A - Inky jet black and opaque with a film of unusually light-colored head.
S - It smells smokey and roasty and a little sweet.
T - Here, they pull off a nice balance of chocolate, coffee, and all the typical stout flavors that you would expect. The only problem is a little spiciness uncharacteristic of the style, which could be a result of fermentation or of hop choices. There's a really pleasant lingering bittersweet chocolate taste.
M - Very very creamy. The mouthfeel was what struck me first on my initial sip. Nice, full, creamy, and thick.
O - A very good stout. Well-balanced and well made. It lacks any distinguishing characteristic to set it apart from the rich thick stouts that flood the market. This is a stout for someone who likes a well-made, subtle beer.

Poured from a freshly filled growler into a pint glass. Midnight black with faint mahogany highlights around the fringes of the glass. Pours with a nice creamed coffee colored head, that really holds nicely.
Dry roasted barley and caramel in the aroma - almost savory. A touch of herbal earthiness on the back end.
Same dry roasted barley flavor up front. Dry smoked meat flavor underlying the roastiness. Almost semi-sweet right away, then it just really dries out into the finish as the bitterness creeps in and finishes strong. European hop earthiness at just the right level is pleasant background noise. Slick and super creamy mouthfeel. Damn easy to drink. This is a perfect dry Irish Stout.

Review from notes taken at the bar last night. Poured into a clean, clear pint glass.
A Rather typical look of opaque, dark brown body under a thin medium brown head. Fair head retention. 3.0
S Very little smell. Repeated sips reveal the dark roast malt that I expected to find. I am not impressed with this distant smell. 2.0
T Dark roast malt carries right over into the taste but it is a rather basic stout taste. Very little to no chances taken here. 2.5
M Thin and probably too thin for my liking. 2.0
D/O Fair to good. This beer leaves me with a lack of interest. 3.0

Thanks to Josh (who forgets his BA screen name) for sharing for sharing this growler on 8/23/10.
A - Opaque onyx black liquid with a creamy tan head that receded to a thin veil and virtually no lacing.
S - Dark roasted malt is at the heart of the aroma, although there is an interesting pepper character that suggests chipolte or cayenne pepper. There is also a hint of smokey peat in there, creating a unique aroma for this stout.
T - Opens with a roasted malt character with a hint of chocolate and coffee. There are lots of subtle complexities offered in every sip. While the spicy, peppery character is apparent, there are also hints of cedar wood and ash, as well as earthy and smokey characteristics. Finishes with an herbal hop bite.
M - Medium bodied with a smooth, oily texture and light carbonation, creating a soft mouthfeel overall. Finish is a bit spicy and woody with mild bitterness on the palate.
D - Very unusual take on a stout for sure. The complex flavor incorporated plenty of spicy, peppery notes and hints of smoke, which made this one interesting with each passing sip.

A black body with small head and lace patches down the glass. A decent smell of sweet and roasted malts, but very low-key. Taste is more of the same with some bitter chocolate, roasted, and possibly even coffee malts poking through a fuller-body that is a little chewey. A little spicy and syrupy; finishes with a dry backbite with almost no trace of hops. A good stout but everything is subdued; if they let the malts do more talking they'd have something here.

This beer was a nice dark brown with a single-finger tan head. The smell was deep roasted malt with a bit of chocolate and coffee. The taste was right on with the smell, starting off with some semi-sweet chocolate that gave way to a bit of coffee bitterness. The mouthfeel was nice and thick and I didn't have any problem finishing the glass. A nice little stout.
