Purchased from A&W Wine Merchants in Redwood City, CA. Brought back to Sydney and shared with @LaitueGonflable.

Pours a reddish, burnt ochre colour, quite cloudy and opaque. Head forms as an incredibly fine but incredibly voluminous majestic crown of yellowish off-white. Minimal lacing, but the body is exceptionally thick and silky. Really, it looks quite amazing, especially for a beer of this ABV.

Smell is deep, and boozy, and to be honest, not much else. There are hints of the oak, but it's hidden behind the almost vaporous boozy headiness coming off it. Some mild, slightly funky fruitiness, and a dusty or polleny character on the back. It's good, but it's unapologetically coarse and large.

Taste is also in that vein, with a big boozy astringency throughout almost the entire palate from start to finish, almost burning the throat as it goes down. There's fragrant sweetness all over it, but in some senses it's missing all the sweetness it needs, instead, you get the medicinal booziness with no substance. I can't help but feel that it's pointlessly large, and without real merit.

Feel is tight and silky, but pummelled with that pointless alcohol astringency on the back.

Overall...? I mean, it's an impressive beer. There's no getting away from its raw power. But it's also stupid. It's a beer that shouldn't really exist. You need something to warrant this high an alcohol content. And this just doesn't have it.

Reviewing the Cuir from The Bruery. I reviewed the 100% barred aged version of this at the end of last year.
Score: 79

2011 vintage bottle with bottle number 16598. Served in a wine glass and enjoyed on 03/31/12 with my good friends Adam Kaplan and Bryan Hernandez in the elegant W Hotel in River North.

Appearance: Pours a deep and hazy amber color that fades from a deep mahogany at the top to a reddish amber color at the bottom. Two fingers of creamy tan head at pour settles to a decently thick later. Amazing lacing, superior retention. 4.5/5

Smell: Barnyard funkiness and caramel. There's a sweet grape flavor that Hernandez described as "Sherry-like." I am not a wine connoisseur, but he is, so I'll take his word for it. There is barley malt, dried apricot and a light blackberry fruitiness as well. I detect a hint of rose pedal, but no one else seems to agree. There is a light alcohol heat in the nose, and it grows as the beer approaches room temperature. For all the complex nuance to the nose, though, you really have to fight through the funkiness in the aroma to detect it. 3.5/5

Taste: Sweet caramel and funky malt throughout. The alcohol is decently hidden at first. The funk seems to subside a little as the beer layers, but as it warms it gets less balanced and more boozy. Bitter barley and banana yeast on the midpalate. Some dried fruit and apricot in addition to modest berry notes. The fortified wine/grape from the nose is in the flavor too. Bitter barley finish and linger with a warming effect on the palate. The funkiness is really detracting. 3/5

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, medium carbonation. There is too much carbonation for how acidic and malty this beer is. Acidic finish. 2.5/5

Overall: Complex, but marred by a funkiness that overshadows the better qualities of this beer. It gets less balanced as it warms, and is too carbonated for how acidic and malty Cuir is. I do not like to throw the infected label around very often, but I did not see any other reviews that described the funkiness experienced with this beer. Maybe we just got a bad bottle. I have had the 100% Cuir before and it, in addition to tasting divine, tasted quite dissimilar to this (with a much heavier mouthfeel). I could not finish my glass once this beer hit room temperature.

Recommendation: This beer gets re-released every year, with a slightly different blend of base beers, with a new title. The 2012 version is called Fruet. I'd recommend waiting for a bottle of that, which will be easier to get, instead of seeking this one out.

Pairings: A nutty white cheese like Gruyere.

Cost: $20 for a 750 ml bottle.

Poured from a 750mL bottle into a BrewDog cervoise glass. Bottled 04189. Anno 2011. From notes. Reviewed 9 July 2011.

A: Huge head. Very opaque. Brown with red hints. Good lacing. Impressive appearance.

S: STRONG. But sort of meh. Some brandy; a bit tart.

