A: Pours a dark brown with some amber highlights and a small tan head that rises and falls fairly quickly.  Minimal lacing left behind on the edges of the glass.  

S: Aroma is pretty subdued, but is comprised of roasted malt, dark chocolate, and some coffee.  A touch of hops are evident in the foreground, but that's about it.  Despite not being overly complex, it has a well balanced aroma. 

T: The taste is also somewhat muted, but is again pretty well balanced.  Chocolate and roasted malt come out first, with hints of roasted coffee beans and some hops.  Toned down, but tastes great. 

M: Medium bodied with a  moderate level of carbonation.  A little thin, but smooth and creamy.  Nice feel on the palate.  A bit of a drying effect on the back end after each sip. 

D: Very, very drinkable.  Alcohol is hidden completely and the taste, despite being predictable, is really pleasant.  Great balance and nice feel, making this a perfectly drinkable porter.

I think the info said 7% abv. Tap at Revolution Pizza.
Rather black pour, frothy cream colored head. Not a lot but retained pretty well.

Aroma has loads of malt and caramel. Some chocolate.

Taste is a very nice blend of malt, maple and some peaty chocolate. Finishes with some of the caramel, hint of citrus and cocoa.

Nearly creamy mid body. Just a slight warming to it. Goes down real easy. Well done by Wedge.

A: Pours a dark brown with a small tan head. Little lacing and not much head retention.

S: Smells of slightly roasted malts with a little cocoa behind it.

T: Taste of Coffee with a mild sweetness to the finish. roasted malts/cocoa with a nuttiness in there. Good thickness to this porter.

M: Light carbonation, very smooth and medium bodied.

D: Good representation of a porter. Nothing super fancy but very drinkable. Could be a session beer but the heaviness I think would fill me up after a few.

Glad to have a chance to finally try a bunch of new brews from Wedge. Pretty much cleaned the taps out over the last week there.

Nice smooth brown color with a small head of tan on top. This gives way quickly to a slight bit of lacing around the sides but not much else in the way of a head forming on the top here. Aroma is light roasted malts, hints of semi sweet chocolate and a touch of coffee that all blends together quite nicely albeit lightly. Flavor is about the same with a light blend of coffee and chocolate that comes together quite well. Smooth, medium body is well carbonated and allows the flavor to site nicely on the tongue and roll through with a very drinkable flavor.

Overall a solid little porter, needed a little more for me, but cannot complain. Really did the job nicely.

Very dark brown, not quite black. Tan head. Smells sweet, almost like brown sugar. There's a slight roasty smell to it as well, but it's definately not as pronounced as in some other porters I've had. Tastes quite sweet, but not so much as to make it cloying, roasty, vaguely chocolately. It's a fairly 'thick' feeling beer. I had a couple of pints of this but I'd guess I would be filled up if I had to much more.

Poured chilled into a pint.

A - dark brown color w/ ruby hue at the base of the glass, thick cap of beige. A good amount of lace forms and the ale has a beautiful cascade from deep brown to tan as it is poured, the bead is tight

S - A light beany coffee smell w/ the smell of dark bread and mild cocoa w/ a light spice nose. The aroma is mildly yeasty but a decent aroma of chocolate and roasted malt dominates

M - The feel is smooth w/ roasted malt and medium carbonation w/ med body and a dry/mild sweet and nutty finish

T - Creamy flavor combines w/ roasted ala chocolate w/ a dry taste of nuts and cream infused coffee w/ toasted flavors adding to the complex malt taste. The ale is nicely balanced w/ mild sweetness and some cocoa notes, finishes nutty w/ subtle spice of hops

D - A very solid porter, I enjoyed this thoroughly. The quaffable qualities are there - another winner from Wedge in my book

A: The porter is a dark, well porter-ish, color. Dark brown, almost black, tones are lightened by the occasional coppery red hue. Generally though, this is dark. A creamy off-white head sat atop the beer.

S: The nose is loaded with bitter chocolate. Following are roasted grains and burnt toast and a bit of coffee (but not much). After having had New Glarus's Old English Porter, I've gotta ask, where is the sourness? (j/k)

T: While the nose may be pedestrian, the first sip really hooked me. Cocoa and semi-sweet chocolate are prevalent, creating a sweet/bitter contrast between the two elements. The porter base has more than enough in the way of toast and burnt malts. The finish has a cocoa powder sweetness that manages to overtake the semi-sweet aspect. A pretty good porter, as they go.

M: The mouthfeel is robust, nicely moving between sweet, bitter and roasted. There isn't much in the way of booze to get in the way of the flavor.

D: A porter that got better with each successive sip. Another notch in Asheville's belt.

Kudos to my sister-in-law for consistently bringing me good beer from Asheville when she comes to visit. I tried this beer knowing nothing about it and decided that it tasted remarkably similar to an English porter I'd recently had, and that it was different from the American porters that I love. Lo and behold, this is classified as an English porter, which makes me feel validated. The web site says it has a "west coast twist." I'm not sure what that is, except that I could have sworn there was a faint peach flavor in there. Am I crazy or did they use a small amount of west coast hops? Certainly this is not a hoppy beer. It pours just like a porter should, with a rich brown to black tone and coppery red highlights. I couldn't discern any significant aroma other than simple carob. The beer itself seemed a tad thin to me, but so did the last English porter I'd had--is this a style thing? I certainly enjoyed the beer. Despite the mixture of sweet dark malts the beer finished nice and dry. This worked very well with some "mini cupcakes" after dinner. For what it is worth, the beer paired best with the red velvet and strawberry cupcakes better than the chocolate ones. A pleasant experience all around and a very solid brew. I can't wait to try the Wedge's other beers sometime soon.
