Notes:
5 Golden Rings is the 5th verse in our ‘12 Days of Christmas’ winter seasonal ale series. The only golden ale in the bunch, we spiced up the natural pause in the classic song with cinnamon, allspice and ginger along with the delicious sweet and tangy flavor of pineapple. The resulting ale is a true holiday treat that can be enjoyed fresh or cellared until 2019, when 12 Drummers Drumming will be released.

A - Pours with one finger of white foam on top of a hazy, golden body. The head settles gently and leaves nice lace on the glass.
S - lots of pineapple, pear, malt, and clove alcohol notes.
T - Pineapple and dense malt up front. Some pear, guava, and clove in the middle. Finishes with syrupy malt, lightly herbal hops, and lingering spicy alcohol.
M - A thick, syrupy body, moderate carbonation, and a sweet finish.
D - Not bad, but it seems like this beer has a lot of potential to improve. The alcohol is spicy, but not quite hot and the malt is just a bit too thick for my taste. The best thing I can say about this is that I am really looking forward to the barrel aged version next year.

A: cloudy equal parts golden and amber body with a single finger head which has little retention or lacing.
S: red apple, pineapple and other tropical fruits, belgium yeast, clove. overall the fruits dominate.
T: the booze is fairly well hidden. molasses, red apple, tropical fruits, belgian yeast, clove and other miscellaneous herbs, lemon, tartness and peppercorn.
M: thick and syrupy with moderate to high carbonation and a semi dry finish. I actually like the texture here although it is different for the style.
Overall: I like the balance of sweetness and tartness. the mouthfeel is very tick with this one coating the palate quite a bit. Nice beer though and good seasonal one.

Serving Type - 25.4 oz bottle
Appearance - Golden tan/brown copper with a nice 2 inch foamy, thick head and tons of lacing.
Smell - Sour/bitter belgian yeasts, almost bret like funky sour aroma. Grape, pineapple, lemon, grapefruit, herbel spices and a little sugar note.
Taste - Huge pineapple and belgian yeasts at first sip. Really sweet and sour. Warmth of booze comes in soon as the overload of sweet dies down some. Lots of grape, lemon and herbel fruits mixed in with a malt backbone.
Mouthfeel - Tounge gets nailed with the sweet pineapple/bitter sour yeasts. Palate gets more pineapple and yeasts, along with some malts and alcohol. The aftertaste is sour, warm and pienapple flavored.
Overall - You better like pineapple to like this, and like some sourness also. I like this for the fact its different but man, its going to get a chore to drink this whole bottle, im guessing a 2 hour commitment. I would love to try this without the belgian yeasts, and maybe some centenial and cascade hops added to this, the monster pineapple profile this has is just screaming for a insane double ipa. Worth a drink, not my favorite 12 beers of xmas so far, and it seems im not liking them slighty more each year. Theres always next year...

750mL bottle from Sprayberry Bottle Shop (Marietta, GA). 10.99. Bottled . Served in a Red Brick snifter.
Pours brilliant clear orange with a finger and a half white head that fades quickly and leaves small patches of lace.
Smells of tart yeast, sweet apples, tropical fruits and a whiff of booze.
Taste follows the nose- funky tart yeast, Granny Smith apples, pineapple, nutmeg, sweet bread, lemons, pepper, slight bannana and a small alcohol bite. Several nice flavors that do well to keep this drinking much smoother than expected for 11.5% abv.
Medium feel with zesty carbonation. Long sweet and funky aftertaste.
Yes this is a sweet beast but I found that the sweetness cuts what would otherwise be some overpowering yeast. Not as pineapple-forward as I was hoping but still pretty good. I'll most likely buy at least one more bottle to enjoy over the holidays.

On tap at Max's yesteerday. The beer pours a bright gold color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is rich and sweet, showcasing considerable tropical fruit (lots of canned peach and maraschino cherry for instance), vanilla, honey and light butter. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but this beer is so sweet, it's almost nauseating. There's a hint of underlying bitterness on the finish, but it's not nearly sufficient to counter and buoy the sweetness in this beer. Mouthfeel is quite full, and the finish is long and cloyingly sweet. Drinkability is dreadful. I was unable to finish even the small sampler glass I purchased.
An interesting beer, but much too sweet IMHO. Cannot imagine what I would do with a full bottle of this stuff.

