Notes:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Dark reddish brown with a frothy beige head.
Oaky and tannic, the nose is a blend of lightly tart and slightly sweet cherries and grapes. It's slightly acetic with a light lactic quality. A dash of vanilla is detectable.
The flavor is sweet and tart with notes of cherries and grapes and a solid malt foundation. There's a nice oak presence, and light tannins are evident, as well as a moderate acetic quality. The sweet and the tart balance each other nicely. A light lactic sourness is evident near the end. Alcohol is undetectable.
This is not among my favorite styles, but this is a great representation of the style. I split the bottle with another person and it went down very easy. Recommended.

1 pint 9.4 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into an EKU 28 stem-snifter in me gaff in high altitude Castle Rock, Colorado. Reviewed live. Expectations are quite high. 7.5% ABV confirmed.
Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.
A: Pours a half finger head of khaki colour, decent cream and thickness, and terrible (<10 second) retention. Colour is a dark caramel. We'll call it mahogany if we're down with pretension. Yeast particles are plainly visible in spite of the beer's lack of transparency. Non-opaque. Appealing, but not typical of the style. Understated but inviting.
Sm: Sour tart fruit; certainly cherries and other bright fruits. Surprisingly clean. Very pleasant and enjoyable. I can't wait to try it. Hints of underlying caramalt. Lacks the depth of many sours, but it is quite appealing. A bit of subtle barnyard funk, but not enough to disturb the dominant sour tartness. An average strength aroma.
T: Lacto-bomb. Tart but not in the fruity sense. Some nice sweet bright fruits, but they don't contribute tartness in and of themselves. Lactose is dominant, to its detriment. Where's the wild yeast/spontaneity? Underlying oak hardly contributes anything. I'm kind of let down, to be honest. Doesn't bring the sourness like I hoped. Balanced but tame. Feels clinically brewed; lacks the wild nature of good Belgian sours. Disappointing, but decently built. No alcohol comes through, but there's plenty of lacto yeast. Not particularly pucker-worthy.
Mf: Smooth and wet. Good carbonation and thickness. Pretty good palate presence.
Dr: Hides its ABV quite well. I like it, but it's $22.00 price tag is rather steep for its relatively disappointing quality. I'd try it aged, but as it is it just isn't the right build for a good beer in the style. None of the sourness or tartness is fruit induced; it's all yeast. A good offering, but highly priced and not satisfactory given my expectations. I'd buy Cuvee des Jacobins Rouge over this.
High B-
As it warms, its simplicity emerges.

750ml bottle into a matching Bruery snifter. The brew appears a darker mahogany color with ruby red clarity through the body when held to the light. A yellowish khaki head about a finger strong appears and fades quick leaving spotty lace on the glass.
The aroma is lemony lactic and funky. Some raw oak and a mild touch of caramel to vanilla melds out towards the back. Some fruity quality is present but not really driving home any of that distinct cherry or vinegar notes typically associated with the style. Not saying thats a bad thing, just unique and enjoyably different.
The flavor includes raw oak blending into mild vanilla sweetness and caramel to toffee grain/barrel presence with a dark tangy fruity alcohol component. A raw quality almost mineral-like mixes with a hint of rusty sourness and herbal hops.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. It overall is not bad and the enjoyable aspects are very enjoyable. By Flanders standards it hits the mark but isnt a standout. Worth trying and despite my gripes and displeasure at some of it's character I am glad I have another bottle or 2 to enjoy with some more age.

Very nice example of the style- beautifully tart with just enough sweetness to give it balance, and a lush fruitiness framed beautifully by the sourness. A very pretty pour, dark brown with a slight plum cast and just a little head, though the carbonation is fine. Tart nose of delicate cherry, red currant, damp earth, and leather. The taste is quite tart, with a bit of slightly spicy sweetness, particularly on the finish. More notes of bright fruit, with tastes of blackberries, raspberries, cherries, and currants. A touch of brown sugar and leather rounds it out. Very smooth and quite a great sipper. Well done!

