Had this at $1 draft night at the Shippen Place Hotel. Pours what appears to be black in color. Hard to tell for me as I was outside on the patio as the sun went down. Didn't retain much head however. Smelled mostly roasty with otherwise a clean smelling aroma. Maybe a little coffee from the roasts, but I thought it was mostly subdued. Didn't get much smokiness from the malts; I think maybe just enough was added to this beer to add a little complexity but that's about it. Tasted roasty with a light mouthfeel. Would have liked to see better head retention but a nice beer nonetheless.

Im sampling a cold 12 oz bottle poured into a glass mug.
The beer pours a dark rich cola brown with ruby highlights. A .5 cm creamy tan head foams up after an aggressive pour and fades to a wispy island after only a few seconds.
The aroma is roasted malt to the point of being smokey, I didnt anticipate just how smokey this would be. The label says dark lager, but BA has it as a rauchbier. I go with the latter and move on. I also get a little brown sugar, but make no mistake the nose is smokey, not campfire ash, just burnt wood.
First sip reveals fine fizzy carbonation that tickles on each sip.
Also makes for some pretty quick and hefty burps, that feature brown sugar and a bit of black licorice note.
the texture is crisp and clean and the beer is immensely drinkable.
The flavor of the beer is malt and malt. Again I get some light brown sugar and a bit of roasted malt. There is some smoke that lingers on each sip, but otherwise the finish is fairly clean.
I enjoy this beer and its fairly robust flavor profile mixed with clean easy to drink qualities.
This I would buy again and would recommend to folks that appreciate the style.

Poured into a pint glass.
A: Dark, nearly opaque, red-brown with two-finger, off-white, creamy head that lasted a couple of minutes. Ok lacing.
S: Roasted and smokey malt.
T: Light sweetness and light bitterness. Roasted and smokey. Notes of chocolate.
M: Medium bodied with lively carbonation.
O: True to style. Carbonation was a bit much. Other than that, good beer.

Thanks to my RS guy TroyG2352 for this one
App- It poured a dark brown, maybe more like a soda with a good blend of colors and moved into a off khaki head with some lacing down the side. Was okay. Nothing fancy solid.
Smell- It was way to sweet on the nose. It had too much sugary black licorice and not too much smoke to balance it all out.
Taste- WTF happened to this. Its just wayyyy to sweet and has overpowering licorice. Touch of smoke and some meat behind it. I cant finish it. I took 3 sips and fed it to the sink.
Mouth- Light, thin body with a smooth carbonation. Residual black licorice and candy.
Drink- Not for me. I tried it. Probably the worst Rauchbier I have had.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of roasted malts and smoke. Taste is roasted malts, meaty, a good bit of smokiness. Feels full bodied in the mouth and overall, although I am not a huge fan of this style, this was an enjoyable beer.

Served in a pint glass
Appearance – Served a deep brown-nearly black color with a medium off white head. The head faded to leave a moderate amount of lacing.
Smell – Roasty malt aromas are heaviest and are mixed with some smoke. There are also some hints of sweet chocolate mixed in the nose that meld well with the smoke and roast.
Taste- The taste starts out a bit on the more roasty malt side. Some hints of chocolate are also present initially. The sweeter chocolate fades over time with a smoky flavor that takes its place. At the very end a very light bitter coffee flavor comes into the flavor, giving a slightly more bitter smoky chocolate flavor on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body is a bit on the creamier and thicker side with a medium level of carbonation. Rather appropriate for the smoky chocolaty flavor.
Overall – A nice easy to drink brew. One that is well worth trying.

Color is very dark brown, almost black. Thinnish head goes down fairly quickly. Nose is very mild, a little sweet, not especially indicative of the taste. I couldn't really perceive any smoke in the nose immediately after it was drawn, and not much after it had stood a bit either. Taste is nicely balanced between sweet malt, lightly bitter coffee and smokey with some meaty/savory character. Very nice Rauch. I will certainly look forward to trying more offerings from Roy Pitz Brewing if this is an indication of their beers.

My newest favorite PA brew!! So good and different!
A - Relatively dark black opaque color...quick fading off white head...
S - Smokey roasted sweet malt, a hint of chocolate and coffee, and a slight herbal sarsaparilla note...I can't wait to drink it!
T - Superbly balanced...the malts are the star...deliciously smokey...enough of a hop kiss to keep it from being too malty...so tasty I ordered another!
M - Creamy and crisp, medium bodied, definitely not as heavy as it looks...since it resembles a heavy porter or stout...
Overall - An excellent rauchbier and my new favorite dark lager...so different and delicious...extremely drinkable...easy to session especially if you are a dark beer fan. Give this one a try and you will be surprised how much you like it! Good job Roy Pitz!
I can't wait to try a Roy Pitz porter or stout...I bet they would make an awesome coffee or imperial stout!
I'm very impressed with this brewery!
Cheers!

A- Black with a light tan head that starts off vigorous but fades quickly.
S- Mild roasted malt aromas with a hint of smoke.
T- Strong upfront malt flavors followed by a slight sweetness which then turns into spicy and smokey flavors that linger on the tongue.
M- Light-medium bodied with moderate carbonation.
D- Highly drinkable. It's very flavorful but not overpowering.
This is probably my favorite brew from Roy Pitz. I've had their Fat Daddy Sacks and Blonde on tap back in November and wasn't very impressed. I was convinced to take a visit to their brewery after visiting my local homebrew show. I wasn't disappointed. They gave free samples of every beer they had on tap. There Quad was delicious as well.

Finally got a roy pitz brew, at the brewhouse...
Poured into a standard pint glass, color is very solid black with tan head, that lasts and laces.
Smell is slightly smokey, mixed with roast, Otherwise clean.
Taste is very well done, dunkel upfront in terms of mild roast, clean flavors, followed by a nice light smokiness, sometimes mixed with a bubblegum type flavor
Mouthfeel is slightly lingering for dunkel, sits on the to gue, but could be a product of the smokiness
Overall, nicel done brew, clean dunkel, flavor light smokiness to come through and linger nIcely

This beer poured out as a brownish tone with a white fizzy head on top. The smell of the beer gives off a malty aroma with a light smoked aroma in there too. The taste of the beer has elements of smoke and lagered malts in there. The mouthfeel was pretty good, it's got a lighter body that remains drinkable. Overall this beer was decent, it's not something I'd need to have again but it's not bad.
