Pours a plain black color with a reasonably sized tan head.

Smell is weak--lactose, cardboard, not much else.

Taste is similar but even worse. This is borderline undrinkable.

Mouthfeel is better than the taste but still nothing to write home about.

It is St. Patrick's Day and I am drinking stouts of every stripe before heading off to an annual party. My local in-person trader, tone77, recently dropped off a huge box o' beer and this is another of that batch.

I saw no reason not pull out the stops and went with an almost-inverted pour. This always results in a huge head and this was no exception. Two-plus fingers of dense, rocky, light-tan head sat atop the beer and I awaited my chance to move in. Color was a deep-brown with garnet highlights and NE-quality clarity. Nose was chocolaty sweet as milk stouts are wont to be. Yes, Virginia, there was a smell to this one. Mouthfeel was thin-to-medium and the taste was really thin for the style. It had a mild tartness to go along with the light sweetness of the malt. Finish was equally bland and uninspired. This was not outright bad so much as just disappointing, It lacked Ooomph, flavor, anything to redeem it. How sad!

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Remember that old Pam Anderson show? VIP? Me, neither. This stuff pours a clear ruby-garnet topped by a finger of glowing khaki foam. The nose comprises pretzel, dried maple syrup, and a touch of lightly-toasted biscuit. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a hint of old Oreos in the aftertaste. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, a pretty sad little stout, one that's far too thin and even more lacking in character.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a cola color with a 1 inch head. Smell is of coffee, some chocolate. Taste is the same, a bit mild. Coffee up front, a bit of chocolate at the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Appearance: Stacked pours a black color and has some reddish hues to it like a porter normally would look, not a whole lot of light shines through but enough to see the red. It is topped with ½” of tan colored head.
Smell: This beer smells of roasted malts and coffee aromas, tasty smelling beer.
Taste: The taste is a bit disappointing the roasted and coffee flavors don’t pop like I would expect it to but it does have the creaminess that a milk stout should.
Mouthfeel: This is a quite a bit on the thin bodied side and while it is easy to drink the flavor doesn’t hang around long enough to enjoy it.

Pours a jet black color with no carbonation but a nice tan head.
Smell has a nice strong cocoa aroma. A bit of a nice milky sweetness as well.
Taste has a really nice burnt, roasted malt to it. A strong shot of milky chocolate sweetness balances the roasted malts nicely.
A medium body with a little bit of chewiness to it.
Drinkability is nice on this beer. A good balance of flavors makes this beer stand out, but go down easy. Definitely a good beer for a session to sit down and drink a six pack, or more...

Recently saw on Horny Goat's Facebook page that they had refined their recipe for this Milk Stout. Figured we were in the change of seasons so I would give it a try.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown. Not as dark as some other stouts but still quite a dark beer. Great (over 1 inch) head that leaves a strong lacing.

Smell: Sweet smells of the coffee and chocolate dominate.

Taste: Light flavor consisting of mild roast malts, coffee notes, and chocolate. All creating a nice balance that is sweet and a little bitter bite to finish.

Mouthfeel: A lighter mouthfeel to this stout.

Overall: A good brew that is worth a try. This makes a great beer for people who are hesitant to transfer to the craft beers.

Appearance: Ok foam on the glass. Motor oil brown/black. The consistency of this is definitely thin.

Smell: Some faint coffee chocolate. Really nothing overall. There should definitely be stronger notes in a milk stout.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Some sour coffee notes and that's about it. Mouthfeel is extremely watered down and off-putting.

Overall Drinkability: I can safely say this is not one of my favorite stouts. I don't recommend it. A below average stout. Nothing terrible overall, but nothing good. I'd say everything is bad-to-average.

Poured from 12 oz bottle. Served slightly chilled.

A) Looked thin on the pour. Cola brown in color. A finger of khaki colored head fizzled to a collar. Lots of carbonation noted.

S) Not much... Light coffee, roasted malt, faint cream.

T) The flavor is not offensive, because there is so little of it to try and describe. It's watery coffee with light roast and a little hops on the backend. Lackluster aftertaste...

M) It looked thin, and it was. There is quite a bit of carbonation. There is not much to this. It's drinkable from a mouthfeel standpoint, but with each passing sip, your kind of thinking to yourself, why am doing this???

O) This was not very good. I cannot recommend this beer.

A - A very clear dark brown, not nearly as one would expect for a milk stout. Color of the head is a mild opaque.

S - Smells of mild roast malts, a touch of lactose, and a nice balance of coffee and chocolate.

T - Not bad it drinks better than your typical light version of Guinness. Roasted malts are a tad subdued making way to sweet sugars and a touch of coffee/chocolate like malts. Slightly enjoyable.

