Notes:
Oude Tart is our take on a Flanders Style red ale. It has won back to back gold medals in that category at the World Beer Cup (2010 & 2012) as well as a gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival in 2010. This sour red ale ages in oak barrels for anywhere from 6 to 18 months before being carefully blended to taste. The resulting beer is pleasantly sour with hints of leather, dark fruit and toasty oak.

Thanks to Jason for this one.
Served around 50º as recommended by the bottle.
Full pour into a Duvel tulip, it generates 2 fingers of light tan foam, the color of foam padding yellowed with age. The head is dense, and lasts about 5 minutes. Random spotty lacing. Hazy reddish chestnut color.
Softly acetic nose, hints at wet barrel staves and some mineral notes. Dark berries... currant, blackberry, tart black cherry flavors, some yogurty lactic character. Full and savory, stimulates the salivary glands like none other. Very nice aftertaste of woody cinnamon spice and oak dryness. Cherry pits and dry fall leaves.
Enjoying this very much, but still have to give top honors to my faves Haandbakk and Oerbier Reserva. Makes a nice pairing with a washed rind cheese.

750ml capped bottle, shared at a small tasting by thebouch01 - after having a few samples of this at GABF (and being a huge lover of the style) i was looking for more.
A - poured with an inch of loose, bubbly and slightly creamy light tan colored foam. the beer is moderately cloudy, and a wonderful deep ruby & black cherry color.
S - cherries, vanilla, and oak supply the sweetness as vinegar, hay, lactic acid add the character.
T - begins with a crisp, slightly vinegary sweetness which brings along with it cherries, vanilla, sweet tart candy, red grapes, oranges, and peaches. oak adds a touch more sweetness and body. lactic acid clings to the back of the tounge. complex and delicious.
M - effervescent, light crispy body. very, very dry finish with lingering fruity sweetness, tart, and vinegar acidity.
D - big fan of this one. refreshing yet slightly abrasive (with deliciousness) at times. would have no problem sipping on a whole bottle of this myself.

Huge thanks to davidsk for giving me the opportunity to try this beer. Poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip glass.
A- Pours a dark, mahogany with ruby hues. Produced two fingers width of off-white head, reduced to a foamy, thick ring throughout consumption. Minor lacing as consumed.
S- Very aromatic. Tons of cherries and a little bit of oak upfront. The background has a nice, light vinegar lactic thing going on...offered some nice depth.
T- Wonderful, smooth cherry flavor upfront. The fruit flavor intensifies and tapers midway through. Finish has a light vinegar flavor with a bit of sharp sourness more akin to wild ales. Pretty complex.
M- As it warmed, the texture became much thicker. Medium bodied with a slight creaminess. Very nice.
D- This was really easy to put down. Great taste and great flavors.
Overall, a different take on a tradition flanders, but still very well done. Most flanders have an intense vinegar acidity, where as the lactic sourness in this beer was more on line with a lot of the american wild ales I have had. Even though it was different, I still loved this beer, just don't expect a huge vinegar presence....highly recommended.

From 01/22/11 notes. Brought to a local tasting.
a - Pours a mahogany brown color with some reddish tint. One inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of sour fruits, most noticeably tart cherries, oak, acidic notes, fruity malts, some funky yeast. Smells awesome.
t - Tastes of sour cherries and other fruit, oak, fruity malts, some vanilla, and some funk. Again, very enjoyable.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Very smooth body, quite easy to drink.
d - I thought this was an awesome flanders; probably the best I've ever had. This is the second best Bruery beer I've had too, only behind Black Tuesday. Would love to get another bottle of this one.

A: Reddish brown with yellow highlights and a bubbly head ring.
S: Nice fruity tart aroma with big oaky vanilla notes and champagne like dryness. Some malt and acidic qualities as well.
T: Darker fruit sour notes comes into play here along with the lighter ones in the nose. I really like the rounded balance of the oak to the fruit in this beer, without too much sweetness.
M: Very carbonated, but it works with whats on the table flavorwise.
A Drinkable beer again from a company that keeps impressing me.

