A kinda small old-rustic log cabin-type of place. We had our meal at the bar. The place still gets quite a bit locals, usually having a drink at the bar. I actually think I was the only out-of-towner there. The one thing that I saw here and at the Sportman's Bar down the street was that both bartenders were rolling dice for money with the patrons.
Service wasn't bad, the older bartender was a really casual guy. My only real gripe were the prices. I'm sure the restaurant does a good business when they have the brewery recommending all the tourists to dine at the Glarner Stube, but they could lower the prices just a smige. Its good that you can get a sandwich off the lunch menu for around $8 with a side potato but all the non-sandwich items were at least $12 or more. $9 for cheese curds? Already spent $100+ on NG beer, which explains my frugalness. The other person I was with got a schublig for $17 and it was just a plain long sausage and while it was good, but not anything great, especially with the price. I was also surprised how bland the acclaimed roesti potato dish was. While they give you a hardy portion (6-inch in diameter) it had little flavor and was very greasy. $31 for 2 people, 2 half pints (1 was free) and we weren't really all that full.

The score I gave was a little twisted due to the horrible, horrible, absolutely pathetic service my wife and I received. It's not like the guy behind the bar was trying to be rude, and he was attentive when my wive's or my own glass neared empty, but it was just the way he staggered over and stared at us, without saying a word, waiting for our next beer selection. Or when he just walked over with the order pad and stared at us as we looked over the menu, not saying a word, and not moving, just leering and waiting for us to tell him what we wanted. It was very uncomfortable. Without a doubt, however, the best was when the bill came. I was in the bathroom, relieving myself into the, yes, very large urinal, but my wife informed me of the transaction. He walked over with the bill and loomed, blank-faced over my wife, as she fumbled around for the cash. Then when he returned with the change, he once again stood over her, waiting for his tip. Very odd, especially due to the fact that I don't think I heard more than 7 words come out of his mouth.
Other than that, I love the place. The authentic Swiss cuisine is a fun change and the all NG tap line is great. New Glarus rarely deviates from outstanding in any of their styles, so it is nice to have such a large selection.
So I didn't really want to go into a bitch session, but it almost ruined an otherwise great experience. I will definitely return to the Stube, but maybe next time we will sit in the dining room.

Nice authentic swiss stube, stopped in after New Glarus Brewery for a snack and some beer before checking out some of the local shops. Sounded like the best bet on the free beer ticket that I got from the Brewery's beer tasting. After visiting I no doubt believe this to be the truth. Better selection on tap of New Glarus beer then the Brewery itself and in a nicer atmosphere. Service wasn't horrible but not great. Had an appetizer that was very good and all the New glarus beers I tried were great.
If I found myself out that way again I would go back.

Stopped in here for lunch before the New Glarus tour, 9 Jul 2011.
Copper bar top to the left, seats in back. We were there for lunch, just a couple of folks at the bar but dining room was about 90% full at noon. All New Glarus on tap, including Belgian Red. Dining room is all wood with some older farm type implements on the wall as decoration.
We tried the fondue, a couple of sandwiches, the roesti and beer cheese soup, as well as five beers. Total damage was $66 before tip, a little on the high side for lunch IMO.

Stopped here on a Sunday afternoon after going to New Glarus. The whole town is Swiss themed, one of the better examples I have seen in the US. It is definitely more alpine themed.
This particular place is also heavily themed, it does seem a bit like a Swiss bar inside. There isn't too much seating, but we got a place.
The menu has lots of Swiss foods and German styled dishes. The Rösti is pretty tasty. They seem to use alot of local ingredients as well.
The taplist consists entirely of New Glarus from Apple Ale to spotted Cow, there was an array of solid choices. I went with a Franziskaner though. They also have Quoellfrisch and a few BMCs and imports and Stone IPA which I would think is soon to be discontinued.
The service is friendly and prompt. The prices for food are a bit expensive but the beer is reasonably priced.

Visited August 31st, 4:15-4:45ish
Having just completed the Hard Hat tour at the Hilltop brewery and filled up with gas at the BP across the tracks (Hint: very good selection of NG sixers at that station), I went back to New Glarus' charming little downtown for a last taste of the beer 'at the source'. A friend in Portland, OR (where I live happens to be a Wisconsin native and HIGHLY recommended a stop at Glarner Stube.
I parked nearby and found the place easily enough; it's a mid-block brick building with a small wood-shingled overhang and some 'Alpen' scenes pained on the facade above. Some raised text near the top of the street face reads 'SALOMON STUESSY 1901' - so there's some history in these walls. Up the couple of steps (placed right outside the front door - you'd better remember that if you've had one too many - or risk taking a tumble) and into a warm, wood-cladded room I went. Seriously, every surface is covered in wood (well maybe there's a little stucco here & there); it's an eclectic 'rustic lodge' feel with steins, swords, and taxidermied things. A large black cowbell hangs over the bar -a lovely copper specimen that seats maybe twelve- and was clanged ceremoniously once for no apparent reason. I grabbed a seat at the end of the bar, closest to the old barber's chair dedicated to 'Gary'.
Before anything else happened I smelled meat. I mean the most delicious smoky and spicy sort of stuff that had my mouth watering instantly. The culprit? A hanging rack of 'landjaegers' from Ruef's Market a couple doors down the street. They're basically dried pork/beef sausages that put to shame any jerky or Slim Jim you've ever tried. I will never forget that aroma - I left with 2 pairs ($3.50 each)... then bought two more pairs at Ruef's before leaving town. My time was short as I had to be at a dinner with family in Illinois by 7pm, so a meal will have to wait til next time (maybe summer 2013?).
For beers, there are 8 taps of all New Glarus stuff - mostly the standards (Spotted Cow was ordered a couple of times while I was there). I asked for and received a tall goblet of Wisconsin Belgian Red -mmm, those cherries! I was a little surprised that everyone at the bar was drinking wine, cocktails or - in one instance- a Coors Light. A couple locals, geared up in Badger apparel, seemed to have begun tailgating extra-early for the next day's game. A couple women chatted with one another: "Hey, are you goin' up to Cheese Days this year?" Another female barfly: "You betcha! It's been ages since I've seen the parade!". Good stuff - makes me want to go to the Cheese Days Parade, if such a thing exists.
Really liked the place - the only drawback was the bartender was a little slow and kinda awkward... especially when it came to paying my $13 tab ($6 for the beer & $7 for meat). He just stood over me in a weird way, watching as I added up the tip in my head and signed my name. There wasn't much interaction during the visit either, but he seemed friendly enough with others and the rest of the staff was courteous.
I plan to go back again for a real meal and more time in town. My family took me to New Glarus a couple of times growing up in the 80s and early 90s, and the memories are fond. Thanks to Tom (DiabolikDUB) for the recommendation!

