Reviewed 4/2/2009 (Tap @ Flying Saucer, Houston, TeXas): Pours a very dark brown colored body, small tan-white head, diminishing. Somewhat coffee effervescent aroma. But very weak. Somehat watery taste, Strong ground coffee taste. Tastes like a coffee - beer. Somewhat carbonated. Some mlk chocolate notes. Nice chocolately aflertaste as it warms up.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pilsner glass. Brown in color with tan head that lingers a bit, leaving decent lacing. Smell is of baker's chocolate and cocoa. There’s not a lot of hop bitterness here. Most of the bitterness comes from roasted grain. This is malty and smooth. There are hints of tea in the dry finish. Solid beer.

1/2" off white head recedes quickly to a cap. Dark brown, chestnut with good clarity in the light.
Mildest coffee aroma. Dusty chocolate aroma. Gritty malt, grain feed store aroma.
Doughy malt flavor. Big grain flavor - like a feed store in a glass. Some mild, smooth chocolate flavor.
Medium body and carbonation. Tasty finish of lightly roasted grains mixed with cocoa.
Good beer, I'll have it again and keep it on the short list....brewed close to home.

Very dark like cola in a clear glass. Smell is chocolate, molasses, brown sugar, toasted bread. Taste is semi sweet chocolate and coffee. Medium mouthfeel. Wow, so good. I’m not a dark beer fan but this is fantastic. I wouldn’t be able to drink a lot of them but when I want a dark beer this is now my go to.

Nabbed a bottle at a Total Wine & More in Austin, TX for $1.79 USD.
"Dunkel beer."
Medium-bodied and supple, emphasizing subtle coffee-like flavour, caramel, malted milk balls, brown bread/bready malts, and chocolate malt. I get a scintilla of cherry towards the finish. I'm not finding any Noble hop flavours or aromatics; some subtle herbal flavour or grassiness would be quite welcome but it's absent.
True to style with plenty of nuance. It's quite filling for its low ABV and drinks more like a bock strength German beer. Rather heavy for the intended style, but still drinkable albeit something of a meal in a glass.
C+ (3.13) / ABOVE AVERAGE

Pour is a chocolate brown, tan head. Aromas are all malt, toffee and caramel, and a spicy yeast note.
Taste has the toffee and caramel, and a spicy, funky yeast that is really nice. Glad I tried this.