750ml, winter '12
Lost Abbey Teku glass
A: Pours a deep, hazy golden orange color. Two full fingers of fluffy off white head. Lots of carbonation present initially. Fizzy.
S: Smells like a Belgian golden ale. That noticeable Belgian yeast spicy strain of yeast. Maybe some other spices. Some fruity note possibly coming from the pineapple juice. Nothing mind blowing. Not getting the "cake-like" spices.
T: Up front, you taste that Belgian yeast spice character first. Noticeable. Then you do get some soft creamy malts in the mid palate. Some sweetness for sure, that pineapple juice addition really playing a major role. You get that sweet/tart of pineapple. It's like a boozy fruitcake. Definitely taste a little booze and lingering heat on throat.
M: It's a big medium. It's not overly thick, but it has this strange soft creamy character.

The Beers of California
#32
On-tap at the Bruery
A: Golden orange with a good amount haze, but minimal foam.
S: Mostly grainy with notes of peachy pineapple sweetness and banana peppery spiciness. Alcohol warmth becomes more noticeable as the beer settles.
T: Follows the nose with a grainy breadiness which builds to a peach and apricot fruit sweetness with hints of funk, barnyard, and unpleasant mold. Somewhat leathery ending with a straightforward peppery, banana finish with hints of nutmeg and moderate warming alcohol.
M: Good lacing on the glass with medium body and mouthfeel, but minimal carbonation.
0: The palate feels a bit old and worn. I was hoping for more spice notes. Essentially a Belgian touted as a Christmas ale but lacking in overall spice complexity leaving the holiday spirit out of this brew.

Thanks to jtd1969 for sharing this one.
A - golden orange with a huge, dense, white head that has great retention
S - lush fruit, funky yeast, faintly spicy
T - fruity, funky, faintly spicy, mildly tart
M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated
This is a decent beer. The pineapple didn't come through as much as I would have thought it would, but there is definitely a more forward fruitiness in the flavor. For the most part this was almost all about the yeast for me. It was funky and lent a traditional Belgian spiciness to the flavor. Overall, this was a good beer, but I think there are better ones for this style available. It's definitely worth a try though.

Poured from a bomber into a tulip
A- pours a cloudy golden straw color with orange tints, one finger fizzy head that quickly dissipates down to a nice white covering, spotty lacing on the glass
S- sweet, pineapple and other tropical fruits, maybe mango and papaya, slightly bready malt notes, not much of a belgian smell to it, clove hits at the end, I have to really get my nose in the glass because the smell isn't very strong
T- overwhelmingly sweet, pineapple and the rind, slightly tart, a weird funky (and not in the good sour way) and bitter taste hits the middle of the sip, bready malt...this is a bizzare combination of flavors that doesn't mesh particularly well
M- medium body, light carbonation, slightly chewy, covers the whole palate, slight alcohol burn on the tongue but barely noticable
O- This has probably been my least favorite sampling from the Bruery, it's too sweet and the flavors don't mesh well, Oh and I just noticed I didn't write any notes related to belgians, that's because the characteristics of a belgian pale were practically non-existent, save your money on this one, it costs too much for what you're gonna get

S-tropical fruit, bready malt, spices, herbal notes, hints of sweetness
T-bready malt and grain, pineapple, spices, slightly sugary, some herbal flavors
F-medium body with light to moderate carbonation, smooth and slightly slick
O-an interesting ale with pleasant flavors which I think will improve with some aging

Poured into a tulip glass. A clear gold color with a thin line of bubbles.
Strong alcohol, grassy hop, and sweet, syrupy candy sugar.
More of the same in the flavor. A strong alcohol presence up front with a sweet fruity tang that fades into the finish with a lingering tang and bitterness and sweet alcohol burn. A touch of clove in there also.
Very tart and sweet which dries out the mouth. low carbonation. A lingering burn. Syrupy.
I can see where some people might like this beer, but it wasn't my taste. For me it was a little too sweet, tart, and not enough carbonation.

