

Cigar City Never Ceases to Impress!

A: Motor Oil Black, Sticks to the Glass, Tar Pit with a tan frothy head that hunkers down low around the edge of the glass.

S: Plumb, Raison, Malty, Roasty, Chocolaty, Caramel, Alcohol, Subtle Molasses hints/

T: Just tasting this beer lets me know that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Possibly The Holy Grail of Stouts? This beer should be in a genre of it's own, with it's Intense Dark Chocolate & Roasted Grains, Almost a woody earthy background. Slight alcohol burn. or is it? Suddenly you will feel a burn in the back of your throught that soon spreads to the rest of your mouth. This beer is alive and won't go down with out a fight.

MF: Creamy, moderate Carbonation. Hot Pepper tingle.

D: (More, give me More. Now!) obviously not for the faint of heart or die hard BMC drinkers whom would never appreciate the artwork within the glass.

Pours a thick, oily black deep shades of espresso. Silky mocha head has excellent lace and retention. Possibly the best looking beers I have ever seen.

Nose has chocolate, roasty malts, molasses, floral hops, booze, vanilla, spicy chili peppers, fresh roasted coffee and dark pitted fruits.

Taste has rich cocoa, vanilla, espresso, dark roasty malts, molasses, chili pepper, ripe plums, figs, dates and just a hint of cinnamon.

Thick, creamy body is perfectly carbonated. Present, but not at all in the way. Long, decadent finish.

Simply fantastic. Really impressive stuff.

A: Dark as the night itself. Exceptional lacing.

S: Vanilla, chocolate, and coffee notes.

T: Rich in flavor. Creamy, malty, and THICK

M: It's like butta!

D: A bit heavier beer than I normally pursue, I appreciate it for what it is, but it's definitely best reserved for special occasions.

A: The bottle is saturated with adjectives, so it must be good, right? Hunahpu's is extremely thick and equally dark. A single drop is enough to completely hide a white surface. Carbonation is nearly non-existant, and a head is hard to coax out of this thick liquid. Swirling the glass results in a viscous black film that never really settles, but simply clings there, like paint on a wall.

S: Bouquet is well presented. Chocolate and molasses dominate, with little else perceptable through their strength.

T: Flavor begins with a mountain of chocolate supported by smooth vanilla and finished with a delightful touch of chile heat. It is quite sweet, but not cloying. The chile adds a great counter to the aggressively sweet nature of this brew.

M: Thick, creamy, sticky. This reminds me of a milk shake.

D: I had to try this after seeing it rise so quickly to the #9 spot. I can definitely say that it deserves the attention, as it is both innovative and delightful. Many thanks to Jconhead1 for splitting this one with me.

4oz pour into a Perfect Pint glass...very happy to share this with everyone at a recent tasting, but after I had some, damn...wish I had more!

The body is dark black to the point of almost mirror like. A thick single finger of (what looked like) melted chocolate formed on top of the body. The head lasted and clung all over the glass.

The nose is amazing...lots of rich chocolate, deep coffee notes, roasted malts and a hint of spice. Some lighter aromas in the background include vanilla and malted cream.

Wow...the flavor sticks right with the nose...a hefty blast of creamy cocoa hits the palate first. This slides away for the roasted malts and freshly ground coffee flavors. The finish finds the spicy/pepper notes detected in the nose. Very complex and well balanced.

The mouth feel is rich and full, creamy as all hell with mild carbonation.

From the small serving, I could not detect any of the ABV, making this extremely drinkable. The highlight of the night (against some monster competition). A wonderful beer that is worth any effort to acquire!

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a mini snifter. Head is tudor brown in color with a black body. Lacing is oily and resinous. Aroma is of coffee, roasted malts, chocolate malt, maybe some spiciness and some alcohol aroma. Taste is dominated by coffee, roasted malts and chocolate. Not picking up too much vanilla or chili, I assume those flavors are in the background, balancing everything out. Mouth is coated with flavor, maybe a touch chalky. Incredibly smooth and easy to drink for 11.5%, silly. Pretty amazing in the Florida summer, can't wait to have one in the winter.