T: Fruit! Huge and immensely fruity -- peach? dates? grape. Malty-magnificent and quite sweet. Crazy strong/flavorful and very good.

M: So sweet...robust, but not great.

O: A really good beer. Super-strong, but super-recommended. Would like to have again.

Poured into a snifter. Bottle number 12,729. Thickest wax I've ever encountered. It was at least 1/8 of an inch thick in most places.

4.5 A: Dark brown color. Just under two fingers of beige creamy/foamy hybrid head. Retention is very good given the massive ABV. Short ring of lacing left.

3.5 S: The nose is shockingly tame and well intergrated. Light fruity and earthy bourbon. Big hit of brown sugar. Raisin, date, and caramel. Very little booze.

3.5 T: The bourbon and booze come out more in the taste. Leathery, oaky, vanilla, melon, and a big spiciness. Big caramel and brown sugar from the malt. Fig, rum soaked raisin, and date. A bit boozy, but not 14.5% boozy with warming throughout. Lightly astringent aftertaste.

3.5 M: Heavy body. Good moderate carbonation to style. Chewy with a light creaminess.

3.0 D: Definitely more mellow than Coton and perhaps a bit too mellow. Either way, it's tasty enough. Sweet, but not as sweet as I was expecting (which is usually a good thing).

A - Pours a super cloudy brown color with a touch of red mixed in with a finger of frothy brownish head. The head fades down fairly quick leaving behind some light lace.

S - Aroma is sweet dark fruit with lots of raisin and plum, Bourbon with some oak and vanilla, rich sweet caramel, and some booze.

T - Starts off with some sweet raisin and plum with some Bourbon and oak warming things up. Through the middle, some strong vanilla notes come through with some booze, dark caramel sweetness, and some fig and earthiness. The finish is a mix of strong Bourbon notes, sweet dark fruits, and a good amount of booze.

M - Full bodied with mild carbonation. Feels smooth with a big warming and sweet finish.

D - Very drinkable. Really big and bold with lots of sweetness, but it avoids being cloying. The Bourbon element is also very nice.

750 ml waxed bottle, # 04494. Served in a mini tasting snifter. Thanks to danielnovak3 for the share.

A: Pours a solid plum color with some light brown mixed in for good measure. A thin white film is left after a heft pour and it recedes quickly a slight ring.

S: The smell is of sweet grapes, dark figs, dark malts and a very earthy and nutty scent.

T: The taste is much of the same. Nice fruity and grape sweetness with a more dark figgy flavor as well. This combines with a walnut like nuttiness and some earthy leather.

M: Slightly heavier bodied with mild carbonation. A residual sweetness is left on the palate.

O: This was good, but it doesn't even hold a candle to the BBA version. Having this just makes me want to go have the BA version again....

A - small tan head caps the brownish red liquid. looks similar to root beer.

S - The aroma is enticing and varied. Notes of oak and leather jump out of the glass. Some diacetyl (butterscotch) is detected but isn't offensive. sweet banana bread and dried fruit notes round out the nose.

T - the flavors are quite rich. Lots of dried fruit coming through, mostly figs. there is a bit of alcohol present which lends a rum soaked raisin characteristic. hints of diacetyl on the palate. Long finish.

M - medium bodied. medium carbonation on the higher side.

O - a smooth sipper. perfect for cold weather. slightly cloying but not overwhelming.

2011 Anniversary 14.5%abv. 75% ale, 25% aged in burbon barrels. Bottle #04782. Wax coated neck.

A: Murky caramel apple pour with a creamy grain colored head that was a finger tall and showed good restraint. Dark coloring in the vessel shows some lace stickage.

S: Boozy burbon laced raisins and plums. Strong show of alcohol, 14.%% worthy but not overpowering.

