Poured from the bottle into a Dogfish Head signature ale glass. There is no discernible bottling date on this that I can find.
Out of the bottle pours dark and nearly black. Head makes four fingers, chunky, but slightly creamy but with lots of swiss cheese bubble appearances. light and cocoa tan in color, the body matches a dark walnut brown, just getting into black. A real solid looking dark ale, complete with a bit of retention and light brown thin bubbles slowly creeping the sides.
Nose hits with a light whipped milk powder. Airy. Nestle or classic instant powdered Quick breakfast drink. Hints of cola like sweetness. Not too shabby, but gives me the impression this is thin, almost milk stout territory.
Really interesting, but also strangely kind of style blurring. A real milky chocolate sense in feel but it feels more stout like in character. A lactose like sweetness, mixing with a sugary orange bent of hop. Some of that cola like taste is there but with a strange mix of sweetness and odd bitter that doesn't balance so well. Mid palate finishes with a lingering sweet bitterness and light evaporated milk. The sweetness turns to a bit of alcohol forward after some time.
Overall this is really a bit of a style blur, it reminds me if you will, to call this a somewhat sweet slightly hoppy milk stout. Not really my thing, but it's an interesting take, but really doesn't feel like a classic Black Ale, CDA, or whatever you feel like calling it. Drinkable though none the less.

Thanks to 5000 for sending this bottle my way.
The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma features a lot of roasted malt, as well as some heavy pine and resinous hops. The flavor is a little bit different. I get the same roasted malt as in the aroma, but there is also a little bit of chocolate. I also get some pine and orange citrus hops, with a low to medium amount of bitterness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

I opened a 22 ounce bottle and served it in an IPA glass on 6/5/12.
Appearance: Heart of Darkness pours a dark brown with a huge tan head that seemed to last 10 minutes.
Smell: The aroma is of sour bread/grain with citrusy hops.
Taste: Heard of Darkness tastes like a very hoppy porter with pronounced vegetable bitterness at the end.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is smooth and well carbonated but a bit light.
Overall: Heart of Darkness is only OK and, for the style, HUB’s Secession or Firestone Walker’s Wookey Jack are far better.

Definitely looks like a CDA--pours ebony brown with light tan head. Aroma is all about citrusy hops. Kind of overwhelms the roasted malt aromas. For a CDA it actually seems to be lacking a good balance between the dark roast and the bright hops. A little on the tart, citrusy side, it could use some extra malt sweetness and roundness to balance the powerful hops onslaught.

Poured to a standard pint glass at Locol (from notes taken 10/23/11):
A - Poured dark brown with a toasted marshmallow/tan 3/4 finger foamy head, almost pillowy. Strong retention. Shines mahogany in the light. Moderate lacing halfway down the glass.
S - Moderately hoppy citrus on the nose immediately overtaken by strong coffee scent and moderate roastiness of the grains. Hint of vanilla and chocolate cherries.
T - Immediate coffee and chocolate flavor with balanced piney hop flavor. Eases into a moderate pine hop bitterness with citrus undertones. Bitterness lingers augmented by dark roasty bitterness, and a hint of root beery spiciness.
M - Moderate fizzy carbonation, imeediately dry and totally not thirst quenching. Moderate body.
D - Tasty, great flavor with the toastiness and piney hop. not too much chocolate or smokiness. Good balance between the black and the IPA.
Not mind-blowingly superb, but definitely a solid showing!

Half Pint at Alibi Room in Vancouver. From notes.
A - Poured black with one finger of light brown head. Nice thick lace was left with a film of retention.
S - Citrus hops, very roasty and some coffee. Extremely well integrated and inviting.
T - Roasty with coffee as well and citrus hops in the finish. Structured well and not messy like alot of black IPAs can be. Very tasty.
M - Very bitter in the finish with good carbonation and a medium body.
O/D - Nice. Strong and well done. Hops are dominant but play a proper role at the same time. Well blended and easy drinking with no evident alcohol.

This beer was a disaster. If this is a cda then I need someone to tell me where the hops were in this brew. It looks great. Just as it should. Dark and creamy head. When I smelled it I was looking for the rich pungent hops and chocolaty malts. It was not there. I got a scent of something that was hard to recognize. Really disappointed. The taste was just as bad. This did not taste like a cda at all. The mouth feel was average not too sticky and not to dry. Overall this was not that good. I have had cda's at a much lower abv with more hop flavor and scent. The same for the malts. Really wish I drank something else. I did finish it. It was not bad but for the style there are so many better dark beers.

22oz bottle poured into a pint glass.
A: Very dark brown. Touches of light getting through on the edges. One finger tan head with good retention and very nice lacing.
S: Floral hops are very present. With a touch of earthiness. Some malts come through but nothing roasted. Just a little sweetness.
T: Sweet malts upfront, maybe toasted caramel. Then a very earthy floral hop flavor. Not hugely bitter. Finishes very floral.
M: Medium light body. Medium carbonation. Slightly slick and slightly dry.
O: A pretty decent Black IPA/CDA. Nothing standing out against the crowd but very drinkable.

On draught at the Uber Taproom, Heart of Darkness is black with a small light tan head leaving decent lace.
Smell is sweetish, some lime notes from the hops, a little char.
Taste is basically an aggressively hopped porter. Porter first, NW hops second, and ethanol third. Good for a big beer, and while the bitterness is firm, I wish the malt was less dominant than the hop flavor.
Mouthfeel is on the dry side, a nice creaminess, medium-light bodied.
Drinkability is pretty good, a solid beer for sure, very smooth considering the huge strength and flavors, but more impy porter than CDA.

This was a bit of a different experience for me as far as the American Black Ale style goes. Most of what I had previously tended towards the side of big time aroma/flavor hop additions with medium bitterness, resembling a dark IPA. This beer on the other hand took the style in a bit of different direction, heading towards a more hoppy-porter realm. And I liked it. When cold, the bitterness and hop characteristics are subdued, taking a back seat to a nice biscuity, roast chocolate flavor. As the beer warms, the spicy bitterness begins to stand out; spruce tips, pine muddied with a bit of earth and pungent citrus take stage while the porter characteristics take a back seat. A molasses and sorghum flavor remain to let you know you're still drinking a dark beer. A nice one.

22 picked up tonight at Brewforia West... Paid about $7ish... poured into my HotD goblet.
Splotchy dark tan head doesn't stick around too long... leopard spots of foam... the brew is pretty much black...
The nose shows decent citrus and maybe some pine hoppiness, but the dark malts and I swear there may be some coffee beans in the mix are the big players.
Pretty smooth throughout... but definitely leaning toward the dark malts more than the hops... okay citrus in the middle, and maybe some floral notes.. the roasty profile is much bigger than I was expecting and damn big in the emerging style... but I still really dig it... light "dark dried fruits" with warmth show as sweet chrerries ... but the dark malt blast pretty much lays waste to the expected subtleties.
I am listening to music and writing some stuff for work tomorrow, but honestly with my recent sip, I caught myself in my head going, "nom nom nom nom" to the malts... not necessarily a good thing... but memorable. Good.... sorta Great.. but more PNW hops and lesser malt might make me bite a bit more.