A-pours a thick urine yellow with a fuzzy white head
S-lots of fruit juice and Belgian yeast and some pineapple coming through.
T- initial pineapple taste with some rice and Belgian yeast. As it warms up it tastes like alcohol and poison.
M- super thick and unpleasant. Lots of carbonation for what it is and boozy. Very hard to drink.
O- this is the worst thing that I have had from the bruery. A below average overpriced beer that I am unfortunate enough to have had. Maybe 7 years will help this beer until then I want to forget ever having this.

Center-pour into tulip...
A: hazy medium amber body, finger's worth of ivory head that didn't persist; negligible bits of lace
S: made me think of orchards of pale-fleshed ripe fruits; presumably this is attributable in part to the use of pineapple in the brewing
T: I liked what the pineapple did for the flavor profile - you have a nice complement of pale malt flavors and the fruitiness of the yeasts and hops; the pineapple provides a lush flavor that is suggestive of holiday feasts' and treats' spices and fruits. Citric/acidic notes linger.
M: warming, full, soft, fuzzy; bit of a bite on the aftertaste, a little bitter, peachy sweet
O: I enjoy the sweet strong pale ales like this. This one in particular has a refined but lush character - it is suitable for warming and slow drinking. I'd buy this again. Perfect for winter holidays and cold weather drinking - a great December drink.

Bottle pour at the BevMo Holiday Beerfest held at Golden Road Brewing in Los Angeles, CA.
Pours a clear orange with a foamy off-white head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, spices, herbs, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a very spice and herb forward flavor on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and sticky mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it's strong and isn't coming together super well at this time.

I keep giving The Bruery's beers a chance, and I continue to be disappointed. Beers brewed by reputable brewers in this style tend to be hard to screw up, so I'm hoping this is better than most of The Bruery's other offerings. Acquired at a local beer store for $10.99. I find their aging recommendations (up to seven years) suspect given the style; I see little need or benefit to age/aging a Belgian golden ale. 750ml brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap and a nicely designed label served into a New Belgium stem-goblet in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. No visible best before/best after/bottled on date.
Served straight from the refrigerator and allowed to warm over the course of consumption. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
Not paired with food. My first and only beer review of the night.
Opened without issue; just a satisfying 'ksh' as the cap came off; no liquid upsurging or other problems.
A: Pours a two finger beige colour milky head of surprisingly nice milky cream, decent thickness, and good retention considering the high ABV. Lacing isn't real sticky or impressive, but it's decent. Body colour is a murky dull orange-copper. Nontransparent but non-opaque. No yeast particles are visible (at least not this high up in the pour). No bubble show. A predictable but generally pleasant appearance. There's noting special or unique about it, but the head does due nicely in terms of retention at this ABV; I'd say it lasted a good minute.
Sm: I get pineapple juice, a cidery mucky apple note, a hint of brett, caramel green apple spice, biscuit malt, rosemary, a bit of ginger, maybe grapefruit esters, and biscuity yeast. I'd say pineapple is dominant, but the spice is a runner-up. Not as fresh as you'd expect a pineapple aroma to be, but it never crosses the fermentation line into tepache-esque (if you'll excuse the pretension implicit in that phrasing). An average strength but interesting aroma. I don't know that I've ever experienced a Belgian golden ale aroma so littered with pineapple, but I'm not sure that's necessarily a good thing. Impressively, no alcohol is detectable in the aroma.
T: Dominant pineapple gives way to a spicy and biscuity body. Brett and a bit of green apple bit on the climax, followed by a torrent of pineapply sweetness - bleh on the finish. Too sweet. There's a hint of tartness buried in the bretty/somewhat lactic notes, which I like and want more of but it never comes. The early second act is a bit lacking in flavour, which compromises the structural balance. I don't get any boozy alcohol or heat; ABV is well hidden. The sticky sweetness is a turn-off though; I don't know that the pineapple focus is doing this beer (or this style) any favors. The spicing isn't all that original, nor is it all that evocative in the flavour. The spices get buried beneath the overbearing sweetness, destroying the beer's potential for subtlety as well as its balance. Where is the crystal malt foundation and delicate subtlety I expect in a good Belgian golden ale? It's sorely missed. Not as yeasty as I hoped; hints of biscuity yeast here and there but little spicy quality. Poorly layered. Hopping is floral but indistinct and adds little.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Sticky. Chewy. A bit overcarbonated. Too thick and filling for the style and lack of flavours. The texture is ill-matched to the flavours. Far too heavy on the palate. Again, crystal malt would give it the light tingly mouthfeel it needs (see Russian River Damnation for an excellent example of the proper way to do this style).
On the burp, I get that nasty pineapple sweetness. Blech.
Dr: I'll finish this bottle over the course of the next hour, but I'm not all that enthusiastic to do it. That said, it does hide its ABV quite well. I think it's getting a bit better as it warms slightly. Still, it's a subpar attempt at the style - and a pricey one at that. I wouldn't bother with this again, and I'd caution friends from picking it up. Another expensive major disappointment from The Bruery.

