Nice thick head that leaves a blanket of lace. The liquid dark gold with an orange hue. Appropriately cloudy.

Plenty of "warm" spice aromas, such as cinnamon, nutmeg and black pepper. Notable alcohol.

Very true to the style. The body is chewy and the carbonation high. Lots of alcohol throughout. Lots of Scotch qualities. Plenty of lightly toasted pale ale malts. Oily finish with a long fortified liqueur aftertaste.

Pours clear bright orange with a small white head. Hardly any retention and a little lacing.

Smells exactly like pineapple juice with some added spices and booziness. Maybe some cinnamon, but pineapple overwhelms most of the spice character.

Similar flavors as well. At times I feel like I am drinking pineapple juice. Some lemon, banana, nutmeg and a flavor I can only describe as "Hawaiin sweet bread" are also noted. A little bit of an alcohol bite, but goes down very smooth. Would never guess this is 11.5%

Medium bodied with ample carbonation. An almost tart aftertaste finishing a bit dry.

Bruery Xmas beers have ranged from meh to horrible for me in the past, so I was pleasantly surprised that I enjoyed this one, but then again I do like pineapple juice. Spices are restrained enough that it is drinkable although there isn't a ton of depth or complexity to this one.

Five Golden Rings is a cloudy straw color. It’s very hazy, much more than I would’ve expected. A little light behind it gives it a much brighter gold look. A soft collection of white bubbles gathers on the surface, but dissipates quickly. That’s a bit disappointing, but isn’t too surprising given the alcohol content. Lacing was definitely lighter and spotty. Not bad, but not great.

The nose is pretty good. It’s interesting. It starts out with a mix of spicy and fruity notes. The fruit notes are definitely citric, mostly pineapple. The spicy esters are a product of Belgian yeast. Pepper and clove are the strongest spices. Belgian yeast has a nice presence. Secondary scents include lemon, honey, and light orange. It is rather deep and complex. Alcohol is definitely there, but doesn’t smell like 11.5%. I wouldn’t have guessed it’s that strong.

The flavor is about on par with the nose. It’s very spicy up front. Clove and pepper are by far the strongest, but Belgian yeast has certainly imparted some other spicy notes that I can’t quite identify. It is sweet and fruity. Pineapple is easily noted and has a nice flavor. Better than expected. It works well with the spicy notes. Apple, pear, and lemon are also noted. Honey is a secondary flavor, but it adds nice depth. More depth is added by herbal and earthy flavors. It is complex. Alcohol is strong, but I wouldn’t say it’s boozy or hot. It’s a little warm. That’s all. Finishes fruity and spicy.

The body is on the heavier side of medium. Carbonation is very light and soft. It has a smooth feel. Goes down surprisingly easy for such a big beer, too.

I honestly had pretty low expectations for Five Golden Rings. The description of it did not sound very good. Much to my surprise, it’s pretty good stuff. I’d be interested to see how this develops over the next few years. But, if you’re curious, it’s well worth cracking open now.

750ml bottle, a very cool idea for a decade-plus spanning release series. Muchas gracias to DoktorZee for schlepping this back from SoCal for me.

This beer pours a hazy, solid medium golden amber hue, with three fingers of foamy, puffy off-white head, which leaves some broad, random specks of spattered lace around the glass as it evenly subsides.

It smells of dense, meaty Belgian yeast, black pepper, coriander, clove, nutmeg, and yes, yes, yes - musty, fruity, sugary pineapple! The taste is sweet, sugary pale malt, a touch of caramel, some rather encompassing, yet softly caring, and generally funk-free earthy yeast, reserved clove and allspice, um, spice, and a nicely integrated tropical pineapple fruitiness, sugary in its own special way. All very pleasant, to be sure, but that only distracts from the increasingly salient fact of - where be the booze, Balthazar?

The bubbles are agreeably tame, yet supportive in their finely fizzy way, the body a sure heavyweight, something I really don't encounter all that much, and not just for the style (and especially for the style), and smooth enough, the effect of the fruit, spice, and alcohol all having their say. It finishes definitely on the sweet side of things - malt, pineapple-dominant fruit, and seductive spice all contributing equally.

One large and in charge BSPA - it may be (sort of) pale, but honey, this ain't light. There's a thorough heaviness to all herein, a gravitas that, along with the pineapple, abounds in an 'Aloha from Hawaii' sensibility. Pretty balanced, given the big sugary inputs, and still crazily understated, with the 23 points of alcohol proof drawing little overt attention to itself.

It's spicy, it's floral, it's vinous. It sounds a lot like I'm describing a wine. ...oh, by the way: it tastes wine-like too. The Bruery's fifth installment of a twelve-year series is chocked full of fruity-spicy balances that is normally relegated to the lexicon of grape- not grain.

