Darker amber in color, hazy, with a generous amount of foamy tan head. Fairly sour in the nose, grapes and leather, herbal notes and some brett qualities coming through. More of this in the taste, leather and brett, grape and apple skins, decently sour, lesser notes of dried dark fruit and sweet malts, with some of the woodiness from the barrel coming through, complimenting the mild herbal/earthy hops. Medium body, higher carbonation, and quite enjoyable overall.

A: pours a hazy brown with three fingers of beige head that recedes into a thick cap with good lacing.

S: tart grapes and some sweet fruit aromas, lots of funk, and some slight acetic notes.

T: similar to the aroma, tart and sweet fruits up front with a lot of funky flavors and some acetic notes. The finish is surprisingly clean and bready.

M: medium-light body with high carbonation, this beer is light, dry, and drinkable.

O: a good sour overall. Lots of complexity without being overly sour or acetic.

Gushed on the open. Super carbonated – huge off white head. Pours a nice murky reddish color. Smells of funk more than tart with a tad of spice notes bleeding thru. First sip is much like the nose with green apples dominating the taste. Nice mouthfeel too. Not overly sour or funky but very nice indeed. After a few swigs I am wanting more funk that that I am not getting…but still a good beer worthy of seeking.

Poured from 330mL squat Belgian-style bottle into a tulip. Bottled 11/2011. Frothed up and all over everything the instant I popped the cap. Annoying, but festive.

Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with plenty of haze and two thick fingers of frothy, fizzy tan foam. Looks a little bit more like an oud bruin, but quite good anyway.

Smell: strong sourness pervades the aroma with a nice undercurrent of sweet malt. Intriguing.

Taste: sweet malt with a bit of a dubbel or quadrupel like quality of raisin and date. This is all accompanied by a decently strong sourness. Pretty on-point for the style, although again this could easily be an oud bruin.

Mouthfeel: light body with a massive and ridiculous carbonation. Creaminess is quite good, but a bit on the evanescent side.

Overall: a good Flanders ale indeed. It's not exceptional in any category, just solidly good all the way through. That said, it is super drinkable and I'm finding myself really enjoying it (despite the mess it's made).

11.2oz stubby bottle poured into my 16oz snifter.

Live review.

A: Whoa, a bit lively here, slow snake of foam as soon as the cap is popped of. Pours a ruddy dark red almost brown color, with a tannish color head that fills the rest of the snifter up (I split the bottle with my wife, and she used the same kind of glass). Head settles into a full 1/4 thick cap and leaves some decent lacing on the glass that sticks around for ages. Good start.

S: Mellow. Very light acidity, grapes, and a light oak. Some light sweetness, and a bit of mustiness, but very light. Not a bad aroma, but weak.

T: Mellow, again. Some lightly sweet malt up front is instantly turned into a light acidity and tartness, grape skin, ripe apple, and a very light funkiness. Oak is subdued beyond what the aroma presents. Hints here and there of a briny salt character, reminiscent of a caper or olive behind everything. An odd flavor, but overall, not bad. ABV is hidden.

M: Creamy carbonation, yet on the thin side, oily. Finish is lightly acidic, drying, and long.

O: Not shabby at all. I like it, although there's some things that could be better. For the style, it's not very spot on, but as a decent American try at a sour ale, it's not bad. I think that with a bit more sour, less carbonation, and some time, this one could be killer. I'm definitely glad my brother gave me 3 of them. I'm going to revisit this one in about a year and see how it is. I doubt that's going to help the carbonation any though.

Bottle purchased and consumed on-site at the Outer Banks Brewing Station. 11oz stubby brown bottle poured into a snifter. It pours a mild brown with rich 3 fingers worth of tan froth. Constantly rising bubbles maintain more than a finger throughout the entire duration.

The aromatics are vinous and floral with some brett inclusion. Mild sourness tingles the nose letting you know whats going on before you even take a sip. Even more vinous notes emerge as it warms up with some funky blue cheese tang included as well. For a flanders, I thought it lacked a bit by not having any of the expected cherry quality or vinegar notes.

The taste is tart with lots of earthy brett notes. A bit woody with dry leathery quality. Some mild fruit like dried out apples and some raisiny character. Very mild grain is an afterthought. The finish is dry with almost a chocolate grain note and earthy tones. For this style, I anticipated cherry notes mixed with some vinegar which was absent but no complaints here.

This is a medium bodied brew with an effervescent level of carbonation. It is quite nice overall. Easy drinking and worth checking out for sure. If the price was more reasonable, I would have taken out a lot of this. But at $9 a 11oz bottle it wasnt "that" good.

A: This poured a hazy mahogany with moderate tan head. It was a gusher when I popped open the bottle.
S: It smelled like tart apple cider vinegar and sour cherries, with sweet brown sugar and funky oak and a bit of metallic.
T: It tasted like fruity grape and tart apple cider vinegar, with funky oak and metallic and sweet caramel and sour cherry. It had a clean and lasting sour aftertaste.
M: It was oily with lots of carbonation. Like a thick champagne.
D: This was a very nice Flanders Red style beer. The scent and taste had a nice balance of sweet and tart and sour. The body was solid, and the finish was surprisingly smooth, so it was easy to drink. It could probably age nicely, but I also enjoyed it fresh. Great beer considering the brew location, but otherwise about average for the style.