750ml bottle into a snifter. Thanks to Alieniloquium for the trade!

Hunahpu's pours with a pithy blackness that only the darkest midnights are known to provide. Edgar Allen Poe stuff, here. One of the most attractive billows of foam builds with each swirl of the glass--creamy and thick, brick red in color. The aroma wafts intricate notes of cinnamon, sweet dark chocolate, vanilla beans, and roasted Earth. Perhaps unfairly so, the smell is weaker in comparison to the flavor of Hunahpu's (and other upper echelon Imperial Stouts), but still quite good.

And speaking of flavor, sweet Mother-of-God this stuff is good! Absolutely bursting at the seams with rich chocolate, molasses, and vanilla sweetness up front, and the cinnamon and chili peppers take over mid-palate to dry out the finish with an earthy, organic gingerbread note that draws me in sip after glorious sip. Mouthfeel is rich and velvety with a picture perfect carbonation level. Honestly, this beer has little room for improvement. I had my doubts about Cigar City after being let down by a few of their more hyped offerings, but 2011 Hunahpu's is the real deal. A "must-try" in every sense of the word.

Review #4

Received this bottle from Chairmissing and I can't thank him enough!

A: The darkest, thickest beer I've seen to date. Decent carbonation.

S: Coffee, chocolate and vanilla.

T: Let me start by saying I came into this beer very skeptical. I never believe the hype behind beers but this left me speechless. I let the bottle sit for about 20 minutes after taking out of the fridge, poured into a snifter. The first taste was strong chocolate and alcohol with a interesting aftertaste. As it warmed the cinnamon and chili became quite apparent. The strong chocolate hits first then some malt and to finish it off the chili hits the back of the tongue simply amzing and this is now the most complex beer I've ever had.

O: Can't describe how much I love this beer. There is no way I will miss the release next year. I wouldn't trade away the cellar to try it but if you have a friend near the brewery or someone offering you a bottle for a decent trade definitely do it.

Update from CC. The 2011 version is even better. More chocolate and vanilla with less pronounced peppers. Still get the heat, but mostly on the backend. Superb..
The description on the bottle says it all. The aroma was spicy chilies. The taste was like nothing I have had before. A great stout with undercurrents of roasted malt, chocolate, and cocoa that are dominated by vanilla and peppers. Wowzers...

Poured from a 750ml bottle into a CCB snifter. 2011 release.

This brew pours an absolutely oppressive black color capped with a tiny, brown head. Looks good, but having had the 2011 Zhukov over the past few nights, the appearance here doesn't quite stack up. The aroma has full espresso and malt roastiness, dark chocolate, vanilla, along with a nice chili pepper kick. Very great smelling. The taste is very nice, it starts out with an absolutely rock-solid RIS base that's as good as any you'd ever want. Tons of roastiness, along with plenty of vanilla and dark chocolate. The things that really put Hunahpu's a step above the others is the chili and cinnamon aspects. The chilis here add a whole new dimension to the RIS, providing a bit of a kick on the way down the throat. As it warms, the chilis become all the more prevalent. All around superb.

The mouthfeel is amazing. It goes down silky-smooth, and the little hint of chili pepper burn on the back of the throat just really keeps things interesting. It's a bit undercarbed though, a little more liveliness would do it well. The drinkability is superb, this drinks way easier than the ABV would dictate. Overall, this is easily one of the best beers I've ever had, and the best imperial stout, right ahead of it's little brother Zhukov. Now, I can't say I've had many "whales", but if they're all this delicious I can see why people go nuts over them!

The last three times I have had this beer, I have been blown away. If I could have but one stout in my cellar, this is the one.

The beer appears black as night. The void. Quite possibly the darkest beer I have ever seen. The head is beige and thick, coating the glass in lacing.