But here we are, and the beer pours much like those oak-aged chardonnay. It's strong golden body is highlighted with mild haze and ample bubbles. Rising to the surface, the beer is partly spritzy and partly frothy, giving the ale a part-beer, part-wine appearance. Broken lace adorns the glass and starts to remind us that we are, in fact, drinking ale.

Honey-sweetened malts kick things off while cracker-like malts contribute to the beer's initial aromas. Floral notes of orange blossom, clove, and allspice captivate the nose with soft and spicy potpourri. Lightly sulfury character says apples, while acidic tones say lemons. Tropical fruits round out the aromatic show with aromas now found in American IPA (but, we'll see about that bitterness).

Deliciously spiced, the malt flavor is straight forward with honey, thin caramel, and dry bread and biscuit. But the beer's malty foundation is dwarfed by the spice and fruit to come. Apricots, pineapple, banana, and apple all seem to be of the dehydrated (concentrated) fruit sweetness. But as the sweetness quivers, the spicy additions come to play- cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clove, and white pepper balance the fruit and malt with ease and carry its taste to a spicy, oaked chardonnay-type woodsiness and slight cork-like must.

Medium in body, the Belgian strong pale ale is creamy and tart to start. But soon after its high effervescence subsides, so does its residual malt textures. What's left is fruit impressions without the weight and an echo of spice that's supported by alcoholic warmth. The beer is light and effortless in its finish, while seemingly vinous tannic with white wine-like properties.

I'm seeing how this beer is built for the future. Though relatively fresh, all of the individual tastes, aromas, and nuances are easily deconstructed. But as the beer develops over years, the tastes will certainly meld the malt, fruit, and spice into a fusion of all while retaining a dry honey taste that should reveal high level of savory succulence for years and years to come.

Split a 750 ml poured into a duvel glass

A: pours a hazy golden orange with a whips of white head, a film remains around the outer ring of the glass through out... Not much lacing to speak of. It's not a bad looking beer, but the lack of head and lacing lowered the score here.

S: In the aroma I Mainly get bready yeast notes, along with some notes from the spices, I mainly get cinnamon, and nutmeg? (Turns out they used allspice, cinnamon and ginger) as the brew warms I deffinatly start to get more of the spice, particuarly the ginger, as I get vague whiffs that remind me of ginger bread men. There is a bit of sweetness in the aroma as well, although note as much as I anticipated, and while I get citrus I'd be hard pressed to say that I smelt pinneapple persay. Nice comes x-mas time aroma overall.

T: much like the nose, I get some bready yeast notes, along with a bit of sweet citrus, pinneapple comes through more towards the finish, along with the spices, I like the use of spices here, they blend nicley with the yeast notes and seem to balance them out.

M: medium body with moderate carbonation that works very nicley with the brew, keeping it from being syrupy, some lingering x-mas spice in the aftertaste.

O: this is a pretty good x-mas beer, I thought it was tasty and pretty nicley balanced and had a decent drinkability for the abv, defiantly worth enjoying for the holidays, I'm curious as to how this will age.

A: cloudy equal parts golden and amber body with a single finger head which has little retention or lacing.

S: red apple, pineapple and other tropical fruits, belgium yeast, clove. overall the fruits dominate.

T: the booze is fairly well hidden. molasses, red apple, tropical fruits, belgian yeast, clove and other miscellaneous herbs, lemon, tartness and peppercorn.

M: thick and syrupy with moderate to high carbonation and a semi dry finish. I actually like the texture here although it is different for the style.

Overall: I like the balance of sweetness and tartness. the mouthfeel is very tick with this one coating the palate quite a bit. Nice beer though and good seasonal one.

Served in a Mundelein Craft Beer Festival shaker pint glass.

Memories of Eddie Izzard come flowing back to me here... This stuff pours a hazy amber-gold (how appropriate) topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises white grapes, mango, orange sherbet, light banana, and light maple syrup. The taste holds notes of white wine (I got the sense of oaked chardonnay here, though this particular specificity seemed particular to me this evening), pineapple, honey, light Belgian yeast, and very light clove. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda syrupy feel. Overall, a surprisingly tasty brew. Frankly, when I read the label, I was sure this was gonna be a substantial mess, but the ingredients worked very well together, a sign that cooperation amongst disparate and seemingly inevitably clashing views can indeed coexist peacefully and productively.

750ML bottle poured into a Gulden Draak tulip glass

Appearance- Truely a hazy golden color with about a half finger of small white bubbly head. It dissipates to apmost nothing and leaves no lacing.

Smell- Tons of clove, cinnamon and other heavy spice notes. Also, lots of fruit and big pineapple notes.

