The Bruery tulip

A: Hazy deep orange/amber color. Three fingers of fluffy really off white leading to tan head. Marshmallow like head. Lots of good bottle carbonation. Sticky lacing sheets.

S: Lots of piney earthy hops on the notes. Some sweet malty backbone is there. Some nuttiness. Caramel. Toffee. And a really clean wood note, much like label describes.

T: Nice hit of pine bitterness right up front on the tongue. Very earthy on the hop bill. The malts really are the star here, as they should be in a red ale. Sweet, nutty and delicious. Really think the roundness of this brew is from the percentage aged in oak and bottle conditioning. Just really solid. Finish is dry with lingering pine and sweetness from malts.

M: Medium bodied. Round mouthfeel from oak addition.

A: poured into a nonic pint glass to a light reddish brown topped by a dense and rocky two and a half finger cream colored head that is slow to fade. leaves some lacing but not a lot
S: smells of earthy hops, vanilla and some caramel
T: tastes of caramel, vanilla, oak, herbal hops, brown sugar and some citrusy hop. swallow is more earthy and citrusy hops with some caramel and oak
M: medium in the mouth with soft and adequate carbonation. finish is slightly dry but also a bit refreshing
O: looks good, smells good, tastes great and drinks easy. A very good beer with good flavors and solid balance

Poured into a standard tulip glass.

Appearance: (4)
Pours a murky, clouded amber/brown with red highlights. A thick, massive 3 finger tan head quickly forms and last quite a while before settling to about a finger and half. Absolute curtains of lacing adheres to the sides of the glass as the head recedes.

Aroma: (4.25)
Juicy, fruit forward hops burst from the glass; grapefruit, peach and light apricot. The hops also have a very pungent, dank earthy quality to them; big notes of pine and faint garlic. Underneath the fruity, pine-y hops there is a sweet, bready malt backbone and a distinct woodsy presence.

Taste: (4.25)
Succulent, citrus-y hops upfront, not unlike the nose; grapefruit, lemon, peach and resinous pine oil. There is a light, somewhat caramel bready malt backbone that greets your palate before the off dry finish. Long, lingering and complex notes of bitter grapefruit peel and pine needles are left intermingling with impressions of sweet bread and vanilla. There is a light tannin presence in the back end.

Mouthfeel: (4)
Full bodied and somewhat robust with moderate carbonation.

Overall: (4.25)
The Bruery does another unique take on a common style. The 25% oak aged beer that is blended into the fresh beer really accentuates the natural pine characteristics of the centennial and summit hops that were used in this ale. This is quite the juicy and complex red ale. The Bruery did it again, highly recommended.

750ml capped bottle into Torst stemware. Shared with schen9303.

Pours a massive 4 finger foamy light cream colored head with decent retention. Beer is a clear, dark amber tea color. Lacing is thick, stringy and spotty with good stick. Solid.

Nose is citrus, amber tree sap, pine, and sweet cane sugar. Aromatic and pretty enticing.

Opens citrus and pine. Some sap hop bitterness with juicy fruit notes in the middle. Bark and resin bitterness at the end. Finishes big malt presence with a dry, tea bitter aftertaste. Pretty good.

Light bodied with ample carbonation. Prickly and aggressive in the mouth and goes down foamy and dry. Finishes clean with a slightly lingering, sappy aftertaste. Great for the style.

A surprisingly decent offering from the Bruery. Not too much is trying to be done here and as a result, the nose is aromatic, the flavor has good balance, and the feel is spot on. Worth trying.

750mL bottle poured into a snifter. Thanks again for sharing Matt!

(A)- Pours a cloudy mahogany reddish brown color. Produced some good white froth and lacing.

(S)- A sweet yet malty profile. Subtle fig and apricot fruits meets a hoppy bitterness.

(T)- Nice amber malt meets an almost candied fig-like sweetness. Plenty of bitter pine on the finish.

(M)- A good carbonation level. Very malty and sweet with that candied-like citrus with a hefty hoppiness to it. Its almost like its an american red ale only dessert.

(O)- This strongly reminds me of Bells' This goes to 11 Ale, but this one might have a better balance and a touch less of a massive hop profile.

Poured from a 750ml into my Bruery tulip. Pours out a deep, dark red/orange with about an inch and a half of off-white head. Amazing lacing coats the glass until the end, thick and sticky!

Citrus, caramel, oak and toffee start the smell off very nicely. There is a hint of vanilla near the end.

Citrus and oak start the taste off, I could swear that more than 25% of this is barrel aged. Very fresh oak taste as well. Toffee and grass follow with what tastes like a hint of brown sugar. The finish is grassy with a bit of lemon rind. Very interesting flavors. The mouth is a touch thin and heavily carbonated.

Though I'm not always an amber ale drinker, I was in the mood, and this went above and beyond my expectations. I always expect a lot from The Bruery, and they certainly deliver with this one. Glad they finally shipped it outside of OC!
