750ml bottle poured into a tulip. I opened this on Canada Day (the motherland) as I figured it would be suiting for the occasion but just entering notes now.

A - Pours a darkish brown to swampy black. Nice fluffy wet sand brown head that does leave some good lacing.

S - A distinct smokiness. Oak, sweet syrup, caramel, vanilla.

T - This beer is deep in flavour. Lots of oak intermixed with the sweet maple syrup and the smoky wood. Definitely pick up some graininess of the rye on the back end and a hint of honey. Very good.

M - Easy to drink, medium, slightly tacky.

O - A very tasty beer, really liked this one. Glad I have more for next Canada Day!

had this one for a while, enjoyed from new reserve society taster glass.

a - brew poured a deep purple with some crimson highlights and a thin bubbly head that was gone quick.

s - decent amount of smoke on top of the expected dark fruit raisin combo. the smoke is a bit over done and steals the show, but it leaves me wishing it was dialed back a little bit.

t - starts with boozy dark fruit raisins and then finishes with a blast of smoked out malts and some peatiness. the maple is present but really comes across as peaty smoke.

m - boozy. medium bodied, not as chewy as i would expect.

o - overall, not my favorite from either brewery. The wood and booze and smokiness is just not a match with each other. this one might be a bit of a chore to tackle.

750 ml shared by Gonzoillini. Thanks Tony! Served in a Deschutes snifter.

A: Pours a dark brownish color with some lighter edges. A thin khaki colored head forms on the pour and recedes quickly to a thin ring. Some minor splotches of lace.

S: Light and smokey. Wood char with some dark fruit and a little pale malt.

T: Same as the nose. Pale malts, smokey and some char. Light oxidation with some paper. Booze is well hidden by the smoke.

M: Medium light bodied with a medium carbonation level. Slightly smokey finish.

O: Decent enough with some well hidden booze. I enjoy smoked beers, but this one was a little one note. Booze was hidden nicely though.

Review from notes during a tasting in July 2011.

Acer Quercus pours a clear dark ruby color with a creamy off white head. A fair amount of lacing clings to the glass.

The aroma is smokey and malty with pine notes.

Each sip of this full bodied beer is creamy with soft carbonation. The flavor has caramel malt, smoke, pine, dark fruit and licorice. The malty & dark fruit flavors linger when the beer is gone. It's a full flavored beer that's smokey and very tasty.

A: Pours dark brown with thin tan head which fades to the rim leaving links of lace.

N: Woody, earthy, malty, with some smoke.

T: Maple wood and some mild smoke and roast along with caramel.

M: Medium body and carbonation. Slight smoke on the finish.

O: Interesting after spme age which brings more depth on the wood and less maple than when fresh.

Split amongst friends, poured to Ommegang Three Philosphers stemmed ware.

Pours with a fingers width of khaki colored head to a very dark brown with an opaque edged body. The smell is prominent: smoked malts, toffee and vanilla. The taste seemed to subside a bit, the maple isn't really there but the smoked malt comes through nice and mild, caramel, toffee, vanilla, some oak tannins. Mouth feel is decent, good carbonation level to this overall.

Big thanks to Ryan for this one!
