750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Black with some transparency. Lots of mocha head. Great retention. Really leggy on the swirl.

Smell - Roasty as hell. Some sweetness. A fair bit of maple. Chocolate. Chalky, almost.

Taste - Still extremely roasty. Stronger maple sweetness. Pretty sweet, in fact. Chalky, burnt roasted malt. Chocolate and coffee. Bitter.

Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation. Sweet and bitter at the same time.

Overall - Really strong maple, but this stout needs it. Ridiculously roasty.

Missed the 4/10/13 Maple Beer event @ Farmhouse that featured this elixir, but a friend had archived one of the monster 23.4 oz bombers and shared it in exchange with some Lawson's Double Sunshine that I have been scoring.

Lawson's has the knack for brewing small batches of hand crafted and hand bottled beer that really scratches the itch for top shelf quality: it is indeed a privilege to have access to their amazing liquids.

Fayston Maple Imperial Stout pours a deep, deep brown that is not quite as black as their "Toast" variety (Black IPA), but a close second. The small tan head can be revived with a bit of swishing around in the glass, and the chocolaty nose has some roasted malts in there with just a hint of Vermont maple syrup in the background. Smells delicious!

The taste is an extension of the inviting aroma:sort of heavy in character, but coating your palate with a slight coffee roastiness that is balanced by a tremendous chocolate flavor, and just a touch of the boiled sap in the finish (which is slightly on the sweet side, but in a gourmet fashion).

Extremely inviting and drinkable, with a touch of booze in there that fits right in with the overall balance. Top of the shelf maple brew that is criminally hard to get your hands on!

Poured from the bottle into a snifter. I was lucky enough to have this with the other 3 variations.

The beer pours a dark brown, almost black color with a layer of tan head. The smell is a little bit sweet with a nice roast quality. There is more roast in the taste than there was a smell. I would swear there is a wood aged quality to this beer. I'm getting a mild maple syrup note behind the roasted malt. While the roast dominates, the beer still has enough balance for me. The body is on the thick side with a good amount of carbonation and a finish that is super dry.
