Just ran into this and for 4 dollars I love these guys seasonals. Out of the bottle it has a burnt orange color. Its hazy and the sediment in the bottle tells me this is either unfiltered or centrifuged. Held up to light you get tons of orangish colors and its not allowing me to see the tv. Looks good. When it comes to the smell I get citrus. Sweet hop citrus. Seems like the crystal hops they dry hopped on were a good choice. Wow the taste is balanced. It tastes like is a bit stronger than 6.5% That's totally the rye. As for the bitterness it does not hit you until the end of the pour but its mild. In regards to the hops, the citrusy smell is not so much in the flavor. This is a very good IPA and for a spring seasonal this is no "session beer" that is lacking flavor. Its a full on balanced yet best of both main ingredients. You get the spicy rye characters and the bitterness you normally get in an IPA. This is a winner if you ask me. The mouthfeel is nothing special or out of the ordinary. Its above average. Its what you would expect from an IPA. No more. No less. One thing it has going for it is its not too carbonated yet there is enough to cleanse the mouth. Great Beer. Check it out. I am totally going to try this again. See what happens when its not so fresh. This is not your normal 4 dollar beer. I would pay 6 for it if I did not know any better.

look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5
Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: medium orange hue with a light haze and a subtle effervescence. Head is a thick finger of frothy ivory foam with a bit of an orange cast. Head retention seems pretty good! I like it.
Smell: sweet malt with plenty of caramel character and a hint of rye spiciness. Hops don't jump out at me but are resiny, if anything, in character. Despite its sweetness, this beer seems nicely balanced to me.
Taste: sweet and caramelly with a spicy, prickly character. This reminds me a bit of a strong ale, but pared back a bit. I like it OK, but really it's a little bit messy.
Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a decent carbonation and somewhat effervescent mouthfeel. Not creamy, but that's not what this style demands, anyway.
Overall: I'm glad I've had this beer, but it doesn't grab my imagination. It just seems a little over-done, maybe. I think rye IPA is a concept that still needs to mature, much like the black IPA. I will probably not reach for another one of these, but if you are interested in the latest developments in the world of rye, this is certainly worth a try.

22oz bottle poured into a large mug. Can't find any dates on the bottle.
Pours slightly cloudy golden color, huge fluffy head, fades slowly, leaves webby lacing. Plenty of carbonation crawling up through the beer. Smell is muted, but pretty. Nice hop profile, floral and spicy.
Taste is rye spicy, honey sweetness, little of the hops that show up in the aroma. A bit too sweet, but not offputting.
Mouthfeel is thick and sticky. Overall, not bad.

Appearance: Pours a clear, deep orange color with a moderate amount of carbonation. About half an inch of head forms which has good retention, and decent lacing.
Smell: A pretty malty smell overall. Caramel and a bit of spicy rye form the backbone. A bit of sticky citrus and resin makes up the hop component.
Taste: Nice caramel malt backbone up front, with some definite rye notes following. The rye imparts a nice bready dryness and spicy notes. The hop character is floral, with citrus and a bit of bitterness.
Mouthfeel/Overall: Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied with nice carbonation. Finish is semi-dry. Overall, I enjoyed this beer. A bit malt heavy for me, but it was well done.

Served from the bottle into a nonic glass
A- Poured a dark sem-hazy amber color with beautiful fluffy and frothy off-white head. Left dense lace all over the glass.
S- Big rich and sweet caramel and toffee, spicy rye and hop character, some orange citrus
T- Lots of rich caramel malt flavor, citric hops, spicy rye notes,
M- Quite smooth and creamy, soft carbonation, finished dry
O- Really good Rye-PA, more balanced with the malt character than others.

22oz from Fred Meyer in N.Salem. $3.69 Pours a nice dark orange( darker then the usual IPA) colour with a good sized creamy off white head. Fresh piney citric hop aromas..some caramel malt but getting no rye. Again the flavour is good piney/pineapple/grapefruit hops with a smooth caramel backbone..there is maybe a good touch of the rye in the end taste. Nice on the tongue smooth yet complex. Nice IPA but not much rye on show

Poured chilled into a fluted tulip.
Pours a nice dark hazy amber color with half inch beige head that recedes leaving light surface layer with moderate lacing.
Smells of sweet tropical fruits. Mainly guava and papaya. Did not get much spice from the rye.
Tastes of tropical fruits and caramel malts. Still not picking up much spice from the rye.
Light to moderate body with sweet but crisp finish and mild aftertaste.
Overall a good IPA but was expecting more of spicy profile form the rye.

The Hop Rye It came from a 22oz bottle into the English Shaker glass. It had a small foam head with very little lacing on the glass. The smell was unique in that I got some interesting notes of butterscotch and molasses. The taste was spicy due to the rye and the hoppiness was not overbearing. It was more on the drier scale than sweet. It left a slight bitterness on the tongue and was soft to the palate. Overall not my favorite rye but not too bad.