T: The flavor is strong and boozy of burbon alcohol, sweet sugary dark fruit, plums, figs and sugary raisins with some good barrel woodiness coming through. Spicy cardamon, licorice, sweet fennel and woodsy cypress with a warm sweet Belgian yeast fruitiness. Some trace elements of citrus, curaco orange and Belgian candy sweetness. A bit acidic with some flashes of sweet toffee.

M: Milky malty body, soft carbonation with a warm and spicy feel on the inner cheeks. Alcohol is tolerable.

O: Overall complex, sweet, dark and fruity with a spicy good show of alcohol. A great sipper even warm the alcohol is very manageable. I tackled this alone, but probably should of shared the bomber.

Tulip glass.

A: Pours dark, brownish amber, excellent clarity, with a half finger of beige foam, with some largish bubbles. Quite good retention and a little lacing. The ring persists for the entire glass.

S: Starts off with vanilla and cream, along with loads of fruity and caramel malt, dried fruit (blackcurrant, plum, cherry), a little sweet, some alcohol burn, leather, and oak.

T: Malt and fruit (plum, dark fruit), light toast/smoke, earthiness, some tannic astringency, and finishes with some acidity.

M: Medium body and very light carbonation which doesn't get in the way. Very nice. Warms as it goes down, but not much alcohol taste.

O: Very good example of an old ale, with lots of complexity. This makes me want to try the 100% BA version, because I think bringing out the barrel character (mostly muted here) would be an improvement.

On tap at the Good Life - Massapequa, NY

A - Pours light brown. No visivlbe carbonation, no lcaing. Settles fast into a snifter.

S - Scents of candied fruit, brown sugar, and toffee. A hint of booze is noted in the scent, though not overpowering.

T - This tasted to me exactly like a tawny port. Flavors of dried fruit, caramel, and nuts, give way to a reserved warmy burn of booze. It is a mellowing flavor.

M - Obviously a sipper, this is mellow and if you take your time, is very smooth. The balance makes it quite enjoyable.

O - I found this a great alternative to a cordial, or dessert wine. If treated as such it makes for a great beer.

Presentation: Waxed and capped 750 mL bottle poured into a couple of Sierra Nevada tulips and shared with a friend. Picked up a couple bottles over the border in Massachusetts for $22 a piece. Served at just below cellar temperature.

Appearance: Dark caramel brown in color with a one finger beige head. Decent retention.

Aroma: The ABV is really well blended in the beer and does not come off as too heavy at all. Caramel and molasses notes come off and lend a nice sweetness. Dark fruits, a hint of cocoa powder, and hazelnut notes all blend nicely.

Taste: Nice rounded sweetness of caramel and molasses upfront with hints of bourbon and vanilla. Lots of dark fruit, hazelnut, and a touch of cocoa powder. On the verge, but stays away from being cloyingly sweet. A really nice, complex and surprisingly balanced sipper.

Mouthfeel: Medium to full bodied with a nice hint of carbonation. Really nice.

Overall, a really nice and balanced old ale. Plenty of complexity with bourbon and vanilla undertones. The price tag is a bit over the top, but this was definitely a welcome treat and nicely balanced at this age for the ABV. I am laying the other bottle down to see how this evolves.

Poured at The Good Life in Massapequa Park. Reddish brown hues and zero head. Aromas are anise, caramel, and spice. Flavors are in line, with an immense sweetness that tickles the palate all the way through. Anise really takes the lead, and each sip finishes dry. Medium mouthfeel, low carbonation. There are two things missing entirely: bitterness and alcohol (at least in flavor).

I sipped on this throughout the course of my meal (before, during, and after), which turned out to be a good tactic. This is a really gorgeous beer.

Poured into a Founders snifter at cellar temp. The bottle is just cool enough for the outside to fog when touched.

A - Dark reddish brown with a thick white head.

S - Sweet licorice. Some spices and the slightest amount of oak. It smells good, but nothing exciting. Too much sweetness.