Had this on tap at the reserve society initiation but decided to review it out of a bottle recently opened at a tasting. Thanks Peter (pmmcallum86) for sharing this!
Poured into CCB snifter.
Pours 1/2 finger of tan head. Fades to a ring and leaves some splattered lace. Color is a murky brown with a ruby hue.
Aroma: sour cherries, oak, horse blanket, and funk. Some leather notes as well. Mouth watering.
Taste: Not as sour as I was expecting from the nose, but more sour than on tap. Pretty tart. Sour cherries, oak, leather, horse blanket. I am really enjoying this. It has a much better taste out of the bottle.
Mouthfeel: Tart with a hint of sourness, and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends relatively clean, a little dry.
Overall, this beer is much better out of the bottle and I think it will continue to get more sour. It is drinkable and I can't wait to see what time does to this beer. Well done.

A cloudy amber brown with some pink highlights. Nice enough foam and plenty of lacing in the wine glass. Modest foam but sudsy on the tongue. Really tart.
Vinegar aroma with a touch of fruit in the nose. The first sip has an appealing hint of sour cherries. Scratchy bitterness fills the rest of the taste. Authentic apparently to the style. Pleasant tangy and spritzy mouthfeel. You could say this is actually close to drinkable.
On tap at Bottleworks in San Diego.

Had this one during the 'We Want The Funk!' tasting that was graciously hosted by beermeX2! Big thanks goes out to beermeX2 for sharing this one with the group! I was lucky enough to get to try the Oude Tart with Sour Cherries awhile back, so let's see how this one compares... Served from bottle into a Mikkeller flute. Poured a reddish brown with a one finger light tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, sour, slight funk, cherry, and fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, cherry, funk, sour, and slight tart. It had a light feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The key difference between this brew and the other was that the cherries aren't nearly as pronounced in this one. This cuts back on the sour/tart aspect of this one a little bit. However this one is still quite enjoyable. The aroma and flavor here are quite well balanced and keep you guessing on what the overwhelming note will be the next time you go in for a sip. Definitely worth trying or getting your hands on.

This was shared at my tasting on May 29, 2010. Thanks Darrell!
I've been wanting to try this beer for a while. I was pretty excited that it showed up at this tasting. Oude Tart appears a brown shade with an average sized head and adequate lacing. The beer has a very pleasant aroma with scents of brettanomyces and a hint of sweetness. This is a very tasty beer, no doubt. There is a slight vinegar edge to the finish that I find to be a tad harsh, though not totally distracting by any means. This is a solid beer and I really look forward to having it again.

Bottle shared by bring. Thank you, Barry.
Hazy reddish-amber body with a finger of slightly off-white head atop. The head settles to a crown, leaving only a small film on top. The nose is sharp and cherry-like, light acetic acid backed by a subtle dark malt foundation. The ripe cherry aroma is pretty awesome. It tastes toasty and sour, balsamic vinegar-like acetic acid at a perfect level. Cherry-like esters are prominent on the palate, though there's not much sweetness; it's a dry, woody and tannic beer, especially in the finish. This exceeded my expectations, one of the better American interpretations of this style.

Pours a hazy deepp amber color with a small off white to no head. In the aroma, a small sour cherry, but somewhat faint. In the taste, raisin, red grape, and cherry fruity sourness. This one is a bit acidic. A small sour bite and medium too lighter bodied mouthfeel, with a dry sour fruit in the aftertaste. Big acidic sourness, fruit a mix of cherry and lots of raisins. It almost was on the cusp of being a sour quad.

This one becomes increasingly murky with each pour, with a reddish brown body and a big clumpy beige head that recedes slowly with small foam spots on the top and some lacing on the sides.
The aroma is brown sugar, tart cherries and hints of funky brett. On top of this is the wood character, definitely some oak.
The taste is more of the tart cherries, seemingly sweeter than the aroma would indicate and, though the brett is present, the finish is sweeter than I was expecting. It's dry, just not as dry as others I've tried.
The mouthfeel is extremely clean and crisp with a pleasant tartness and light funk in the finish.
I think this is an excellent Flanders as it's plenty sweet with the cherries with enough brett to balance it, but not so much as to dominate. Excellent.