Taste- Wow, palate explosion. Seriously my paoate almost couldnt handpe the explosion. The front of the tongue is hit will all the big spices and then quickly transitions to sweet fruitty flavors and then with 1 foul swoop is cut down with a sour pineapple and lemon finish.

Mouthfeel- Medium body with nice amiunts of carbonation that pairs well with the flavor profile.

Overall- Pardon my french, but this beer is a kick in the ass to the palate. My downside is that because its so extreme, it is kind of hard to drink. This is probably served best as a 6oz sipper to share with a bunch of friends on a cold winter night.

Center-pour into tulip...

A: hazy medium amber body, finger's worth of ivory head that didn't persist; negligible bits of lace

S: made me think of orchards of pale-fleshed ripe fruits; presumably this is attributable in part to the use of pineapple in the brewing

T: I liked what the pineapple did for the flavor profile - you have a nice complement of pale malt flavors and the fruitiness of the yeasts and hops; the pineapple provides a lush flavor that is suggestive of holiday feasts' and treats' spices and fruits. Citric/acidic notes linger.

M: warming, full, soft, fuzzy; bit of a bite on the aftertaste, a little bitter, peachy sweet

O: I enjoy the sweet strong pale ales like this. This one in particular has a refined but lush character - it is suitable for warming and slow drinking. I'd buy this again. Perfect for winter holidays and cold weather drinking - a great December drink.

A - golden orange with a huge, dense, white head that has great retention

S - lush fruit, funky yeast, faintly spicy

T - fruity, funky, faintly spicy, mildly tart

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is a decent beer. The pineapple didn't come through as much as I would have thought it would, but there is definitely a more forward fruitiness in the flavor. For the most part this was almost all about the yeast for me. It was funky and lent a traditional Belgian spiciness to the flavor. Overall, this was a good beer, but I think there are better ones for this style available. It's definitely worth a try though.

Serving Type - 25.4 oz bottle

Appearance - Golden tan/brown copper with a nice 2 inch foamy, thick head and tons of lacing.

Smell - Sour/bitter belgian yeasts, almost bret like funky sour aroma. Grape, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, herbel spices and a little sugar note.

Taste - Huge pineapple and belgian yeasts at first sip. Really sweet and sour. Warmth of booze comes in soon as the overload of sweet dies down some. Lots of grape, lemon and herbel fruits mixed in with a malt backbone.

Mouthfeel - Tounge gets nailed with the sweet pineapple/bitter sour yeasts. Palate gets more pineapple and yeasts, along with some malts and alcohol. The aftertaste is sour, warm and pienapple flavored.

Overall - You better like pineapple to like this, and like some sourness also. I like this for the fact its different but man, its going to get a chore to drink this whole bottle, im guessing a 2 hour commitment. I would love to try this without the belgian yeasts, and maybe some centenial and cascade hops added to this, the monster pineapple profile this has is just screaming for a insane double ipa. Worth a drink, not my favorite 12 beers of xmas so far, and it seems im not liking them slighty more each year. Theres always next year...

A: A fine, two-finger head sits atop the beer, which is a dense, cloudy gold. The head lingers and leaves fine sheets of lacing that gently slide down into the beer.

S: The advertised pineapple is definitely out front, but it’s accompanied by cloves, black pepper and some citrus notes that promise tartness once it gets into my mouth. Very intriguing.

T: First, this beer is just huge, although not in a bad way; it’s not hot, it’s just huge. The taste is interesting – the traditional strong pale ale elements of cloves and other spices, along with mild tartness and funk, form a sort of foundation but definitely aren’t the end of the story. The pineapple doesn’t quite dominate those flavors, but it definitely gets all over them. I like it, but I suspect that some aging might allow the flavors to mellow and blend a little better.

M: Pretty traditional for the style. Despite the big flavors it stays pretty light in the mouth, although the huge ABV of course can’t be hidden.

D: Often we praise big beers that hide their alcohol well. In this case, however, I think it’s a good thing that the alcohol is so obvious, because otherwise you would be tempted to drink this a little faster than is prudent. You probably will anyway.

Served in a duvel tulip glass from a 750ml bottle ($11.99 at riley's in madison)

Appearance: Pretty standard; cloudy orange with minimal head, reminds me of a saison or other belgian styles.

Smell: The best part, strong pineapple with some clove and yeast.

Taste: Belgian yeast, clove, sweet malt, pineapple (great pineapple taste!) and alcohol spice on the finish. Very pleasant but the alcohol really helps to balance the sweetness of the malts and pineapple.

Mouthfeel: Thick, very thick. Would prefer it slightly thinner with more carbonation, but I'm glad it's thicker rather than less thick.

