This BA stout out of Vermont was served in a wine glass. Appearance is black with a small brown head. Its` nose has oak, bourbon, dark chocolate, very inviting smell. The taste is vanilla, chocolate, more of the bourbon and oak. A tasty beer, to be savored. Mouthfeel is medium, velvet like texture. All things considered, this is a fine imperial stout.

A-Pours deep black with a thin, brownish head.
S-The nose is great. Delectably sweet chocolate notes with rich java, barrel character and noticeable maple highlights. Sweet with complexity but balanced by roast.
T-This tastes excellent. The maple flavor is clear, well integrated and set to the perfect intensity. Barrel notes are another complement. Sweet chocolate fudge, oaky booze and rich roast.
M-Creamy and mildly viscous. Heat on the back end. Sticky and pleasant.
O/D-Yeah, Lawson's can make more than just hoppy beers. This was one of the better Stouts I have had in a while. Loads of delicious complexity.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter. I was lucky enough to try this along with the other three versions, and this one was my favorite.
The beer pours a dark brown color, almost black with a nice layer of off white head. The smell is full of sweet alcohol with some dark fruit and a mild maple syrup note. The flavor is quite smooth. I'm getting the bourbon with a mild maple note. There is some roast, but it mainly shows up in the finish. I'm also getting some bourbon and maple syrup in the finish. There was a pleasant oaky note throughout the sip.

A - Dark chocolate colored beer with a small one finger head that settled down to the layer of foam
S - Maple, vanilla and charred oak from the roasted malts. Not much bourbon from the barrel. Little sweetness overall
T - Chocolates, vanilla, light maple syrup, and oak to it. However, there is a strong charred malt flavor that takes over from the sweetness. The char is too overpowering for me and makes the beer have a bitterness that lingers on in the finish
MF - Medium body with chocolate malt. The roasted malt makes it too burnt and astringent for the flavor
O - This beer could have been great but the roasted and charred malts just take over. The maple and vanilla are there but overpowered by the char and bitterness

375ml grey wax bottle from the 2012 bottling. Poured into Lawson's snifter.
A- Pours an opaque jet black with a thin mocha brown head that has nice retention and leaves some spotty lacing. Very similar to the maple BA Fayston with maybe a tiny bit more head.
S- Lightly sweet bourbon and maple syrup with some underlying notes of chocolate, malts, oak, and a tiny bit of espresso. Definitely not as aromatic as the maple version but very nice non-the-less with the perfect amount of bourbon in my opinion so that it isn't too boozey smelling but adds a nice sweetness.
T- Sweet bourbon, light maple syrup, roasted malts, a bit of espresso with cream, some oak on the finish. Extremely well balanced with just the right amount of bourbon coming out to add a nice sweetness and complexity while still retaining some of the base beer flavors.
M- Medium bodied (maybe slightly on the thin side for a BA beer, but in my opinion doesn't take anything away from the beer), nice carbonation, extremely smooth, lightly creamy, very easy drinking.
O- This wasn't quite as good as the Maple Fayston, I felt like the maple came out a little bit more and the aroma was definitely a lot more pronounced. Apart from that though this beer was extremely well done. I liked this better then the base beer and I thought everything from the base beer was still retained in this beer while adding a nice sweetness from the bourbon and smoothness from the aging. In my opinion this is one of the better done barrel-aged beers out there and I'm already craving more. I highly recommend checking this out.

Bottle from jbeatty. Thanks again man!
From a 75cl bottle into a snifter
Vintage: 2011
Rare batch 185
Bottle 269 of 350
Drank this one right after the base beer.
APPEARANCE: Basically the same pour and head as the base. Pours out dark black and yields a one finger, medium looking, light mocha colored head with good retention. Black body and lower levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a splotchy wisp and ring. A ring remains the whole way but leaves no real lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Roasted and chocolate notes with sweet cream, vanilla, caramel and very light bourbon notes. Maple syrup isn't really a factor here, tbue the bourbon barrel and base beer are quite pleasant. Not overly bold, but interesting.
TASTE: Roasted beginning with caramel sweetness and oak bourbon notes. Lots of bourbon barrel after the swallow, with vanilla, milk chocolate, and some tart oak flavors. Cocoa powder and roasted notes accompany some decent bourbon and vanilla flavors in the bold and lingering finish. Flavorful, and more impressive than the nose.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A little light on the palate perhaps, but very creamy smooth for sure. Even creamier than the base beer, which was impressive itself. Goes down silky smooth and finishes slightly dry. A little light, but the silky creaminess is very impressive.
OVERALL: This is a wonderfully balanced barrel aged stout, though it isn't quite impressive enough to really stand out from the crowd. I'm not sure if the extended aging on this bottle is the culprit, but the maple syrup isn't really a factor here, and the nose is a little mute to be memorable. That said, it was very interesting and increadibly easy to drink. The barrel aging worked well and the creamy feel was a real treat. An enjoyable beer that is something I could drink on a regular basis. Well done Lawson, and cheers again jbeatty.

