Notes:
Our spin on an American-style barley wine, and we we say "our spin", we mean it's super hoppy. Dry hopped with Simcoe, Centennial and Sterling hops, a real piney and citrusy flavor shines through the dark, caramelly malt backbone. Some may think of it as more of a double IPA than a barley wine, we just think its delicious.

Shared with rudzud of course.
Big honkin head, 2+ fingers, fluffy thick and good retention, tons of soapy thick lacing completely covers the glass, dark molasses brown color with foggy faint garnet light sneaking through.
Nose is essentially a black ipa, lots of pine, light citrus and pineapple, earthy spicy hops, resinous musty dank simcoe. Then malts, dark malts dark caramel and hint if black malt, etc. Light creamy darkness, and faint cocoa almost.
Taste starts with malts, coffee and roast, caramel, dark almost powdered cocoa, creamy at the same time, and hint of char. Hops come on strong, slight earthy spicy hops, then pineapple again, slight resinous musty simcoe, hint citrus and orange peel, etc. Bitter rind like flavor that detracts slightly, and bitterness is huge. Pretty much a black ipa. Finish is quite bitter borderline astringent, spicy earthy long lingering hops, creamy dark malts, light roast and powdered cocoa like lingering. Barely any booze.
Mouth is nice, creamy, nice fluffy carb, hint of booze but not close to 10%.
Overall interesting beer, more like double black ipa than a barleywine, 5 minutes after the last sip I still feel like I'm chewing on hops. Not quite my fav style blend of roast dark malts etc and pine pineapple and citrus, etc, so this didn't strike a chord with me, esp for being a barleywine... however, for a double black IPA taking into account it's not my fav style, this was still a decent beer. I wonder how the aging will effect the hops in this.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a half-pint chalice.
A: Hazy, dark amber color with over one finger of light beige foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.
S: Intense orange citrus hops up front, with a metallic edge. Husky grain is revealed after the hops crest. No alcohol is detected.
T: Begins very off-dry, with hop aromatics that are spicy and earthy. Acidity is high into the middle where crystal malt is dense but not dynamic. The finish is slightly roasty, with some juicy orange citrus revealed at times. Bitterness is rather restrained, while the volatile whiff of alcohol seems to gain momentum as the beer warms.
M: Thin to medium viscosity, acidic and warming on the palate, with moderate carbonation.
D/O: This barleywine seems simplistic, with a potentially appealing malt bill that frequently seems hidden behind hops of underwhelming quality. It is bland in its unofficial role as imperial IPA, and it also seems hobbled as a barleywine.
