Opaque black in color with a robust body, Northern Brewer hops give subtle earthiness to balance eight types of malts and a creamy chocolate texture from oats and nitrogen.

served on nitro at their missoula taproom, an excellent and straight ahead take on the style, smooth and rich, somewhat oaty and somewhat irish, totally flattered by the nitro pour, nice to see something simple, classic, and so objectively well done from a brewery that isnt a hype factory, appreciate this sort of thing more and more these days. coal black with a matte luster and an inch and a half of cappuccino froth textured tan head, looks awesome and leaves perfect rings to demarcate each sip. nose is dry with a slight yeast element, roasty without being bitter or too intense, but also without a ton of middle malt depth, and slightly ashy and earthy, familiar but highly appealing. the flavor is great too, very dry, great roast to this, an espresso note there but no frills, bready ale yeast in the mix, an almost lagered cleanness for a beer this dark and deep, minerals, perhaps a faint raisin note, but this is all about the dark grain. amazingly creamy and full, suggesting some oats in the mix, and also shockingly fast finishing for a beer so flavorful, dry and gone on the swallow. exceptional attention to detail here, way ahead of expectations. solid beers across the board in here, maybe they deserve a little more attention...

Served on tap in a pint glass
Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown, nearly black color with a one finger head of tan foam. The head fades fast to leave a bit of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma of the brew is big of a roasted malt and coffee smell. Along with these smells comes some notes of molasses and aromas of char and toast.
Taste – The body of the brew is big of a coffee and roasted malt flavor right from the start. The flavor is slightly drier upfront with some notes of chocolate and caramel coming more toward the end of the taste. As the little bit of sweetness joins the tongue, so too does some nuttiness and a little bit of toast. With all the flavor transitions throughout the taste one is left with a drier roasty and toasty taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is rather thick with a carbonation level that is low. For the drier dark taste of the brew the feel is great and allows all the rich flavors to be well appreciated.
Overall – A rather nice toasty and roasty stout. One to try if you get the chance.

6/2018...pours dark brown, tan head of foam. Oaty espresso nose, and on top of that, espresso bean tastes. Milky mouthfeel. Stout base, with a little oat backgrounds.

I had this beer on nitro in a pint glass at the Missoula taproom.
Appearance: black body with a finger of creamy tan foam. Very nice.
Smell: lightly sweet with a nice dry roasty element. A very nice dry stout.
Taste: roasty and smooth with a dash of sweetness. It's almost more porter-ey.
Mouthfeel: medium body with s decent carbonation and creaminess.
Overall: somewhat more of s Porter than a stout, but still not half bad.
