Pours a cloudy golden sunset orange with a fine finger of foam that dissipates quickly leaving little traces of any lace. The nose is sweet bready malts, a touch of vanilla toffee along with slight grassy herbal notes and a kiss of hidden citrus. The taste brings nice, rich bready malts, a slightly dry caramel taste, red fruits and wildflowers. The mouthfeel brings refreshing carbonation that paired well with sausage and potato salad, thr oak is barely present though the light tannins do add balance.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a golden color with a white head. The aroma has a lot going on. I get some oak and vanilla notes, as well as some biscuit malt and a little bit of grass. The flavor is more complex. I still get the oak and vanilla notes from the barrel aging, but they are complimented by some biscuit malt and grass and earth from the hops. There is also a good bit of alcohol. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Bottle (2011)

Thanks for the gift, NoSignsOfPain!

(Aged for 1+ year)

Dark, clear yellow with a thin off-white head that leaves dots of lace down the glass.

Sweet grains and breads make up most of the aroma, along with a bit of vanilla and a very mild wood presence.

The sweet malt and grains make up the largest flavor component, with a bit of vanilla and honey complementing things. There's definitely some alcohol harshness throughout, even after the aging.

Medium bodied with moderate/high carbonation, though it's a bit prickly and not entirely pleasant.

Decent enough, but unspectacular. One of the few average beers from The Bruery.

Appearance: Pours a cloudy honey color with a frothy head that leaves some streaks behind

Smell: Malty and oaky, with a faint grassy and herbal character

Taste: Opens with toffee malt that adds an oaky element before merging with the herbal and grassy flavors at mid-palate; a touch boozy, after the swallow, with a nice flavor merge into the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation

Overall: Though I am not a fan of Maibocks, I found that the oak and herbal elements made this beer rather intriguing

Thanks, Madirish76, for the opportunity

A - Pours a cloudy golden-orange with a big frothy finger of white head. The head fades down at a normal pace leaving behind some nice lacing.

S - Aroma is a mix of oak, with some malty and grain sweetness, citrus and floral hop, lemon zest, and a bit of booze.

T - Starts off with a mix of oak with some sweet malts and grains and some light fruit notes. Through the middle, some floral and citrus hop flavor comes through with some bitterness and corn. The finish is a mix of oak, sweet bready malts, light fruit notes, floral hops, and some booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Feels smooth with a warming and malty finish.

D - Very drinkable. Very much an Imperial version of the style, and the oak goes nicely with the beer. The malt and other flavors are nicely balanced.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Clear, brassy golden color with less than one finger of white foam head that collapses to a nearly-continuous residue. Light lacing remains on the glass.

S: Mid-range grain is metered in intensity. The smell has a tangy edge to it that suggests sourness, or possibly something metallic. Oak is strong although occluded by other early qualities. Spirit is suggested, but not truly boozy.

T: Begins off-dry, with refined toasty malt and moderate latent acidity. Unaffected and fairly fresh oak is distinctive throughout--even defining--while spirit qualities are de-emphasized. Malt becomes more soft and bready toward the finish where bitterness is slight.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, soft on the palate but acidic at times, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This bock is about as-expected: similar in many ways to Rogue John John Dead Guy but more refined. It sips effortlessly enough, but also provides fuel for the argument that more reverent applications can be found for oak barrels.

Pours dark gold with a slight soapy head.

Aroma is caramel malt, hints of dark fruit, and alcohol heat.

Taste is bready caramel malt and hints of brown sugar up front. Generous dry oak and vanilla. Mild plum and raisin dark fruit sweetness. Finishes surprisingly hot. Lingering orange peel bitterness.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied.

Overall a pleasant malt bomb. Alcohol comes on strong in this one, but I don't mind exsessive alcohol presence.

Poured a nice clean amber with a light white head..

The smell was light and oaky, a touch sweet and bready.

The flavor is good, but a bit mild, sweet and oaky with a light vanilla touch. Very bready and malt centric.