Split a 750 ml poured into a duvel glass
A: pours a hazy golden orange with a whips of white head, a film remains around the outer ring of the glass through out... Not much lacing to speak of. It's not a bad looking beer, but the lack of head and lacing lowered the score here.
S: In the aroma I Mainly get bready yeast notes, along with some notes from the spices, I mainly get cinnamon, and nutmeg? (Turns out they used allspice, cinnamon and ginger) as the brew warms I deffinatly start to get more of the spice, particuarly the ginger, as I get vague whiffs that remind me of ginger bread men. There is a bit of sweetness in the aroma as well, although note as much as I anticipated, and while I get citrus I'd be hard pressed to say that I smelt pinneapple persay. Nice comes x-mas time aroma overall.
T: much like the nose, I get some bready yeast notes, along with a bit of sweet citrus, pinneapple comes through more towards the finish, along with the spices, I like the use of spices here, they blend nicley with the yeast notes and seem to balance them out.
M: medium body with moderate carbonation that works very nicley with the brew, keeping it from being syrupy, some lingering x-mas spice in the aftertaste.
O: this is a pretty good x-mas beer, I thought it was tasty and pretty nicley balanced and had a decent drinkability for the abv, defiantly worth enjoying for the holidays, I'm curious as to how this will age.

First impression, wow that is different. Typical Bruery, going wild.
Appearance - nothing special, golden copper Belgian looking ale. Crystal clear and almost watered down looking.
Smell - First smell brought forth bell peppers, sweetness, and a lot of citrus fruit and a little funk.
Taste - Very complex within the first couple sips. Hit hard up front with creamy breadiness transitioning quickly to yeast funk and finishing off with blast of tart fruit. Fruit being pineapple, grapefruit, and lemon. Rind / pine bitterness extremely strong in the after taste. My mouth began to taste like a Cabernet after taking some time in between sips. The more I drank the more the grapefruit and booziness took over. The more I drank the more I noticed the funk and fruit mixing in an unpleasant way. I like the first sip much better than the last. The booze was not balanced as well as hoped.
Mouthfeel - creamy and acidic
Overall - Excited and then disappointed. As mentioned the first sip seemed very rich and creamy with a punch of tart citrus at the end. Very unique. The complexity became messy half way into the beer. Even though they always swing for the fences I like the experimentation the Bruery continues to put forth. Unfortunately this was like Jose Canseco when he played in Texas.
Additional Comments - After finishing the bottle I decided to lower my rating. I reread the description of a Belgian Strong Ale and decided this did not fit the description or at least was not "well-balanced" at all. The more and more drank the more I thought cough syrup and was reminded of my mother shoveling it down my throat when I was sick as a young lad. At least the first sip was good.

Pours a brilliantly gleaming gold with amazing clarity. A 3/4" top of virgin white head on it, really makes for one looker of a beer. Aroma was massively boozy. Like huge. Some spice accoutrement, nutmeg, ginger, coriander, clove.
Taste, egad man, did I just drink gasoline? This is the hottest beer I've ever drank from the Bruery, and I've had some of their 19.5% stuff. Difference here, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of malt heft into this one, it looks like it has a rather mellow and light body from the color. I really could not, no matter how much I tried, get into this beer to taste any secondary aspects of the beer, it was just fire in the mouth of an alcohol burn. If you restrain yourself, you can pick up light orange peel and sweet notes.
Of any of their beers meant to be drank years from now, this one really did leave the impression that I don't want to touch it for a long time. I'll adjust my score upon subsequent tastings, but the first one just came off as fire water and not much else.