Thanks to DonFrap. Bottled Fall 2012.
A coffee with cream colored head forms atop which slowly dissipates into nothing. A little lacing is left on the glass. The color is black.
The nose is full of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, wood and alcohol.
The flavor begins with some muted chocolate, maple syrup and a touch of vanilla which is covered with tanic wood. The flavor finishes with roasted grains.
The feel is medium to heavy.
Overall, I expected more bourbon and vanilla notes, especially considering that the stout was aged "for over a year." However, this brew is remarkably balanced. It's amazing that I can still taste the base stout. I can see this brew disappointing those that are fans of BCBS or similar bourbon forward barrel aged stouts. I recommend this to those that have an appreciation for balanced brews.

Big thanks to Kegatron for sharing these Fayston brews with me. 750ml bottle numbered 69 of 350. Sampled immediately after the base brew, this pours black in color with a dark tan head. A thin penline of lace collects around the rim and spots of lace stick to the glass. A swirl revives a finger of froth back to the surface.
The nose is immediately differentiated from the base with a pleasant tangy inclusion of bourbon. Some soft notes of caramel and vanilla creep in before suggeations of raw oakiness. The alcohol is noted but that tangy whiskey aspect provides a nice change of pace. A mild spicy character exists across the back almost reminescent of burnt incense.
The flavors are dry, bitter and roasty with a fairly solid presence of somethin similar to strong, earthy coffee. A mild tangy bourbon barrel inclusion tempers the alcohol character that tries to impart a solvent feel to this. The aftertaste is nice and dry with an aggressive roasted earthiness. Fans of the RIS style will bask in how glorious this brew is on its own but the bourbon brings a nice complexity to the table.
This is a medium to lighter bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. Fayston in its own right its a bold brew with lots of flavor and complexity. Upon first sip, you know it would lend itself nicely to some barrel treatments. This one did not disappoint and I was happy to see much of the base brews character still intact with the barrel treatment bein a stubtle addition. If you like Fayston, this is even better. Thank you for sharing Heath!

750ml corked & caged bottle into a couple of glasses. Rare batch 185 Bottle # 69/350. Black with a milk chocolate colored head. This maintains rich edges with robust lacing. Smells of maple, chocolate and dark roasty malts. Just the right amount of bourbon twang resides on the edges of the nose. The taste has an immediate bold sweetness up front of maple, chocolate and brown sugar. This is tempered quickly however by deep burnt roast and char from the barrel. Dry with a burnt woody feel on the finish. Mouthfeel is firm and chewy with some light sharpness to the carbonation in spots. Like the base, the alcohol is very smooth in this despite the barrel presence. This was probably my favorite over the Maple Barrel version, as it just had a nice balance to it and those base Stout flavors really worked well with that rich bourbon tanginess. Great beer.

Poured from 375 red waxed bottle in Cycle Brewing snifter.
A: Pours a deep brown/nearly black body with a very lively mocha colored, two finger head.
N: The roasted malts really come thru in this one, with a bit of sweet caramel and maple. The booze is slightly noticeable as it warms up a bit.
T: The maple isn't as prominent as I was hoping. That being said, it's a really nice barrel aged imperial stout. The barrel aging isn't as present either, but rather the roast shines. I'm getting alot of that sweeter Utopias notes, it's subtle but pleasant.
M: It's got a nice lively mouthfeel, with a bit of that harsh roast clinging to the back of my tongue.
D and O: It's good, I won't deny that. I was expecting more...it's like 12 degrees out, so maybe it's too warm as the bottle states its for zero degree nights. I have a few more bottles, and I will enjoy them, but most likely will not seek this out again.

Big thanks goes out to beeruser for sharing this one at a past Random Sunday Tasting! Sampled side-by-side with the base beer! Served from bottle into a SweetWater 15th Anniversary snifter. Poured pitch black with a minimal brown head. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, spice, wood, sweet alcohol, vanilla, dark fruit, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, and smoke. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, spice, wood, sweet alcohol, vanilla, coffee, molasses, dark fruit, dark chocolate, and smoke. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a very good brew. Wow! The amount of complexity that this beer has going on was nothing short of insane. This fell true for both the flavor and the aroma as it seemed to be firing on all cylinders. Even with all of this going on it still managed to be very well balanced and was able to blow your palate away with everything that was going on in it. A really well done brew that I would not hesitate to trade for in the future to have a chance to try it again. Well done guys, well done.