Overall: I like it. I was apprehensive given the reviews, but I was pleasantly surprised. Reminds me of a good belgian strong pale but with some unique twists, especially the pineapple presence. Will be buying another to age for awhile and see how that makes it.

Opened on Christmas Day

A - Golden colored pour with some active foam that retains. Cloudy look. Some lacing.

S - Clearly can make out fresh pineapple and spice. Smells like a caribbean punch.

T - Flavors of sweet pineapple and cake are dominant. Great cocktail\dessert beer. Sugary sweetness bears out in each sip. Bready notes from the yeast give a pastry cake flavor.

M - Balance is incredible to hold all thi ssweetness and ABV into a smooth drinking ale. The only gripe I can think of is that this is too sweet to have mor than a glass of.

O - Wonderful holiday drink to share among guests. Might be a bit of a novelty but easily a beer for a casual beer drinker to enjoy.

A very aggressive pour yields two plus fingers of mostly larger bubbles which has it simmering down to the surface at an accelerated pace, just off-white and not quite tan in color, has a few decent sheets as you turn the glass but none of the lacing truly sticks. Slight gauziness to the liquid with a very fine sediment floating about, looks like slightly rusty orange to yellow water, only a few fat and lazy bubbles to be seen. The nose is yeasty and clearly on the sour side with obvious pineapple backed up by cherry, white grape fruit and clove to caraway seed spice, tart lemons, witch hazel, white pepper, damp earthiness and ending with a rose petal led floral lift. Just about medium-bodied with an initially fluffy carbonation which tones down swiftly as it passes through the mid-palate. Comes off as almost acidic, has plenty of grip and the pineapple and lemon team up for a mouth puckering tang. Wild yeasts, coriander and cumin spices, and pepper keeps it percolating. Not at all boozy, perhaps all that sourness masks this some. While amped out and stylized, does not push the envelope too far. Could easily pair this with the holiday ham and such.

D: This was one of the more enjoyable Xmas beers from the Bruery. It had an enjoyable holiday scent and taste, with fantastic body. The finish was smooth and the alcohol was well hidden, so it was really easy to drink. Probably best fresh.

Pours a hazy yellow-ish to orange-ish color with an off white head. In the aroma, pineapple citrus and smokey ham. In the taste, well, it tastes of the pineapple rings that came off a ham after it was cooked. A light spice and a medium to lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry pineapple and salty smoke in the aftertaste. It is seriously just like the pineapple off of a cooked ham. Sweet, salty, smokey, and touches of spice.

Pours brilliant clear orange with a finger and a half white head that fades quickly and leaves small patches of lace.

Smells of tart yeast, sweet apples, tropical fruits and a whiff of booze.

Taste follows the nose- funky tart yeast, Granny Smith apples, pineapple, nutmeg, sweet bread, lemons, pepper, slight bannana and a small alcohol bite. Several nice flavors that do well to keep this drinking much smoother than expected for 11.5% abv.

Medium feel with zesty carbonation. Long sweet and funky aftertaste.

Yes this is a sweet beast but I found that the sweetness cuts what would otherwise be some overpowering yeast. Not as pineapple-forward as I was hoping but still pretty good. I'll most likely buy at least one more bottle to enjoy over the holidays.

Pours clear gold with a chill haze and a one inch head of white. A few whisps remain on the surface and elongated dots of lacing for the duration of the glass.

Aromatics lead off with sweet malt, candied apples, pineapple pulp, and sugar-dusted cloves.
Candied fruit and rum follow through.

Medium bodied with a slickish, slightly syrupy mouthfeel.

Booze-laced fruit juice and pineapples start the palate. Rum soaked fruit cake, spice-dusted apples and wine-like boozy fusels step forward.

Finishes very warming, fruity and spicy.

Plenty of pineapple, spice, and booze in this one. It should hold up very well in the cellar.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip- pours a hazy golden yellow/orange color with one finger of bone white head, modest retention and lacing.

Smell is wonderfully tart- some funk, some citrus a bit of hops. Nothing complex, just a plain old good tart smelling golden ale.

Taste is a different story- pineapple juice comes through strong at the beginning and throughout. A slight hop bitterness after the initial pineapple note, which gives way to a slight funky yeast tartness, then back to the pineapple and candi sugar to finish sweet, but by no means sickeningly sweet.

Mouthfeel is very nice and different than usual- I'm ordinarily a big fan of prickly carbonation, especially with belgians, but this one works nicely without the pinpricks. Medium bodied, light carbonation, milky pineapple feel on the tongue. This is a wonderful brew and I felt that way from the first sip. I would recommend buying it if you find it- I plan on obtaining another bottle.