M - Light and kind of watery but more body than I expected for such a poor example of the style.

Overall you could in theory pound these all day but why waste money on a whole case when their are better examples of the style. Still with no off flavors and decent taste this is not a bad milk stout.

This was one of the more drinkable horny goats. You could guzzle these stouts all day. It actually went great with a heavy pizza.

This is a water looking, smelling and tasting stout with a nice roasty flavor. The balance is just right making for an easy drinking experience. I'd like to see where they would go with a double version of this. It's sweet, but not too sweet. Just a bit hoppy. Nice.

The head is okay, but the color really isn't. While the whole of it is a dark brown color, it pours out lighter and, even in the glass, has red hues and plenty of light shining through while I can almost see through it. The head, small, creamy and tan, keeps a tight foam after it drops and leaves reasonable, if not pretty good, lacing.
The aroma only gives me roasted malts and it's possible from the smell of it that there is, in fact, some lactose here.
The roast comes out in the flavor more as an almost astringent charred note, while it gets a little tangy and sour beside. It doesn't have the strength, really, to pass as a porter (even one that isn't American), much less a stout.
The body and feel is also where there's either a bit of failure on the brewer's part to understand the style or "gateway" gone too far. It's far too light, far too thin, far too much on the crisp side than smooth. If anything, one of the strong suits of a milk stout is that the lactose gives it a smooth, creamy feel. This beer severely lacks that.

Pouring a cellar temp bottle into a snifter.
The beer pours a cola brown hue with creamy tan head of about 1.5 cm that fades gradually to an edge layer with some clingy tight lattice. Not sure about milk stout with this light of a brown color.
Aroma is fairly mild with some grainy malt and a bit of roasted notes. I also get hints of chocolate and a little bit of grassy hop. Overall nose is mild and not very clear.

First sip reveals a light body that is slightly watery textured, no smooth creamy stout qualities, furthering my doubt of this milk stout.
Carbonation is fine and a little tingly, all in all the beer is very easy to drink.
Flavor is some roasted malt and a bit of chocolate but not much else, finishes a little empty with just a hint of sweetness on my palate.
The beer is certainly not very milk stouty, but isnt flawed or bad. Just very mild and uninteresting IMO.
Im disappointed and wont be buying this one again.

A = Jet black with a creamy white head. Looked great at first, but the head didn't last long at all. Minimal lacing.

S = It was almost as if this had no smell whatsoever. Even my wife, who can pick out any smell, said it was minimal - maybe just a hint of coffee.

T = Minimal taste - just like the smell. Slight coffee/chocolaty tone.

M = Watery.

O = Meh. I liked some of Horny Goat's other beers in the sampler pack I bought, but not this one.

Reviewed on July 4, 2012. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a standard pint glass. No date or abv listed on label or on bottle.
Poured a thin reddish brown see through body, looks watered down. Thin head formed and quickly disappeared, no lacing either?! Smelled good; roasty'toasty malts, cocoa, coffee. Tastes thin and watered down, but still has light flavors of coffee and chocolate and a subtle sweetness. Not one I would look for again as there are plenty more Stouts out there that are more flavorful than this one.

Pours a fizzy tan head that bubbles down fast. Color is a dark brown.

Aroma: A sharp metallic flavor. Kind of reminds me of dust. Some lactose and creaminess. Hint of chocolate.

Taste: A little more flavor here. Kind of reminds me of Guinness. Chocolate and some cocoa powder. Creamy. Milky.

Mouthfeel: Crisp and smooth. Lighter bodied with a lower amount of carbonation. Ends dry.

Overall, I wasn't a big fan of this one. Everything was pretty off. The taste was the closest part to being to style.

L - dark brown color with a off-white head that thinned to a ring.

S - sweet aroma, roasted coffee and cream.

T - I'm from NY and the taste reminds me of a chocolate egg cream with too much seltzer.

F - fizzy and light.

O - aside from the initial whiff it doesn't represent the style well.

Bought a sampler becuase it was cheap and their advertising was fun. While the rest of the offerings from Horny Goat were ok, this beer ranks as one of the worst I ever had.

A complete miss on style, tastes like they added some black patent malt to a mild ale. There was no sweetness, I can't imagine how little lactose was put into the beer, no roast flavors which is what makes a stout, just a little black malt bitterness astringency.

They should pull this from their beer list, becuase calling it a milk stout is just wrong.

Yuch!

Beer #4 from sampler pack, and things continue to speed up down a slippery slope.

A: Caramel cola highlights the pour which comes off charcoal black in the glass. A khaki head is patchy and quick to dissipate without much fanfare or lace with is a sparse broken ring.