750 mL bottle, thanks to notjustgc for hooking me up with a bottle. It was allowed to warm before being poured into my petite Duvel tulip.
Bourbon Barrel Fayston pours jet black. Two fingers or so of mocha foam crown the beer, but head retention and lacing are just alright. The nose has a good bit of maple to it, along with aromas of bitter dark chocolate and oak. The flavor profile doesn't carry as much intensity in terms of maple (though it is still present). There's plenty of dry chocolate though, and it's joined by a more nuanced barrel aging. Oak, bourbon, brown sugar and vanilla all swim together, creating a nicely layered. beer. The body is noticeably on the thin side, and the carbonation is a bit muted, the mouthfeel is just a little bit off all the way around. Maple is a tricky ingredient to incorporate into a beer, but Lawson's Finest Liquid has done a solid job with this bourbon barrel aged version of Fayston Maple Imperial Stout.

Price - $25/bomber
After reading the Sean Lawson article in this month's Beer Advocate magazine it got me thinking. In the cellar there could be one more bottle of Lawson's Finest Liquids aging. There was and to my surprise this was it!
Pours near black with a ruby edge and a one finger creamy brown head that boils up with average staying power. A thin veil and foam edging lasts quite awhile and begs for attention. Limited lacing due to the viscous nature, oily yup. Unfiltered, the fines are noticeable but not a concern.
Aroma starts off with maple, chocolate, molasses and vanilla followed by apple and charred peat from the barrel. This is a surprise and much more pungent than I was expecting.
The flavor starts off with maple, dark fruit and bourbon but in the end I'm getting a granny smith acidic aftertaste.
The body has a medium feel and starts out smooth. Carbonation is held in check but noticeable and not unusual for the style. The finish is dry and at the end, leaves me with a bad case of cotton mouth. Usually this doesn't bother me but with the acidic aftertaste I find it unpleasing.
Overall a disappointment and not what I was expecting. For some strange reason it appears maple and I in a beer combination don't get along. My description certainly doesn't match previous reviews but this is an accurate desription with what's in my glass. If I didn't know better I 'd think this somehow got infected. It's got a wax covering and looked pretty well sealed. On a good note the alcohol was well hidden for the strength. As far as cellaring, I wouldn't recommend aging this batch.

Pours from a 375ml bottle, bottled in fall 2012, into a duvel glass
A: pours a dark black with two creamy dark chocolaty lookin head... Very nice retention and lacing looks delicious.
S: nice almost fudgey chocolate, light burbon, oak, espresso like notes, roasted malts, and the distinct aroma of maple, not overbearing but deffiantly present.
T: deep mocha espresso, dark burbony chocolate, hint of dark fruit, oak and booze and burbon on the finish... Aftertaste reminds me of nutty burbon chocolate fudge brownies.... The maple is present here as well blending in very nicley with dark chocolate and bitter roasted malts... Very well balanced.
M: heavy body, slick and viscous.... Dry body and slightly bitter roasty boozy finish... Low creamy carbonation adds a bit of velvetyness.
O: this is delicious, and very well balanced, nothing overwhelming anything else, just everything working together nicley... Great beer.

A: same as regular fayston very dark brown the only difference is| less carbonation (compared them side to side)
S: it smells strongly of bourbon but there is a sweetness in the smell from the non ba version
T:the sweetness of the maple and dark chocolate taste that comes from the non ba version really balances out the usually over powering bourbon taste in my opinion and adds to the taste
M:smooth and oily not too thick with a more chewy feel then the non ba version that reminds me of toffee
O:usually I'm not about the bourbon barrel stuff but I really liked it an it was well balanced with the other flavors really good brew

pour is rather subdued with a very rolling malt of a nose. something like butterscotch, vanilla, peanut butter breadiness. opens to chocolate but very balanced. feel is smooth is a baby's butt for being so low in carbonation. creamy silky almost like a buttery feel. palate is maple butterscotch, white chocolate notes. nice wood presents that mellows the beer fantastically. brie and caramel finish that is forever rolling. very long finish. but too smooth to feel like an elixir. hints of coconut oil. vermont is one of the best states for beer.