A: Golden Yellow, mostly clear, with a white head. Slightly darker than most of this style I've seen. Not by much.
S: Alcohol, pineapple, yeast.
T: I was excited to try my first Bruery beer, but the taste was a little off putting. Spicy, peppery, the alcohol was straight upfront, and the sweetness of the pineapple was also upfront where it clashed with the alcohol and reminded me of cough syrup. I feel like if the ABV wasn't so high, this might have been way better, but I fought through the half a snifter I poured myself over an hour. Other than that, it is a typical Pale Strong Ale. Not my favorite style.
M: It felt a little syrupy to me. Probably because of how it reminded me of cough syrup.
O: Like I said before, I was excited to try something from this brewery, but maybe I picked the wrong beer. It may be good in 7 years when they finally complete the collection and it's had a chance to mellow out, but right now it's straight alcohol and pineapple syrup. Not pleasant. Sorry Bruery.

Pours an almost clear, golden color with a small-medium white head that disappears quickly. Scent is a little tropical...the pineapple is definitely there, but in a "hard-to-explain-way". Some strange spices that I haven't really ever smelled in Bruery beers before. They call this a Belgian Strong Pale Ale...but when I think of Belgian Strong Pale Ale...I think of Duvel. This is nothing like Duvel, and I doubt The Bruery wanted it to be. However, had they made this seem more like Duvel...I would rate it much higher. Scent is very sweet...very fruity. A little overly sweet. Could be due to the high ABV. Taste is overly sweet as well, and a bit too boozy. I have never tasted PiaPT or 2TD fresh, but 3FH and 4CB were much better fresh. This one is just a bit unbalanced and overly sweet right now. The tropical fruit flavors are disappointingly overcome by booze and sugary sweetness. Mouthfeel is tangy and hot. Drinkability is fair...as long as you take your time with it. Overall, I had much higher expectations from my favorite brewery. Not a great offering from them IMO.

A: poured a translucent golden yellow in color with pale yellow highlights and a nice finger of bubbly head that left some good lacing sticking to the glass.
S: The aroma was pretty big on herbs, with some spice, citrus, a little pineapple fruit and a little grain coming through as well.
T: the pineapple fruit was more apparent on the palate alongside herbal notes, spices, some citrusy, a little sweet from the malts and a touch of grain flavor on the backend.
M: the brew was medium in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a sweet, mild fruity, spice, herbal, slightly grainy and crispy finish.
O: pretty good beer I have to say but honestly not my cup of tea. If you like spices and herbed beer this is definitely for you.

1612th Review on BA
Draft to Snifter
@TheBruery
App- A very buttery looking golden color with a good bit of shimmering highlights around the edges. A small off white head was there and then feel to only a couple dots of cling around the glass.
Smell- A good amount of aromatics on this one, but didnt do it for me. It was too buttery. Howevery, the pineapple and deeper citrus aroma filled the nostrils. The spices were leaning towards nutmeg note. A bit more alive than the others in the series.
Taste- For a spiced golden it was good. Wasnt as good as the other in the series like the aromatics, but the flavor with the different fruits is quite nice. A bit more golden vs dark and spicy as the others but it seems to work. Still young, but flavorful.
Mouth- A bit of a solid medium body with a similar carbonation level. A bit thick and spicy. The residual citrus and nutmeg are nice, but just need to develop a bit more IMO.
Drink- I think the idea is there and this will develop nicely. Solid beer that has potential to age nicely.

On-tap at The Bruery,
A: Pours goldenrod with a small cap of white head. Good head retention, some lace.
S: Pineapple, estery malt, ginger, sugar cane.
T: Sweet sugar cane, bready malt and pineapple. The pineapple flavour is quite good, but the overall malt taste is fairly cloying. Still a good taste overall.
M: Full-bodied, soft carbonation, cloying at times; this beer really needs a couple years to dry out.
O: A solid effort, but not as good as the last 3 fresh. Age this one for sure.