S: Dry chocolate, sweet black liquor, which quickly fades and loses its strength, even when constantly agitated.

T: Watery, after sampling 3 of their beers this one continues to fall in line with low expectations. How hard is it to mess up a stout/porter style? Well evidently a lot easier then I thought. Sweet but for a brief moment with no real strength for chocolate. Complete watery mess. Slight signs of watery schwarz like malting, not really sweet, a bit dry with no real chocolate base or flavor or milky quality, just a watery run off. oh did i mention watery?

M: Light bodied and a bit watery, once again unimpressed and not gonna mince words or feelings.

D: Overall drank like a watered down scharwz, rather a sweet and creamy milk stout. Disappointing from the get-go and surprised how well they managed to screw up an fairly simple style to execute. No sweet chocolate malts, milky lactose, just a disappointment. 4 down 2 to go.

The prior reviews don't seem to be too flattering, I'll do my best to remain uninfluenced...

The color isn't as dark as I anticipated for a stout (hopefully not a glimpse of whats to come), it is merely brown with ruby red highlights. The fizzy head is decent size, however fades quickly.

The aroma isn't bad, despite being rather tame. There's ample nut, coffee, cocoa and chocolate flavors. It does have that cheap thin smell (that I've grown to expect from this brewery) lurking within.

The flavors are caramel, vanilla, and cocoa but there's no grunt to them and all signs that indicate this is a true stout are out the window. The bold flavors that were present in the nose are nowhere to be found, and when all is said and done; it's nothing more than a mainstream Irish red or amber. Disappointing.

Perhaps the worst part about this beer is how thin it is. It drinks like a lager. Horny Goat, if you care at all about being true to style, add some body to this. After all, it does not say Dark Lager, or Bock on the label!

I drank it all, and frankly it was quaffable, there is nothing offensive to it and the flavors were fine. But it misfires on every cylinder. I would give it to a friend who needs to expand his/her horizons, but in no way, shape, or form could I say this is a good beer/stout. Back to the drawing board.

First one out of the assortment pack…

Pours a deep dark brown and leaves enough head to see that it did have some at one point…before the air clean swiped it away.

Smells milky, some coffee notes.

I’ve never had this style before but…very thin. My face grimaced with the first taste. Milky with traces of a stout.

Obviously not an example of the style. Still, I might pour the other one down the drain while opening a Bud Light.

Poured a very dark brown almost black color with a tan head. Sweet smell with some chocolate and a little coffee. Flavor is very light, sweet with some malt to it. Chocolate flavor with a bitter finish. Smooth drinking beer. I liked it, but I probably couldn't drink too many of them in an evening.

I'm hoping since this is a newer batch than the previous ones reviewed it will be better. I picked this up not knowing how low the scores were.
Stout like aroma with mild roast, some sweetness, mild stout yeast quality. Not offensive and getting close to as it should be.
Dark and very clear with deep red and brown in light. Smallish tan head that is creamy looking at first, but settles out quickly.
A non-offensive start, but the flavor is where it goes poorly. I'd say again, not offensive, but only touching on the best aspects of this style. What about this makes it a milk stout. It's not even a starter for the style, cuz' it doesn't hit it at all.
Body is full because of the carbonation, but no creaminess or smoothness from the body. Kinda' watery - a word that shouldn't be used in describing a stout.
It's a beer that can be consumed, but I don't know what to call it. I can't recommend this.

Impulse buy at discount liquors... single bottle to tick...

A- Not really oatmeal, not really white... dingy cap sits upon this deep brown milk stout. It is deceptive in its darkness. It actually allows visual inspection of a few inches to discern the columns of carbon dioxide rising. Lots of them actually. Modest lacing around the edges, multiple pillars seen from above of carbonation, and a thin skin of a cap remain after half a minute.

S- Faint hazlenut sweetness here, some biscuit malt. Tinges of ethanol detected on the horizons. Nothing else. Dissappoints.

T- Ugh, awful. Generic... plastic... faint metallic aura... sweetness. I can't even call it milk stout here. It has this wannabe malt presence. The hops are just sharp pointy sticks. Bitter without any flavors to complement it. Acidic character tries to pretend it is a beneficial flavor here.

M- Creamy but thin. The carbonation's benefit is to not be ultra crispy but emulsive and velvety in nature. However, as soon as it sits for a moment, you find out this beer is as thick as water. It pretends to be a stout for all of two seconds. Such a tease.

D- If you can get past the awful flavors, the dissappointing flavors, and the average visual show it isn't the worst thing. It seems to be easy enough to drink if you really really try for it.