The aroma brings a potent dose of roasted malt, alcohol, chiles, cocoa, vanilla. Wow, this beer smells fantastic.

Unbelievably well-balanced and teeming with flavor. Simply amazing. The chiles have a big presence in the beer, but don't put out an overabundance of heat or spice. Masterfully done there. Cinnamon, vanilla, and oak meld beautifully with a full-bodied, roasty stout.

Perfect carbonation level. Every sip leaves a thick coating of rich stout on the palate. The feel is just perfect.

Overall, one of the best beers, and certainly among the finest imperial stouts I have ever had. My highest recommendation.

Served on draft at Kickbacks into a 8oz Unibroue snifter/sampler glass. 6oz pour.

Blacker than your ex's heart is this beer. No light anywhere near this beast is getting through. Dark mocha head, similar to a chocolate mousse, only darker. Lacing is spotty. A finger of head on the pour. Even when just moving the beer in the glass, the sticky nature of this beer takes over, leaving its mark throughout. Viscous just isn't enough to describe this beer. At rest, this is a nice rim of mocha head sitting at the cusp where the beer meets the glass. Lovely.

Nose is dominated mostly by the chocolate base that is Zhukov. Having had this fresh, it has lost most of its profound nose. Notes of sweetness from the vanilla, and a mild chili presense. Much more of a "chocolate" beer nose than anythign else. Alcohol noted, though has to be sought after. It has lost much, so I am rated it higher knowing what it once was. Fresh is better in this regard.

The taste experience is something found in no other beer I've had. The chocolate base of Zhukov is found through out, accententuated by the cocoa nibs. Off of this base comes the flavors in order. Vanilla, then cinnamon and then a fine note of the chilis. All are well done, none dominated and still an imperial stout. So much more than a chocolate beer at this point. So, damn, amazing. It may lose a bit since it was kegged in terms of fresh flavors, but it has gained a balanced quality.

So bloody viscous. Sticky in the mouth. It requires plenty of time to enjoy. It is impossible to merely drink this one, as it something to be savored. Requires a good hour just to drink.

SO intense, so powerful, so unapologetic, and so brasen in the approach, yet well done. Hard to bring another "flavored" stout that has this much intensity yet it is so enjoyable to drink. Very, very, very well done.

Picked up a 2011 bottle of this on a recent trip to Florida, and finally popped it open. Wow! Poured at 55 deg. a deep black out of the bottle with a mocha colored head, about an inch thick. I also saw some red in it as well. Aroma's of cinnamon and spice pervade the aroma, although you can get bitter dark chocolate and dried prunes, and some vanilla. This beer coats the tongue, with a very creamy texture. Like in the aroma, lots of cinnamon and lots and lots of chocolate. As the beer finishes, you'll get some spice and heat from the chillies. The creaminess lingers long after you've swallowed, too.

All and all, an excellent beer that any big stout lover should try and find.

Had this on tap at Hunahpu day at Cigar City.

Thick, viscous, dense black beer with reddish brown head. Smell is full of coffee, chocolate, and vanilla. The taste is bittersweet with loads of chocolate and espresso, followed by a pleasant chili pepper kick. As Hunahpu warms up it tastes sweeter and the vanilla flavors come through better. The chili spice feels palate cleansing and sets up the next sip. Mouthfeel is thick and viscous with low carbonation.

Astounding Impy Stout.

Served in 10oz Hunahpus Day snifter

A-pours like motor oil in the glass. Jet black with thick dark brown head.

S-huge vanilla and chocalate notes. Nice under lacing of spice.

T-a beautiful blend of chocalate and vanilla. Wonderful spice flavor that gives it a great bitter finish. Just perfect.

M-thickness at a perfect level. Just absolutely coats your mouth with creamy sweetness.

O- easily one of the best beers I have ever had. A must have.