Went here for dinner and a few more beers after going on the New Glarus Hard Hat Tour on 1/8/2010.
The atmosphere is a very quaint bar / tavern like setting that is coated in warm wood. TV's are present in the bar area which is moderate to large in size. The dining room has about 12 tables which are simply in a medium sized room offset from the bar.
The service here was pretty good. We were told that you could not order food at the bar on Friday (even though the young women working told us otherwise). We were constantly monitored (being one of only three groups in the dining room). No complaints at all.
The selection of New Glarus beers was great. 8 taps which were all $3.50 a pint (except for the retired Alt which was $5 a pint). Nothing super rare (with the exception of the Alt which I have seen here and there for the past 6 months), but lots of great seasonals and year round beers that tasted super fresh.
The food was good and was reasonably priced, but not as impressive as I was led to believe. The fried cheese curds were amazing, as were the swiss potatoes (rosti? hash brown style with lots of butter). I had the Swiss meatballs and my father had the veal stroganoff. Both dishes were good, but not outstanding. However, it was a very different cuisine that I am not that familiar with, and I could see myself enjoying other dishes on the menu.
The beers are very cheap, the food is a little bit pricey, but the overall place is solid. A great place to eat if stopping at the New Glarus brewery. Definitely get the cheese curds.

Atmosphere - The Glarner Stube offers men the unique and perhaps life altering experience of urinating in the Midwest's largest urinal. This alone warrants at least a 4 for atmosphere, but Glarner Stube has even more going for it - it's built like a traditional Swiss lodge, nearly everyone serving you is Swiss-American, and the food is very traditional. The Stube is also a local favorite in a small town so if you go in the afternoon you can drink edel-pils tappers and shoot dice with wonderfully drunk old codgers all day long. Deb Carrey has been known to throw one or two back here as well.
Selection/Quality - Ten taps, ten New Glarus beers on tap. The Glarner Stube might as well change its name to the Glarner Stube Restaurant and New Glarus Tied House. About 25 bottles are offered including any New Glarus beers that they don't have on tap and a few German bocks and Hefes. Reminds me of all the old European cafes that have remained loyal to one brand of brew for hundreds of years or more.
Service - Excellent. Friendly and folksy, prompt, and helpful.
Food - Swiss/Wisconsinite cuisine featuring schnitzel, geschnetzeltes, fondue, veal chops, pastetli, and my favorite Swiss dish of all, Roestti potatoes. Of course there is a popular Friday Fish Fry too. This may be America's "Little Switzerland," but it's still in Wisconsin.
A trip to New Glarus is not complete without a stop either here or at the nearby New Glarus Hotel. I've slightly preferred the Glarner Stube since I was a kid but nowadays the beer puts it far and away the best place in town. Don't miss out on the experience, food, and beer.

This was our stop for lunch before the hard hat tour at New Glarus Brewery. Lots of old world decor makes for a great atmosphere. They also had all kinds of old New Glarus bottles decorating the bar. There was also nothing but New Glarus beers on tap as well; at least 8 of them if I remember correctly. The food on the menu is authentic and therefore a little pricey, but high quality and well worth it. Do not pass up the cheese curds. Seriously. The bar and waitstaff was very friendly and attentive. I definitely plan on going back next time I'm in town.

Pre-Great Taste 2010
Stopped in for lunch before all the Madison pre-parties got underway. We took over the corner of the front bar, and watched the beer geeks pour in from far and wide. Elderly locals seemed a little baffled by all the midday traffic.
As others have said, Glarner Stube is a quaint & cozy Swiss lodge and tavern. The bar has a copper top and 10 New Glarus taps, including the current Unplugged Abt. There was a certificate posted from New Glarus that stated their taps are maintained to brewery standards. Draft pours were $3 for 8oz. or $5 a pint. They also serve Quollfrisch, an Appenzeller Swiss beer.
The atmosphere is top notch, exuding the Swiss equivalent of German gemutlikeit. A collection of steins, tap handles, and New Glarus bottles (possibly each one ever made) line the wall behind the bar. Ornately carved wood details give the bar a cozy, cabin-like feel. The back room is more the restaurant "Stube" section, which I hadn't visited for a few years.
Service was timely and friendly, and the food was great. A few of the traditional dishes were more expensive, but unique. Roesti potatoes were a hearty side, and served family-style to share. My Reuben had a thick cut of corned beef, and very hearty too. Overall, a must-stop when visiting the brewery in town.
Please note: CLOSED for the season in February - March.