I drank this from a 22oz bottle into my Rochefort chalice.
The beer pours a medium brown with ruby red highlights. The head is light tan, rising a finger but is gone pretty quickly. The lacing is light. There are some dark floaties at the bottom.
The aroma is light in strength but has a nice sour vinegar feel. At the end it starts to sting the nose, in a nice way.
The taste is pretty light decent vinegar, a little super sour at the end.
The feel is nice, leaves your pretty dry, very drinkable.
Overall, a pretty nice a oud bruin.

Single finger off white head on a clear red brown and amber body with excellent lacing. Aroma of cola, oak, brown sugar, candied orange, dark fruit including fig raisins and cherry. Flavor is less complex but still very good with mostly sour cherries, some brown sugar and oak notes throughout. Fairly thick and oily body and light carbonation. Simple but good. Seemed a little watery but its hard to critize this one too much.

Thank you, Chris. I'd missed this on tap at the Bruery by a day, so I'm glad I get to enjoy a bottle of this while listening to some Anata.
Despite sitting in my fridge for a few weeks, this beer is a hazy, reddish brown with a dense light brown head. Retention is excellent, but there isn't much lacing (nor does their need to be).
The nose is quite excellent. Tart with a vinegar bite, this is quite vinous with a surprising red wine character along with oak, a little vanilla and some tannins. The vinegar character is moderate, and there's actually quite a bit of cherry pie character, tart, fruity and mildly sweet. The sweetness has some caramel and some sugar to it. The tannins bring to mind seasoned leather
The palate opens with a noticeable red wine vinegar character, with the red wine really dominating. Surprisingly oaky, there's plenty of vanilla and tannins present. Moderately fruity as well, there's sour cherries present, lending both a sweetness and a tartness. The acetic character is moderate, coupling VERY well with the vinous character. Did I mention this was vinous? As mentioned, the sweetness is mostly cherry-like, with some brown sugar. Drying on the finish with a vanilla and tannin character, this is a pleasure on the palate. Medium light in body with moderate carbonation, this beer is very drinkable. I'm looking forward to the next couple of hours as I sip this. While the tannins are quite prominent, it is quite in balance with the rest of the beer, making drinking an entire bottle solo not seem a daunting task.
It's quite an interesting take on the style, very old world in nature. While it doesn't have the breadth of flavors that something like Goudenband has, for the first vintage, this is an exceptionally executed beer. Very well done, Patrick and co!

750 ml bottle poured into a Bruery tulip.
7.5% ABV,
A - Deep ruby highlights show through the rich mahogany beer only when held to light. It's loose warn tusk-colored head has quite a bit of retention considering the acidity that comes from the nose but no real lacing is left behind.
S - Not barnyard-like, but barn like, this woody, rustic aroma has a certain rugged manly earthiness to it while remaining smooth. Sour acidity, damp wood, and toasted amber malt blend with distressed leather jacket for an enticing nose lined with mildly sweet dark candi sugar.
T - While just as complex as the aroma, this beer seems to taste considerably less so, focusing solely on tart acidity. Planks of moisture-starved oak and dried dark fruit enter through undertones of Belgian candi sugar and toast.
M - Despite effervescent, dancing carbonation, this beer's medium body has a smooth feel and light chewiness that finishes out intensely bone dry and considerably more sour than Belgium's red ales. If you want you're eyes to twich, give this a good swish in the mouth.
O - The Bruery Oude Tart is like a Flanders on steroids but they manage to ramp the beer up while hitting the nail right on the head. Completely reminiscent of Monk's Cafe, Rodenbock, etc., this powerhouse of a tart beer is quite an experience to behold.

170th review on BA
on tap at RS party
App- The pour I got was a bit of a murky rough lighter brown. Small little head that settled quickly. A little dot of cling.
Smell- A really healthy dose of cherry and then you pick up some scents of woodiness, a little funk and some more red fruits.
Taste- A small taste of a similar flavor to vinegar with a kick of sour, had more of the red berry flavor and a touch of wood with a bready flavor.
Mouth- A nice beer with a medium body and a nice heafty carbonation level.
Drink- Was very good. Now I know why I was trying to trade for this for so long. I quess I don't have to now. I really enjoyed this beer.