This thing pours 2am black into the glass with a nice thick "glug, glug". Nice sticky lacing from the head. Good legs on the glass. Definitely one of the best looking imperial stouts out there.

Smell on this is great. Nice dark roast, hints of the vanilla and cinnamon present. Morning blend coffee.

Taste is off the charts for me. Perfect blend of traditional RIS flavors (coffee, bakers chocolate), with great add-ons. The vanilla is a nice sweet note, with the cinnamon present but not overpowering. I really love how the chiles come in on the back end and create this pleasant warming note throughout. Probably the most balanced use of chiles in beer that I've come across.

Mouthfeel is perfect for a big beer like this. Smooth, creamy, goes down easy without being cloying.

After having this a third time on Thanksgiving night I can say this has become my favorite beers in the "one day a year" special release category. I think I'm going to have to make the effort to get down there next year for release day.

Growler shared by HOPSHUNTER - thanks!

Pours black with a one-finger dark brown head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells amazing. Vanilla and smooth chocolate notes meet up with deep and dark malt flavors with just a hint of underlying heat. Tying everything together are hints of cinnamon. What really seals the deal for me in the aroma department is not what is included but in what levels it's included. Everything present plays off of each other perfectly.

Tastes great. Roasted malt flavors and robust dark chocolate kick things off and are joined shortly by mild hints of vanilla. The vanilla serves to sweeten things up a bit until near the end of the sip when an earthy heat that builds on itself enters into things and carries through to a mildly bitter ending. The cinnamon doesn't make nearly as much impact as it does on the nose.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a very smooth thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is great. I finished my glass absurdly quickly and could easily have five more trying to dissect everything going on in this beer.

Overall this is one of the most well done and interesting beers I can remember having. I look forward to trying this again someday and hoping that it's as good as I remember it being. Do yourself a favor and make it a point to try this beer.

Enjoyed in a snifter at CCB taproom.

A: Pours motor oil black with a nice tan head. Good retention.

S: Slightly sweet and lots of chocolate. The cinnamon, vanilla and chiles are subtle but you can pick them up. Wonderful.

T: Serious chocolate up front followed by the cinnamon and vanilla. I realized that the warmth I was getting was from the chiles and not necessarily the alcohol. Wow, I'm not sure if I have experienced so much going on in a beer. Given all the flavors in this beer it is extremely well balanced. One of the better i've had for this style.

M: Thick, very smooth and chewy. Low carbonation.

D: Very drinkable given the ABV. Could have a couple but i'm sure it sneaks up on you. Glad I picked up a few 750's to age and enjoy later.

Thanks CCB for another fine beer!

750 bottle paired with mole rubbed duck over grilled polenta and a spicy chimi churi sauce.

A- poured about as dark as it gets, black as a moon less night with a bit of espresso colored creamy head. Super thick and oily so viscous it coats the glass.

S- amazingly complex. First I'm hit with dark roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Then smooth deep fire roasted chilies and chared wood. The chilies show up as a spicy but earthy burn. Layers of sweet dark berries and mexican cinnamon. Bourbon vanilla mixes its way in the sweetness with some brown sugar and molasses.

T- dios mio. This it the truth. Roasted everything! The coffee and chilies bust it up first and roll into the chocolate with such beauty. 86 percent dark chocolate with big tropical fruit and over ripe dark berries. The vanilla sweetens things up and brings a balance to things. Smokey wood and a slight nutty char deepen the flavor and bring it all back around.

M- chewy and thick. Light carbonation that lends its way to a nice linger and long finish, and that's super fine with me.

D- great I'd say. This is a huge brew in flavor depth and alcohol but this never get boozy at all. It just keeps me coming back for another sip.

750 mL bottle of 2011 batch shared with two others

A - Pours pitch black with half a finger of the darkest head EVER. Dark dark dark brown head with average retention and nice lacing. Never seen anything quite like it.

