A - Pours a clear, dark amber-red with a small tan head that slowly fades.

S - Sweet sugary caramel, wood, vanilla cream. Lovely!

T - Caramel candy, a touch of wood and heat, but just tons of maple-caramel.

D - Lower carbonation with a medium body.

O - Sweet caramel and maple candy-like and very tasty.

500 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Deep amber. Some bubbles and a light ring around the edge.

Smell - Maple. Lots of maple. Booze. One-note, but maple does smell good.

Taste - Maple and toffee. Sweet, but not as much as I expected. Creamy then dries out very quickly.

Mouthfeel - Sweet and tasty. Not really boozy in the flavor. Creamy until the end.

Overall - Maple is beer magic, but there's no way I could drink more than a few ounces of this.

Bottle 555 2012

Pours a tawny, coppery color with an off white near finger of head. Aroma was rich, sweet caramel and maple nuts and dark malts. Similar taste, sweet, maple-y, caramel, sweet nuts. Full bodied, not too thick, not cloying either, though inherently rich and decadent. Would like to get another bottle and age it longer. I really enjoyed it.

Bottle

A - Golden with orange hues that looks like a cognac with a thicker and syrupier body. No carbonation at all.

S - Sweet maple syrup with light oak and lemon. This is a sweet nose but not a maple bomb

T - Sweet maple syrup with light oak presence to it. There is also a slight fruitiness presence to it as well as it has some light dates and berries near the middle. The finish is maple syrup with a light oak presence to it.

MF - Actually not as thick as I'd expect. It is a thick beer but it's not too syrupy or sticky. The finish has a light oak spiciness to it.

O - A sweet maple beer with a nice dark fruit presence that adds some complexity. This really wasn't as sweet as I expected it to be when you hear a beer that is essentially fermented maple. This is an interesting one that I was happy to try; however, I thought it was only OK and didn't really impress me too much.

From a 500ml corked and caged bottle into a snifter
Bottled May 2012
Brewed using malt, hops, yeast, and concentrated maple sap

APPEARANCE: Pours a small, medium looking, white head with decent retention. Burnt umber in color, slightly hazy, with slightly higher levels of carbonation. Head fades to a wisp and creamy ring. A light wisp remains until the end leaving dots of lacing down the glass.

SMELL: Maple sugar for sure, with caramel, oak and vanilla notes from the wood aging. Some alcohol in there. Nose is mild yet complex, and advertises a sweet tasting beer to follow.

TASTE: Maple syrup and caramel up front with a good dose of booze and alcohol at the swallow. Oak, vanilla, toffee sweetness and more maple sugars linger nicely in the bold and persistent aftertaste. A belly of booze reminds you of the ABV. This is flavorful, enjoyable and surprisingly well balanced.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, goes down smooth with a bit of a scratch at the swallow and finishes slightly sticky. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: This was way different than I'd expected. It is definitely on the sweeter side of the spectrum with maple syrup flavors for sure, but it is not a maple bomb by any means. Nicely balanced and quite complex with the oak barrel adding a level of flavor to the brew. An interesting and enjoyable ale, though the nose would need to be more impressive for top marks here. Definitely one I'd jump at again if given the opportunity. Thanks again jbeatty!

Big thanks to Kegatron for sharing this expensive bugger with me. Bottle 360 of 374 poured into a matching snifter. The brew appears a clear copper orange color with a yellow tint around the edges. A tan cap slowly fades leaving spotty lace sticking to the glass.

The aromatics are strong with a scent of bunt sugary quality. Some vanilla, caramel and maple-like candy all take their turn showing off their sweet residual character that entices and makes you salivate. A trace hint of alcohol is felt tingling the back of the nose.

The taste starts off reminescent of caramel then more vanilla with suggestions of maple syrup. A mild amount of oxidation and solvent booze break up the profile with some herbal hop aspects and a bit of dry earthiness.

This is a medium bodied brew with a light level of carbonation. This was a very nice dessert-like brew that was downright crushable. For 12%, this brew drinks at an alarming rate. I think I killed half my glass before composing a single thought and writing any notes. The price point on this is a bit rough but christ, after having it I would not be able to say no to buying this if the opportunity presented itself. Thank you Heath for sharing this with me!

A: Poured a copper/red/pink color with a small off--white head. Minimal retention and head. Not entirely surprising.

S: Definitely sweet, some maple syrup, caramel and brown sugar dominate the aroma. It has a bit of candy sweetness with faint raisins.

T: Similarly sweet, candied sugar and maple syrup. Slightly estery with a little bit of booze.

M: Medium bodied, moderate retention. The 12% abv is well hidden.

O: A very interesting beer. I applaud Lawsons being innovative using maple sap/syrup instead of water. Quite drinkable for the abv with a nice flavor profile.

500ml corked and caged bottle into a couple of snifters. April 2011. #360/374. Pours copper with a thin white head. Leaves back light spotty lace that slowly drips down the sides. The aroma is SWEET! I’m talking maple syrup, brown sugar, caramel, sugary dough and fruit. I’m pleased to find that is isn’t cloying in the nose however, as the complexity keeps things very interesting. The taste is pretty much the same as the aroma, very sugary on the palate but with more help from those fruity esters and some extra boozy sweetness from the ABV. The mouthfeel is fuller bodied and quite chewy on the tongue. This feels about 12% but doesn’t sting, as those aforementioned flavors eat up a lot of the booze presence here. I really liked this. I initially thought the sweetness was going to get to be too much at first but the overall complexity of this really grew on me the further I got into the glass.