Thanks, AdamJackson!
Black throughout with very dark ruby edges along with a surprisingly large 2-finger's worth of dark brown, small-bubbled head. Leaves the glass dotted with stick. Pretty and appropriate.
My favorite aspect of this beer is its aroma. While there's plenty of roast, dark chocolate, and enough bourbon, the maple syrup and oak steal the show, interjecting a very rich, sweet, earthy wood and sweet syrup component. It all comes together extraordinarily well, especially as the beer warms.
The flavor, unfortunately, just isn't quite as good as the aroma. The flavor, however, is a lovely combination of chocolates, roast, mild coffee, and distinct bourbon and maple syrup. Very nice. I just wish the bourbon and maple were even more expressive.
Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
Love this beer, though I don't see it going anywhere good with age. Will open my next bottle asap.

Sampled the Oak-Aged Fayston Maple, Original Maple and Bourbon Barrel Aged versions simultaneously.
Pours a black color with a thin tan head and some small bubbles that recede to leave some moderate lacing.
Aromas begin with a majority of chocolate and roast, light earthy bitterness and honey sweetness from the maple. As it warms you get a little more oak, sweeter milk chocolate and vanilla sweetness from the barrel.
The tastes follow the nose with some dark chocolate maltiness up front and oak, molasses, lightly roasted malt and light maple in the background, plus a bit of vanilla and milk chocolate as it warms.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. Finish is a decent mix between roasty and sweet.
Overall this the best varient of the 3 sampled back to back to back but still wasn't an amazing beer. The barrel aging added the necessary sweetness to balance the dry, roasted malts and bitter molasses flavors but once again for the rarity and straight-forward flavor profile, I won't be seeking this out anytime soon.

This beer pours nearly pitch black with a tan colored head that recess rather quickly. The smell is roasty with hints of bourbon and booze but not as much as I was expecting. The taste is roasty with a bit of booze but not that much bourbon presence. The mouthfeel was a little thinner than I was expecting but still fairly full. This beer is good but not as good as bcbs.

Thanks to Bendurgin for sharing! Poured into a tulip. The color is pitch black. There is a small medium tan head.
The aroma has a nice dose of chocolate, with some licorice and some nice oaky notes.
The taste has some nice bitter chocolate, with just a hint of chocolate malt sweetness. This is pretty dry for the strength. There is a lingering bittersweet chocolate taste in the finish that only hints at some maple.
This is full bodied with soft carbonation. This tastes good. It falls short of great. It lacks some of the strong bourbon flavor other barrel aged beers have. That might be good for some, not so good for others.

Thanks a ton Alec for this one. Poured into a tulip. This one pours a black with about an inch of dark mocha head.
The aroma is slightly underwhelming. Faint with slight metallic hints and some bitter cocoa. Not enough though. The pallet is a bit more enjoyable. Nice mellow cocoa flavor with some faint bourbon lingering.
The body is medium with soft silky carbonation. Overall this one is a bit of a disapointment. Enjoyable enough but I had higher hopes.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is about what I expected, with a lot of roasted malt and chocolate, as well as some nice bourbon notes. The flavor is more of the same. The chocolate and roasted malts come through first, but there is some coffee and bourbon notes in the background, as well as some alcohol. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. First had: bottle at Waitsfield Farmers Market, Waitsfield, VT
(Replacing old review)
I'm officially willing to say that my first tasting of this was a bogus bottle. I recently sampled this, poured by Sean Lawson himself, into a Lawson's signature plastic cup. Dark brown-black color (thank you), with a small mocha head that retains well. A sharp hit of booze in the nose up front, dark malts, caramel, moderately roasty. Similar taste, dark roasty malts, dark chocolate, smoke, woody bourbon (more smooth than strong), with a touch of maple sweetness that just barely comes through. The alcohol heat is welcome. On the fuller side of medium-bodied, and quite nice overall.

750 mL cork and caged bottle shared with Adam, Fred and Jeff. Sampled alongside a fresh bottle of Fayston.
Pours a near opaque dark chocolate with a frothy, retentive tan head. Thin wisps of lacing coats the snifter. Nose is barrel heavy, with vanilla, bourbon, molasses and light oak blending with a light berry fruit and trace amounts of maple. Body has a strong roast and chocolate malt backbone with a mild maple sweetness. The bourbon aging adds a welcome layer of complexity over the regular Fayston and finishes with a slightly fruity tang. Medium bodied with low carbonation and little alcohol presence. Rich and smooth, the bourbon barrel is much more well integrated than this was fresh. Seems like these bottles are hit or miss based on some of the recent reviews, but our bottle was well received.
