Notes:
Imperial Loakal Red is just what you expect, a bigger, maltier, more intense version of our hoppy, oaky red ale. Coming in at nearly double the abv of regular Loakal Red, this beer retains the essence of the base beer with notes of citrus, vanilla and oak, but brings it all to that next level. Definitely a great one to share with friends.

Poured in to tulip.

A - Dark amber; almost opaque. Two fingers of dirty white head and great lacing.

S - Citrus, caramel, toffee and brown sugar. Very sweet overall nose.

T - A huge bitterness with grapefruit and pine flavours and a massive warming alcohol presence. Sweet caramel and toffee provide balance. The finish is bitter and dry with a warming alcohol presence.

M - Medium, almost full body. Creamy. Light carbonation.

Bottle (2013)

The Bruery
Placentia, CA

A murky dark amber and red with a thick, small-bubbled, tight khaki-colored head. Incredibly sticky--leaves the glass incredibly messy with irregular spiderwebs of bubbly stick.

A very sweet and malty aroma, especially as the beer warms. Sweet, melted caramel pushes up against sharp, stinging citrus notes. There's a bit of an alcohol presence as well, but at 12% ABV, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Some pine. More hop presence as colder temperatures, and significantly more malt as the beer warms.

Very sweet caramel and bready malt flavors combine with pine and bright citrus notes in flavor. Somewhat simple but very tasty and quite drinkable. Some alcohol present.

Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Appropriate.

Very tasty, but probably too "big" for the style.

750 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep red. Big head. Off white foam. Lots of surface foam.

Smell - Hoppy and a bucket of caramel. Musty and citrus hops.

Taste - Really caramelly. Hops come second. Citrus. Kinda reminiscent of a barleywine. Musty and slightly bitter.

Mouthfeel - Heavy. Medium carbonation. Slight bitterness.

Overall - Imperial reds just aren't that exciting. This is very imperial and very unexciting. I can't disagree that it's well made though.