T - Sweetness throughout. Not an immense amount as I see in some reviews, but it is sweet from start to finish. Burnt caramel/toffee and dark fruit. I think the licorice in the aroma I was getting is actually raisin. Dry, oak finish. Somehow it is noticeably dry and noticeably sweet at the same time. I actually like how the dryness plays against the sweetness. Not much, if any, booze evident.

M - Somewhat thick. I actually find it to be in line for the style. Not sure if it could get better. I think it will feel thicker in time if carbonation dies.

O - It is good, but I can't say that I'd order more than on serving at a bar....assuming the serving were 8oz or less. I do believe the aging potential here is great. I guess I'll snag more for the cellar.

Bottle # 00370.

Pours a murky dark brown with a 1 inch foamy tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form randomly around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, dark fruits, caramel/toffee, vanilla, oak/wood, and some bourbon aromas. Taste is of dark and slightly sour fruits, burnt toffee, vanilla, and oak/wood. There are also some leather and tobacco flavors that come out more as the beer warms. There is a noticeable alcohol warming in the back of the throat with each sip. This beer has a light level of carbonation with a slightly thick mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer but not as good as I was expecting it to be. I definitely enjoyed the aromas coming off this one more than any of the flavors.

Outstanding...great way to start Superbowl tasting.

A - Burnt orange, a bit cloudy, very rich look.

S - Bourbon, Alcohol, Citrus...exactly what it is suposed to smell like.

T - rich, deep, bourbon, carmel, citrus, complex

M- full, coating, a little heat compliments and cuts through the full rich mouth feel.

O - A winner, not for the faint at heart. Deep, complex, a great sipper. Lots going on. Happy to have a couple standing up at 56 degrees.

Will try to find a few more.

one of my favorites this year, and im really glad i let it sit for 3 or 4 months, heard it was very hot fresh, i didnt think so at all.

beautiful dark amber, rust color. great head and retension for such a strong ale. smells and tastes of caramel, figs, dark fruits, leather.
didnt notice much bourbon, this is an aged beer, thought there should be more. sweet and smooth, insane drinkability for almost 15% abv, i breezed thru this bomber like nobodys business.

only drawback is the price $22 the most ive paid so far ($11 per 12 oz) for a beer. would i do it again next year? maybe. hair of the dog adam almost as good, alot cheaper $4 per 12 oz.

A - Dark brown-red color, small amount of pale beige headm fairly cloudy

S - A lot of sweet dark fruit aroma. and has some sour and vinegary notes in the background

T - A lot of malty sweetness with that slight amount of the sour/vinegar funkiness. very little booze flavor was detectable.

M - Heavy body but fairly smooth, pleasant carbonation.

O - enjoyable and very interesting. very heavy and not something I can drink a lot of, but good to split a bottle among a few friends.

Bottle #16919. It was a bit of a struggle to break through the wax, and when I did it made quite a loud noise. Poured into an over sized wine glass at cellar temperature.

A - Dark reddish brown body, very clear but doesn't let a ton of light shine through. One of the better looking heads I've seen. The pour yielded an impressive 3-4 finger high dark khaki head. Very creamy and thick. Swirling creates some amazing bubbling. Huge amount of retention and lacing.

S - Loads of dark fruits. Figs, raisins, and plums. Caramel malts, molasses and rich toffee. This is a very sweet aroma followed by some savory tobacco, leather, and oak notes. Not picking up too many bourbon notes, but you can smell the alcohol.

T - More of the aroma. Dark caramelized fruits lead into some rich malty notes. This is a very delicious old ale. Its not as complex as I was expecting. In fact it seems really well balanced and tame. The high abv is hidden really well. and the bold and rich flavors never come off as cloying or extreme. The mouth feel is a bit on the light side, but the carbonation level is just right. This is a seriously amped up old ale.

O - An incredibly delicious beer. I was almost dreading opening this beer since the alcohol is so high and I was expecting something sickly sweet and rich. Turns out its fantastic. Really well balanced and well made. Cannot wait to try the future versions of this!