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass at Smoke & Barrel as part of DC Bottle share.
A filmy tan collar head is produced, cloudy and hazy body, with classic reddish brown color. Got a bit of the bottom of the bottle so more sediment I think provided some cloudy character. Looks like a classic Flanders.
Bouquet is also classic smelling too. Light sour yeasty punch, and sharp berries. Mild fruit nose mixing with a mild soft malt and tartness.
Palate hits with a real balanced action. Mild cherries, also some surprising mix of lemon too. A quick sharp tartness on first sips, and a milky texture. Real nicely carbonated without taking anything away from the palate, not gaseous. Tolerable mix of sweet with a lingering really nice coating finish with malt and red berry senses.
Overall real solid and delicious.

Reviewed on 4/19/2010. Bottle. Pours a murky light brown with a reddish tint and a thick tan head. Aroma of sour malt, sour milk, sweet candy. Flavor is quite tart initially with sweetness following and a malty, bready finish. Nice palate, very easy to drink for a sour. Tasty!

750 ml bottle. Served in a tulip, the beer pours a dark reddish/brown color with a half inch off-white head that fizzled away quickly. There's a small amount of lacing. Aroma is nice but seems a little weak to me. The brew smells like tart cherries, red wine, grapes, vinegar and oak. Luckily the taste is stronger than the aroma. It tastes like tart cherries, red grapes, vinegar, oak, lemon, vanilla and also an earthy/leathery flavor. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit slick and has low/moderate carbonation. I think it's a good beer, I enjoyed drinking it. It's a bit pricey at $18.99 a bottle, but I'd probably buy it again at that price.

Thanks to Nick for being my proxy for this. Much appreciated.
Clear mahogany colour with lots of luscious red hues to it. Small, light tan head with a fine structure. Decent head retention for style.
Sour cherry and plum notes with some moderate acetic and lactic tartness. There is a touch of sweetness on the nose as well. Mild funk but this is mostly about a restrained, balanced tartness with the fruit. I also get a hint of spice in the background.
Thin acidity with some earthiness which is interesting. Moderate tartness that suits the style. Some fruit but it isn't as forward as in the aroma. Mild sour plum notes come out again along with berry notes and some vinous notes. I don't get the spice from the aroma but that's okay as well. Improves markedly as it warms.q
Medium-light body with moderately-low carbonation. It seems fine.
I quite like this but it is a very different take on the style from either of Rodenbach Grand Cru or Duchesse de Bourgogne. The fruitiness is unique and it opens up really nicely in the glass as it warms. A very good take on the style.

I think Sean brought this to share, but not really sure.
A - Reddish brown colored beer with a tan head that dissipated to a ring. Minor stick left on the sides.
S - Wood, vanilla, cherries, with a little bit of vinous quality. There's a lot of acetic acid and tart notes here.
T - Cherries, acetic acid, a little bit of lactic acid. There is a little bit of barrel presence and a tannic finish.
M - Medium bodied with active carbonation.
O - Good beer. There's a limit to how much you can really drink of it, but it's still enjoyable and something I'd drink again.

Bottle into a Weyerbacher tulip. Thanks to whoever opened this at CdC.
A: Cloudy persimmon-brown body with a finger of fine tan froth. Ok retention, spotty lace. Nice.
S: Bright and sour, with cherries and acetic acid standing out. Simple, fresh, and pleasant.
T: Acrid, sour (but not in a good way) cherry skin up front, with much better fruit and acidity thereafter. Long, tart finish. Good, not great.
M: Clean medium body, moderate, lively carbonation. Excellent.
O: I really liked the assertive acidity, but the acrid bitterness of the cherry-skin flavor really kept it from being as enjoyable as it could have been. Well worth drinking, but not worth the difficulty of tracking down IMO.
Cheers!
