12oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Batch #77. Thanks to funkyaudio for this one! I have been itching to retry this after the horrendous bottle I received initially.
(A)- Pours practically a pitch brown, almost black color. Produced a nice yet small frothy creamed coffee to tan colored head. Decent retention.
(S)- A nice rich body to it. Minimal roastedness. Hints at raisin, caramel, prune, molasses, and cocoa.
(T)- Similar to the smell. Very rich with a subtle roasted kick to the middle. Lots of raisin, licorice, prune, caramel, molasses, and cocoa in this.
(M)- A nice mellow carbonation level and a beautiful balance of rich and malty flavors. Almost no bite from the ABV; smooth, yet thick and rich.
(D)- A sipper if there ever was one, but a great one at that! This is a completely different beer than what I had before in my initial review. It is a great old ale. I am glad I was able to re-review this one! My old review of the infected bottle is below.
___
12oz. bottle poured into a tulip. No bottled date found, just says Batch #75 on the bottle. Very excited for this since its my first HOTD beer!
(A)- Pours a dark & cloudy brown color that produced so much foam so quickly, that it overflowed out of the glass with less than 2 seconds of pouring. Is this infected? Overcarbonated? Both?(2.5)
(S)- Smells like a sour, sweaty foot with a twist of lemon. This must be infected.(1.5)
(T)- Tastes like a sour, sweaty foot dipped in pine sol. Yep, infected. (1.0)
(M)- Way overcarbonated & sour & infected.(1.0)
(D)- I was so excited for this beer, but its terribly infected. Normally I do not post up infected reviews, but I did contact HOTD about the problem with my bottle. After a month of no response, I feel this should be posted to alert others of the issue. Im not expecting freebies or anything from HOTD, I am just incredibly disappointed after what it took to finally get my hands on a single bottle of this since it isnt distributed in my area. I just feel its rude to not respond to a consumer who is genuinely interested in their product. I will try to acquire another bottle of this & re-review it. (1.0) F [1.18]

A- brown with amber hues, opaque. Thick khaki head. Leaves a nice lacing on the glass.
S- molasses, brown sugar, caramel, sweet candies
T- Sweet and malty. Similar to the nose with molasses and brown sugar. Dark fruits and even a bit of smokiness on the finish.
M- Full body and moderate carbonation, alcohol is hidden well.
O- Very enjoyable sipper. A lot of flavor and deep character coming from this beer.

Big thanks to lazarus25 for bringing this up north.
Batch 87
A: Pours torched oak colour - Deep brown with tan-yellow highlights. Just a whisp of sandy head, that really there just to prove it's not a wine. The ale is murky and appears thick in the glass - full of sediment & rustic.
S: Full of alcohol esters with smooth vanilla & dark dried fruits, cherries, plums and raisins. Sweet chocolate with a solid presence of oiled leather and fresh wet wood. Overall sweetness of buckwheat honey shines through.
T: Molasses and smooth vanilla with nuts that give way to grains and finishes earthy and rustic. Alcohol vapours is noticeable on the tongue, but lacks any burn or fire breath.
M: Thick and chewy with a syrup feel on the palette. Offers some puckering dryness at the mid point and on the finish that support the flavours.
O: A sophisticated drink that might pair well with cigars and smoking jackets, in a formidable leather wing back chair with your hounds in front of a crackling fire recounting that day's pheasant hunt.

A: dark, baked wood-meat color... interesting sort of chestnut or chocolaty brown hue... somewhat turbid and primitive.... some foam on the pour, but it took a nap
S: cocoa-dusted coffee cake... measure of toasted bread crumbs... mild phenolic mist coming through the cracks, floral-wood.... superb balance of the elements
T: like a smoky doppelbock - immediate comparison to a slightly silkier Celebrator, but with an almost cherrywood-smoked melanoidin-caramelized quality.... but clean... undeniable salivatory concentration of flavor, but floats wonderfully atop the smooth phantom-fruity alcohol
M: the core is concentrated on the top, soft fresh water carries it.... not as dense a malt foundation as it suggests.... still solid, hardly meek... surprised how clean the finish is.... it sits on the palate momentarily before quietly washing off....
O: I don't see how you can call this an "Old Ale" - it's an old style, I'm sure.... straddles a few styles.... excellent and more or less unique for what it is