Has a nice dry oaky mouthfeel.

Good, but not great and a bit non descript.

Bottle sitting in the frig for a while now, time to try this one.

A: Pours into a Bruery tulip. Hazy, slightly yellowish orange with an initial 1" with a chunky head which fades to the edges. Some clumpy lacing is present at first but vanishes along with the head.

N: A dominantly oaky blast up front followed quickly by malty/yeasty notes and eventually the floral and citrus hops bring up the rear.

T: Lots of oak aging evident here. Bready yeast and grainy malts combine well with a nice hop finish. Somewhat like liquid bread. The tannins impart a bright profile without the acidic undertones. Some spice notes either from the oak or hops. Very hearty brew.

M: Medium body. Carbonation seems prickly but is most likely an effect of the oak aging and malts. Some alcohol heat is present as it warms. Bitter and very dry finish.

O: Complex and well done. The semi-sweetness of the malts is balanced by the oak and hops. Nicely refreshing transition from winter to summer = spring is just a couple of days away. Prost!

Well, I wanted to keep this beer until May. But then it became March, and I forgot which month was which, and the bottle was suddenly open. So here we go.

Poured into a snifter, the brew's the color of peach skin, very cloudy. A little lighter and clearer at the edges. One inch of bubbly off-white head thins down to a fuzzy top layer, but there’s not much lace.

A blend of alcohol, apricot, some green apple and a surprising floral note. The oak is vinous and green, imparting a brightness that’s almost tart. Some sweet burnt sugar and alcohol.

Less sweetness in the flavor, and it’s pretty bland until the swallow. Very light apple and biscuits in the front. The swallow delivers deeper yeast notes, like not-yet done-baking bread. Apple cider is in there, as is the oaky character that’s become a little less green and a little more toasty. Nice bits of vanilla and toffee can be picked up.

The body’s soft, but a little watery and insubstantial. Soft, massaging carbonation breaks the brew into a little fizz. The finish is clean, and the alcohol is impressively unnoticeable.

A tasty maibock overall. It could maybe use a little more oak, but it’s got a nice, clean flavor.

Sampled August 2011
A steady pour into my large Tripel Karmeliet tulip glass produces a four finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a rich, bright amber color that shows a mostly clear, orange tinged, copper hue. The aroma smells of toasted whole grain, concentrated pale malt sweetness that is almost more rich than sweet smelling, some toasted oak notes, hints of butterscotch and vanillin and just a big, toasty, cracker / biscuit like malt character; this last seems to get bigger as the beer warms up.

The beer is somewhat sweet, but the malt sweetness has a savory character to it and isn’t all that cloying. The finish has some bitterness to it as well as a sharp astringent oakiness; this last really lingers. The malt sweetness combines with the oak character to almost form an orange like note, but I really think some of the buttery notes from the oak are accentuating this suggestion of a flavor. The oak character plays a big role here with a substantial woodiness that is both spicy and quite woody. This has some almost heat to it in the finish, some of it is alcohol, but much of it is really from the spicy wood notes.

An interesting beer, the oak has likely improved this over the base beer, though it does not seem to have been an incredible beer from the beginning. Still, it is enjoyable.

Appearance: orange-copper with a large off-white head that quickly fatdes

Smell: Toasted bred and yeast, a bit of caramel malt. Not much else, I am not getting any oak.

Taste: Malty-yeasty-caramel mix, perhaps some weird corn notes? Touch of vanilla and a bit boozy. Not much going on here.

Mouthfeel: A bit thin but good carbonation

Overall: Good to see they retired this one.

On tap at The Bruery Provisions in Orange, CA.

Pours a hazy golden color with an off-white head that settles to a film on the top of the beer. No lace on this one. Smell is of oranges and other citrus fruits and some nice oak aromas. Taste is the same but better with very nice citrus and wood flavors that work together very well. This beer has a good carbonation level with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer that I enjoyed very much. The combination of the citrus and wood is very well done in my opinion.
