I really love this place. This location is the only Flying Saucer that I've been to and I hope the others are this good. The entire staff is very beer knowledgeable and the selection is way above and beyond. They make it a point to tap some unusual brews and have a cask or firkin tapping about once a month. There is plenty of bar space and a small couch area too. It is a nice, big, open pub room but somehow when I get there with a group of friends it still has the feeling of a smaller pub.
The table servers are great. They have taken care of two parties for me, each with 50ish guests and they keep us happy, full, and with delicious beers in our hands for 4 hours with no mistakes or complaints. One guy asked a server what beer he was drinking because he couldn't remember what he ordered and she smelled it and told him. That's much better than the "um, let me go look at your bar tab" that most places would offer.
Everyone seems pleased with the brats and burgers, but I am here to tell you that the pretzels are to die for. The mustard is super spicy and oh so tasty.
Raglan Road is a distant second, Flying Saucer is the only place to hang on at the Power and Light District.

This is my go-to bar. Love the atmosphere, and people you meet. The bartenders are what make this bar the place to hit in Kansas City. They have over 70 beers on tap, most of which are local, and another 150-200 in the cases from all over the world.
I prefer to sit at the bar, but out at the tables is nice too. The staff really know their beer. They take several beer tests throughout the year to stay up on the current beer they have. It is really rare to find one they don't know about...and if you do, they generally will enjoy the drink with you, so the next time they know about it :)
Food is great there as well. You would expect regular bar food, but it is a cut above that. You can get wonderful salads...but really it's the pretzel. That's what you want to get when you are there :) They are delicious. Try it with a German Sausage and a variety of cheeses. mmmm

So I went down to Kansas City to visit my uncle. I was telling my uncle and aunt all about craft beer and what a whole great new world it could be for them. I had mentioned they had a great beer bar "The Flying Saucer" and both looked at each other and had never heard of it. Fast forward. So after a great brewery tour of Boulevard, they wanted to take me to a new grocery store. As we turn in to park my aunt yells "Hey there is that place you talked of"
Of course we went in. Awesome looking place. We sat down at the bar. I started talking to what i perceive was the bar manager "Matt". I am asking all these questions about beers we can't get in MN, so of course I have to have a schlafly. He gives me a sample and my aunt a sample of the O Fallons smoked porter. He chats with me the entire time. We all only have 1 beer, wish I could have had more. Very cool place. Also, I think I made a craft beer drinker out of my aunt.

Visited KC for a couple nights and spent most of my time in the evenings here. It brought a smile to my face to see approximately 70 taps behind the bar plus another hundred plus bottles. Plus none of the taps were BMC's and only a few import macros occupying space. Some of the beers I enjoyed on tap were Sierra Nevada Southern Harvest, North Coast Old Rasputin, and Rogue Shakespeare Stout.
A couple of nice flat screens tv and a projector so you can catch whatever game is on. Food was mostly bar type food, but what I had was pretty good. Everything was also reasonably price, good happy hour specials, and a nightly "fire sale" beer for $2.75.

I visited this establishment a few times. I love the summertime atmosphere, where the windows are open. Feels like Europe in the summertime. Doesnt' feel like you are confined. The chairs and booths are very comfy, making a great atmosphere. The service is attentive. I didn't really ask too deep of a question to our waitress today, but when I've asked the bartenders in the past, they've always answered my questions in a "respecting beer" format.
Food-today I had the chicken salad, my buddy had the brats, and we shared some pretzels. The food rocks.
Selection-I'm impressed with the tap selection. Like today, we did a "flight" of 5 beers: Arcadia IPA, Avery IPA, Bells 2 hearted, Schrimshaw Pilsner, and Northstart Pilsner. It is great to get those beers on tap.
Highly recommended. I drive well out of my way to visit this great establishment.

This place is a pretty relaxed pub. Great selection to choose from. Got a pint of hopslam here. Amazing. Too many beers to count on tap and a large selection of bottled and imported beers. Kinda empty for a Sunday but still a great place to have a brew. The waitress said they had 6 cases of hopslam in the cooler. Now I know why I couldn't find a case. Overall great place. Would come here all the time. Music is great, has a good crowd, nice specials. I would def reccomend coming here on Wednesday nights for brewery night.

My Girlfriend and I checked out the Flying Saucer in downtown Kansas City, MO during our 4th of July travel this year. This was our first Flying Saucer experience. It's a very nice place with convenient parking in a nearby parking deck. We went at lunch time on a holiday weekend Friday, so there was only a small crowd of people in the place (a mixture of ages and walks of life). We sat at the bar which has a lovely view of all the taps. In moments I wished we had a Flying Saucer in the Atlanta area. I like the fact that you can order a flight of tasters from the taps, nice touch. My Girlfriend was especially blown away by the Goose Island Matilda on draught, her favorite brew. The staff was very knowledgeable of the beer offered. The bar served the beer in the proper glassware and even had two nice glass washing stations, very cool. The food we ordered was quite good and tasted very fresh. If this is a good representative of a Flying Saucer, I would be happy to go to any of them.

We spent last weekend in Kansas City and went to the Flying Saucer three times. As usual, they had a really good beer selection, including Hopslam which I had not tried before. The only down side to the place is that their beer menu is not up-to-date and I didn't even realize Hopslam was on draught until my third visit. They need to do a better job with a "current" listing of beers on tap because their paper printouts are very out of date. Our servers were very knowledgable and helpful, including giving a couple of good tips to my sister who is just starting to venture into craft beer from Miller Lite. The place also has awesome pretzels with a fantastic spicy mustard sauce.

Came down to visit some friends of mine who, or so I recently though, unfortunately live in Kansas. After visiting the Flying Saucer, I began to revise my stance.
This place was flippin sweet. How on earth you take a bunch of disparate breweriana plates and make it look both grandma-ish and modern cool, is beyond me. I suppose it has something to do with the wall of taps? Thats a good start. The exterior looked pretty sweet walking up to the place, you get to the front door and see there is a rollilng up garage door that opens to the outside (sounds dumb, but really pretty damn cool). Lots of space, several couches, long bar, cool place.
The beer menu was large and extensive. Lots of Belgians, Germans, good craft selection. I had a Schlafly Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout, 2007. Hella. Damn. Good. And the rest of my party enjoyed it also. And the wife had a German beer flight (of which there were several). So, again, quality.
Service was quite good, attentive, fun, attractive. :)
The food was pretty dang good too, and everyone else enjoyed their meals. In all, a pretty damn cool place, one I"ll have to revisit if I ever find myself in KC again.

Went through here on a trip to KC for a beer and a snack. Really nice atmosphere, laid back with cool music, walls plastered with beer nerd collectibles. My waitress was very friendly and beer knowledgeable. The waitresses all wore little plaid skirts, if that does it for you (it did for me at least). They had lots of taps and bottles and a lot of good breweries represented.
I had a Mikkeller Chipotle Porter on tap (you know a bar gives a shit about good beer if they go to the trouble of getting a rare Mikkeller on tap) and a Free State Oatmeal Stout, both good. They have a lot of rotating/seasonal taps, including Founders, Bells, Odell, Rogue, Avery, Sierra Nevada, one just for New Belgium Lips of Faith series, and one for Great Divide Yeti series.
They had an awesome bar menu, burgers, brats, etc, but also things like a make your own cheese and meat platter deal with Cotswold cheese as an option (I've never seen Cotswold cheese in a bar before). I had the Rocket Tots (spicy cheese & pepper stuffed tater tots) with habanero sour cream dip, very tasty. They also had a Young's Double Chocolate ice cream float on the menu.
Awesome place, wish there was one nearer to me.
