Golden yellow color with a thin white head above. Fresh pils malt sweetness, warm dough, and spicy noble hops in the aroma. Flavor is of the same, authentic quality: pale, biscuity malt and spicy/floral hop bite...super refreshing. Light, crisp, and effervescent. Simple, yes, but very well executed. A good Pilsener is hard to find.

amber color emerged from it with gold interlaced throughout. A very nice three-inch high head of lace then came over the top and settled down slowly into just a thin film

surprisingly hoppy. Lots of notes of fresh grass with a very very light hint of grapefruit, which was layered very nicely on top of the grain like base. Really nice light profile though with a clean and clear essence about it. The flavor followed along pretty much perfectly. There was a nice amount of malty bread like grain in the flavor, but it was definitely hopped up in the typical west coast style, especially for a Pils. Nice crisp clean refreshing

On tap at the brewery in all its metallic glory. Drunk 9/6/10, reviewed from notes taken the same.

Alcohol was listed at 5.3% on the board, I suspect it changes from batch to batch - hopefully because they are still tweaking this one.

A. Unfiltered? Hazy, anyway. Some active bubbles. Richer straw (contradictory I know, deal) yellow. Low-to-no head. No lace. :(

S. Vague pale malt, sweet, hint o' honey, Noble hops are there, but are timid. Just rather low (being served too cold doesn't help either) but even so, this could be more snappy and characterful. Nothing "wrong", just not much of the right.

T. Taste follows the nose here. A basic, decent Czech Pils, you know the drill. I know the Wedge can do better than this. You should not have competition from Czechvar when yours is this fresh. Easy to put back, but needs more malt fun and more hops all around, methinks. The only way this is a departure from the style is that it's more reserved than most.

M / D. Slightly better - clean (it should be), quenching Pils that goes down easy but is still rather bland and unadventurous. I'm all for stylistic accuracy, but the fact that I know the caliber of the Wedge brewers makes me review harsher than normal. Get some lace on this guy, up the hop aroma, filter this sucker, and crank the malts up just a bit - your customers, or at least I, will thank ya.

Appearance: Faintly hazed, pale straw-hued body with a light, tight, white head.

Smell: A nose of German pilsner malt along with notes hinting of spice, zesty dried herbs, and even lemon.

Taste: Sturdy base of pils malt, slightly tangy, lightly sweet and with a small hint of firm graininess. Floral, spicy herbaceousness and a touch of dry lemon from the Noble hops. Modestly bitter. Finishes dry and crisp with a light, lingering bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-thin body. Medium-plus carbonation.

Drinkability: A simple, though nicely constructed and well-balanced pilsner from Wedge.

Julian Price, Czech Pilsner, 5.9%. On tap and served in a pint glass at Wedge Brewing Company's tasting room, Asheville, NC.

Appearance: Pours a transparent but full-hued golden straw body, complete with one finger of eggshell white head of average retention. The interior carbonation is sparse and slow and well-distributed, and the ultimately faded head leaves attractive sheets and fingers of side lacing as well as a uniform surface dust.

Aroma: Simplistic but natural and authentic. The backing malts are biscuity, crackery, typical Pilsen, but are backed up by some dry, grassy, hay-like notes. The classic one-two punch, and pretty inviting.

Taste: Sweet for a classic Czech, and sweeter in the mouth than I would have expected from the nose. The malts are similar in consistency to the nose - biscuity and crackery - but less well-attenuated. However, that's not to say they're without a great deal of noble balance - grassy, herbal, and even slightly vegetal notes meld well with a mild to moderate bitterness, a little high for a CP but really enjoyable nonetheless.

Mouthfeel: Sports a moderate body with good embedded effervescence. The end result is a subtle but even and full-feeling brew.

Drinkability: Not the lowest of abv%s on what's supposed to be an easy-drinking, outdoors, fun-in-the-sun brew, but there's more than enough flavor and spark here to make up for the slightly above average alcohol content. This is a solid pilsner that hits most of the right notes without rocking anyone's socks off, and I hope it becomes a regular staple of Wedge's rotation - it's the kind of beer that we need more of to peel away BMC drinkers from, well, BMC. Here's to Wedge for a great, classic, easy-drinking product (that went well w/ peanuts). Cheers!
