In the arts district, down by the river. Wedge is on the bottom level of a wedge shaped building with a junkyard vibe going on outside of the brewery. There was a pizza-truck on site that appeared to be cranking out some pretty awesome za's.

The inside was small and quite crowded. I dug the peanut situation and certainly got the impression that Wedge was far less touristy than some of the other breweries in town.

Not a lot on tap, as expected, but the raspberry imperial stout was really good and the potent triple IPA helped warm the body after a blustery walk from the city centre.

Rad place.

After waiting and waiting for this place to open we finally got a chance to visit during this recent trip to Asheville as we traveled to town for the BrewGrass Festival.

A funky, crunchy joint...just like I expected. A small inside tasting area and bar with nice wood decor and a fine view of the brewery through the glass behind the bar. A much more interesting and social meeting area awaits outside.

A long concrete bar with a mish mash assortment of chairs and tables invite folks to gather in their groups, drink a few pints and chat. With an extended season of outdoor seating in Asheville this area will be the focus of Wedge.

Seven beers on tap during this visit with a nice rundown of standards, with an IPA, pale ale, porter, wit, Belgian abbey and Karl's most famous beer....Golem, a Belgian IPA.

Food is listed as N/A for all they have for you to nosh on are free peanuts from the bar. The Wedge is more of a glorified tasting room and not a full service brewpub. Service is do it yourself go to the bar and order from the tenders. No wait staff comes outside to refill your pints....which is just fine with me.

All in all Wedge Brewing is a great place to meet up with friends, socialize over a few pints of great beer and enjoy the night air of Asheville!

I was thrilled to finally be able to make it in here on my last trip through town. Soo many new places to see. Dropped in here on my way home to check it out. I had been a fan of their beer for a while and wanted to check it out. Really cool, laid back place struck me as quaint from the moment I walked in. Reminded me of a little place in the village or something. Not cramped, but small with a couple people just basically hanging out. Had four offerings on tap when I was in there, but I had already had a rough day so I chose to just scope, say hello and save the beer for next time. A solid stop and next time will have to hang out for a little while

Yet another place in Western NC that was just this side of impossible to find. After twice around the block and finally asking a kindly local (look, I am a guy, we are known for our reluctance to ask for help), we found Wedge on the unmarked lower level below the street, accessible at the end of the road and around the corner. Yay!

A fun place with a small bar and some stools and bar rails around the wall (some of which my wife had to reach almost above her head) with buckets of peanuts to snack on (awesome!).

A nice beer selection, though samplers were not available, which was kind of a drag. I had a tasty IPA before we moved on. A nice place I'd be happy to check back in on.

Another stop that required two visits - one during a homebrew festival and another the following day.

Atmosphere: Wedge is located in the arts district, at the base of Asheville near but not quite abutting the French Broad River. The brewery is located in a strip of shops and studios and requires that you go down a brief flight of steps. Admittedly had a hard time finding those steps the first time around. Metalwork art lines the walkway at the bottom of the step leading to the bar and an auxiliary bar further back. There are several seating areas, including tents set up in the parking lot. The bar is small, crowded at times, with a chalkboard taplist. Free peanuts too!

Quality/Service: Saturday was a zoo, so I'll focus on Sunday. In the more laidback hours, the staff is talkative and relaxed. We chatted for a few. Dustier and dirtier with a pronounced art feel. The outside deck has a fan that mists as it oscillates - nice for a hot day.

Selection: 7 beers on tap; six in the main bar and the IPA only available at the auxiliary tap. Strange set-up and I purposefully chose not to investigate. We worked our way through most all of the line-up. The super saison, advertised as bretty, was good but lacking in brettyness. The IPA was good, as was the witbier and pale ale. The other offering that we tried, the 3rd Rail double IPA was, as advertised, quite close to a barleywine with a slurry of hop thickness.

Food: Free peanuts! Other than that, nothing.

I'll be honest. For the life of me, I have no idea why this place would get a good beerfly review, no matter how much you might like this brewery's beers.

Located in the what I gather has become the trendy River Arts District, the area looks to be a run down industrial area that is currently experiencing rejuvination and considerable gentrification. There are now a number of art and pottery studios in the area, as well as a few cafes.

One thing that would be helpful is for the BA site to provide a bit more information about this place's location. The upper street area of Roberts avenue doesn't actually show a building with the 125 address (there is 123 and 127, but no 125), and if you're not from the area, you might end up leaving before you notice that down below in the back of the upper buildings on Roberts avenue, is the Wedge brewery and taproom. There are no signs, so it takes a bit of work to locate the parking area (in a field), which you can locate by driving further down Roberts and making a right turn into a field.

As for the brewery area itself, it consists of a smallish taproom with a few stools at a smallish bar. The taproom is pretty stark with no decorations to speak of, but with a chalkboard listing the beers poured that day, along with pitcher, pint and growler prices. Patrons stand in line to pick up pints, pitchers or growlers, and then meander back outside to wherever they plan to drink them. Outside there are a few tables and chairs strewn around a small patio and into the field area. Like I said, the area still has the look of a slightly run down industrial area. I guess it's OK, but why anyone would give the atmosphere here more then an average score is a mystery to me.

The selection the day I was here consisted of 6 different beers I believe. I tried three of them, and found the helles bock to be the best of the bunch. Otherwise, I can't say I was exactly bowled over by anything I sampled, and I thought the 3rd rail IPA flat out awful.

Service was friendly, no complaints there. However, it consisted of a pretty friendly employee at the cash register pouring you a pint or pitcher when you got to the head of the line. He would also pour free small samples if you wanted to try something before making up your mind. There's no table service of course, and no food to speak of either. They do provide complimetary peanuts I believe, along with bowls to put them in.

Prices were quite reasonable I thought. Pints were $3.50 a pop, while pitchers were $10.

The Sunday I stopped by Wedge was doing a fine business and I can see why. They make decent beer and it was a nice day to sit outside with some friends with a few beers. If you are a fan of Wedge beers, then I would recommend stopping by some afternoon. Otherwise, it's a place I'd recommend stopping by one time to check out the current Wedge line-up, and leave it at that.