Pours a hazy, dark amber-brown with a medium, off-white/tan head. Scent is initially dark fruit forward with a lot of caramel and dark malt with a nice amount of brown sugar. Subtle bourbon notes with vanilla and toffee. Light cherry and oak...smells delicious. Taste is very similar to the aroma...not as much bourbon flavor as I was hoping for. The 100% barrel aged version is an overall better tasting beer, but this one is great too. Very complex and tasty. Mouthfeel is syrupy with a good amount of carbonation for this style. Drinkability is scary high as the huge ABV as it has. Overall, I didn't rate Coton when I drank it, but I'm pretty sure this one is better.

A- Pours a one finger tan head that dissipates to a nice thin layer around the glass, nice lacing, unfiltered, really cloudy, red mohagony color.
S- Huge dark fruit aroma, brown sugar, caramel, alcohol is present, not very balanced in the aroma.
T- Wow, unusual tartness comes out, huge fruity notes, plums, raisins, cherries, toffee, caramel, buttery taste, sweet brown sugar, incredibly rich, a little too rich, not very balanced, alcohol is present in the taste as well.
M- Medium/Big mouth feel, decent carbonation, sticky finish, smooth drinking, heat as it goes down.
O- Interesting beer, the BA version is phenomenal, the regular version is too rich for my liking, glad to try it once but have no interest in revisiting this one.

Picked this up as part of my New Years Eve celebration, but it ended up being too big to even think of cracking... so it will keep me company for the first night of 2012 instead...

A: Hazy mahoghany or cherry wood brown... a good finger plus of thick head topping it all.

S + T: Some darker, sweet fruits come through first on the nose (plum or raisin), complemented with a pretty notable woodiness... lots of oak and a good whiff of the vanilla that comes with that. Some big toffee or ever-so-slightly burnt brown sugar, accompanied by some alcohol spiciness.

M + D: A huge bodied beer, big and thick and sticky. A nice little bite of carbonation keeps it from being a sticky mess. Alcohol warmth is very apparent... and it adds a nice touch to each sip.

Pours a clear deep ruby/mahogany with lots of deep tan head from the initial pour. Head dissipates quickly leaving just a little to linger on.

Aroma is sweet with light bourbon and wood, caramel, toffee, brown sugar, and a little raisin-like fruitiness. Light alcohol heat.

Upfront taste is sweet toffee mixed with bourbon and some raisin-like fruit sweetness. Bourbon is more prominent in the finish. Woody flavor. Noticeable alcohol.

Medium to full bodied with light carbonation. Syrupy but a clean, slightly bubbly finish. Alcohol heat at the finish.

A very enjoyable sipper with a nice bourbon presence.

A - pours with one finger of light tan head on top of a clear, deep amber body. The head settles at a moderate pace and leaves decent lace.

S - a spicy aroma of plums, sandalwood, leather, smoke and anise.

T - sweet caramel and brown sugar up front with a distinct, fruity note of plum. Cherry and oak in the middle with some more dark fruit character. The beer finishes with more oak, some vanilla and a smoky cherry note that lingers with a slightly warming alcohol.

M - a thick, syrupy body, moderately high carbonation, and a sweet finish.

D complex and enjoyable, this beer is even bigger than I expected. While it was nice, I couldn't help but think about the statement in the bottle that suggested cellaring the beer for up to 20 years; not only does that seem reasonable now that I've tasted it, but I expect that it could actually improve for 15 years if given the chance.

3 finger offwhite head with some lacing on a clear amber with brown and red hues body. Aroma is very unique; woody, almost like A1-sauce like with smokey and almost soapy aroma. Flavor is very sweet with a subtle hickory/mesquite flavor. Boozy as would be expected for anything barrel aged. Body is medium but syrupy with light to moderate carbonation. This overall is a heavy beer. The sweetness is a little much. Fruitier then I expected for a barrel aged beer of any kind.