S - Vanilla, chocolate, considerable coffee bitterness. Even a little fig. The chile comes into play, as does the cinnamon. No booze to speak of, which is incredibly impressive.

T - I'm not worthy! This is insane. Vanilla and chocolate in droves. The chiles add this amazing je ne sais quoi that really rounds out and perfects the beer. Cinnamon is there to bring it all together and round things out. A touch of chile heat at the end to cap it off. Chocolate dominates the finish. I can hardly believe how good it is. The first time I've given a 5 in taste, and deservedly so.

M - Smooth, creamy, thick, and just right. A touch of heat at the end, from the chiles, which really enhances everything.

O - This is it. I never expected it to be this good, but this beer is just about perfect. A revelation, in many respects. Nothing is really close. Perfect use of the chile and the vanilla. Truly, this beer is unmatched.

Thanks to BastionShaw for this beast of a bottle!

Pours a coffee brown, with the darkest head that anyone in the tasting circle had ever seen. About 1/2 a finger worth of head on my pour. Smell! I wish I could smell this beer forever. Each whiff brings a different smell be it Ovaltine, Blackened peppers, tobacco, dark dark chocolate. The smell alone is phenomenal. Onto the taste, with the first sip you get a burst of deep roasted chocolate and as you let that that linger you get a grilled pepper flavor that dances in your mouth. Every sip is different from the next. The mouthfeel is nice but not in your face. The chilies play a good role in letting the tingling sensation coat your mouth without burning your tongue. Also this beer leaves your mouth feeling dry like a tannic wine, but it works! Overall I am ecstatic I got to try this beer and would love to snag another bottle!

2011 vintage. I took the bottle out of the fridge, and allowed it to warm for about 30 minutes before I poured my first sample into my tulip glass.

A: I cannot recall another beer pouring any darker than this beast. It looked exactly like used motor oil coming out of the bottle, absolutely no chance of any light making it's way through whatsoever. A normal pour yielded about a 1/2 inch very dark brown head, again one of the darkest I have ever seen. Looks very appetizing.

S: Wow, where do I even begin? Chocolate, roasted malts, cocoa, cinnamon, and a hint of chiles, somewhat subdued.

T: The first sip absolutely blew me away. I honestly didn't move for about a minute, savoring and trying to comprehend all of the flavors I was experiencing. By this time, it had warmed up to the perfect temperature, and all of the flavors seemed to complement one another perfectly. Strong cocoa/chocolate flavor, with cinnamon also pronounced. The vanilla and chiles were also noticeable, but not overpowering, playing a perfect supporting role. It is so completely rich, that drinking a couple ounces took quite a while, but I enjoyed every second of it.

M: The mouthfeel on this sucker was amazing, one of the best I've ever had. Very thick, but at the same time silky smooth, almost velvety.

O: This beer is probably the best non-barrel aged imperial stout I've ever had. It's so complex that it seems no amount of description will do it justice. It's balanced perfectly, all of the different flavors seem to blend together better than I ever could have imagined.

This was my first Cigar City brew. I huge bravo to everyone involved in the creation of this beauty!

A- Jet black with a dark dark tan head. Head recedes slowly but surely into a ring. Practically stains the glass.

S- Oh wow! Smells incredible! You can smell everything in its place, the chiles, the coco, the vanilla, and of course the cinnamon gives a great complexity.

T- This beer is awesome! So much complexity, but everything is very balanced. You get everything and it all has its place and none of it is overbaring at all. Truly awesome flavor.

M- For something so big and bold it goes down so easy its scary.

O- Easily one of my all time favorites, blew me away.

This could be one of the best beers I have had the pleasure of drinking. Really nice, really deep, really, really good. Thanks to Donn for picking this up for our outstanding tasting. There is some much depth and flavor in this beer, it is a great example of my favorite style of beer. The chiles, the cinnamon, the tastes and flavored are great. Pours a beautiful black with a nice brown dark head....overall..pure awesome!
