Poured from the bottle into a snifter. I was lucky enough to try this along with the other three versions, and this one was my favorite.

The beer pours a dark brown color, almost black with a nice layer of off white head. The smell is full of sweet alcohol with some dark fruit and a mild maple syrup note. The flavor is quite smooth. I'm getting the bourbon with a mild maple note. There is some roast, but it mainly shows up in the finish. I'm also getting some bourbon and maple syrup in the finish. There was a pleasant oaky note throughout the sip.

A - Dark chocolate colored beer with a small one finger head that settled down to the layer of foam

S - Maple, vanilla and charred oak from the roasted malts. Not much bourbon from the barrel. Little sweetness overall

T - Chocolates, vanilla, light maple syrup, and oak to it. However, there is a strong charred malt flavor that takes over from the sweetness. The char is too overpowering for me and makes the beer have a bitterness that lingers on in the finish

MF - Medium body with chocolate malt. The roasted malt makes it too burnt and astringent for the flavor

O - This beer could have been great but the roasted and charred malts just take over. The maple and vanilla are there but overpowered by the char and bitterness

375ml grey wax bottle from the 2012 bottling. Poured into Lawson's snifter.

A- Pours an opaque jet black with a thin mocha brown head that has nice retention and leaves some spotty lacing. Very similar to the maple BA Fayston with maybe a tiny bit more head.

S- Lightly sweet bourbon and maple syrup with some underlying notes of chocolate, malts, oak, and a tiny bit of espresso. Definitely not as aromatic as the maple version but very nice non-the-less with the perfect amount of bourbon in my opinion so that it isn't too boozey smelling but adds a nice sweetness.

T- Sweet bourbon, light maple syrup, roasted malts, a bit of espresso with cream, some oak on the finish. Extremely well balanced with just the right amount of bourbon coming out to add a nice sweetness and complexity while still retaining some of the base beer flavors.

M- Medium bodied (maybe slightly on the thin side for a BA beer, but in my opinion doesn't take anything away from the beer), nice carbonation, extremely smooth, lightly creamy, very easy drinking.

O- This wasn't quite as good as the Maple Fayston, I felt like the maple came out a little bit more and the aroma was definitely a lot more pronounced. Apart from that though this beer was extremely well done. I liked this better then the base beer and I thought everything from the base beer was still retained in this beer while adding a nice sweetness from the bourbon and smoothness from the aging. In my opinion this is one of the better done barrel-aged beers out there and I'm already craving more. I highly recommend checking this out.

Drank this one right after the base beer.

APPEARANCE: Basically the same pour and head as the base. Pours out dark black and yields a one finger, medium looking, light mocha colored head with good retention. Black body and lower levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a splotchy wisp and ring. A ring remains the whole way but leaves no real lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Roasted and chocolate notes with sweet cream, vanilla, caramel and very light bourbon notes. Maple syrup isn't really a factor here, tbue the bourbon barrel and base beer are quite pleasant. Not overly bold, but interesting.

TASTE: Roasted beginning with caramel sweetness and oak bourbon notes. Lots of bourbon barrel after the swallow, with vanilla, milk chocolate, and some tart oak flavors. Cocoa powder and roasted notes accompany some decent bourbon and vanilla flavors in the bold and lingering finish. Flavorful, and more impressive than the nose.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. A little light on the palate perhaps, but very creamy smooth for sure. Even creamier than the base beer, which was impressive itself. Goes down silky smooth and finishes slightly dry. A little light, but the silky creaminess is very impressive.

OVERALL: This is a wonderfully balanced barrel aged stout, though it isn't quite impressive enough to really stand out from the crowd. I'm not sure if the extended aging on this bottle is the culprit, but the maple syrup isn't really a factor here, and the nose is a little mute to be memorable. That said, it was very interesting and increadibly easy to drink. The barrel aging worked well and the creamy feel was a real treat. An enjoyable beer that is something I could drink on a regular basis. Well done Lawson, and cheers again jbeatty.

A coffee with cream colored head forms atop which slowly dissipates into nothing. A little lacing is left on the glass. The color is black.

The nose is full of chocolate, vanilla, bourbon, wood and alcohol.

The flavor begins with some muted chocolate, maple syrup and a touch of vanilla which is covered with tanic wood. The flavor finishes with roasted grains.

The feel is medium to heavy.

Overall, I expected more bourbon and vanilla notes, especially considering that the stout was aged "for over a year." However, this brew is remarkably balanced. It's amazing that I can still taste the base stout. I can see this brew disappointing those that are fans of BCBS or similar bourbon forward barrel aged stouts. I recommend this to those that have an appreciation for balanced brews.