On tap at The Bruery. Pours a very murky, dirty water-looking, reddish brown with a small, off white head that disappears quickly. A ton of fizzy bubbles. Scent is acidic vinegar tart notes with a lot of wood and brett. Cherry really comes through as it warms. Taste is initially tart cherries with red wine vinegar. Followed by dark malt flavors and a HEAVY wood backbone. This is the woodiest flanders style ive ever had. Delicious. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, creamy, and nicely carbed. Drinkability is high. Overall, this beer is very complex and tasty. Glad i came!

Latest batch purchased from The Bruery Provisions. Poured into my Bruery tulip.
A few people have noted carbonation issues, but my bottle was nicely carbonated. Minimal head. Smell is fantastic. Sweet cherries and vinegar on the nose. Acidy. Love it. Taste confirms the nose. It's called "tart" for a reason. This is a fantastic brew. Color is a reddish brown.
Mouthfeel and body is pretty nice. The light amount of carbonation makes it even better..
Oude Tart is pretty famous and it's no wonder why. It's an outstanding beer. Cheers

On-tap at Monks. Philly Beer Week 2010.
A: Dark red-brown body. Almost bordeaux colored. Thin off-white head forms and then quickly recedes. Just the slightest bit of residue left on the glass.
S: Rich, sour cherries. Hearty dose of oak, funk, and general acetic acid notes. Slightly spicy.
T: Delicious. Sour cherries take center stage and are well complimented by oak and its complimentary vanilla and tannic qualities. Leather, red wine, and a bit of earth. Slight vinegar contributions.
M: Medium bodied with gentle, velvety carbonation. Lingering sour finish.
O: A truly wonderful flanders style brew.

Pours a reddish color with a small somewhat orange head.
Aroma is full of tart fruit with some vinegar. A bit more of a malt backbone than I'm used to for this style along with some earthy spiciness.
First flavor is of sour cherries. A little bit of vinegar, but somewhat subdued. The earthiness also peaks in and is a pleasant contrast with the sourness. Some oak is also present.
Somewhat creamy mouthfeel with good carbonation levels.
I really enjoyed this beer. I was surprised the vinegar tones were subdued and complimenting rather than overpowering. Lots of good flavors are packed into this one that go together well along with the nice creamy mouthfeel.

Very dark brown with some red hues on the edges. Active, brown head that fizzles out quickly to a hazy cover.
Acetic sour aromas with an oaky earthiness. Hints of cedar. Some fruit esters, mostly cherry, but they're masked by the vinegar aromas. Very nice nose.
Tart and acetic at first, with flavors of vinegar and sour cherries. The sourness slowly fades, revealing a malt and toasted oak flavor. Leather and some pepper. Finish has a good dose of cab sauv flavors, with lots of tannins.
This is a great beer, one of the best of the styles I've ever had. The Bruery can sometimes be hit or miss, but when they get it right, it's damn close to perfect.

A: Pours a slightly hazy dark red, almost into a purple at the darkest spots, capped by a one finger creme colored head. The head is quick to recede to a thin but solid layer which remains for the duration of the beer.
S: Lots of individual aromas combine to form an amazing composite smell - moderately tart cherries, oakiness, some vinous characteristics and tannins, hints of vanilla and leather.
T: Not as sour as the nose indicates, but extremely enjoyable. Cherries with both sweet and sour characteristics up front, strong oak comes through, along with some grape flavors and a bit more vanilla than the nose. Very balanced, and a good subtle, sweet malt base backs everything up.
M: Good slick mouthfeel provided by carbonation that lies just above medium. Coats the tongue on the way down, leaving you wanting another sip.
D: Very drinkable for a sour, tart enough to be applicable to the style, yet sweet and complex enough to remain interesting for the duration.

Thank to kbutler1 for whipping this out at a weekend tasting. Moly, this is a great drink. Pours a little murky and medicinal, but all is forgiven aromatically when the raspberries and cherries come out. Fantastically pucker-worthy and tart, with a great sipping consistency. Killer stuff, worth the high price.

Cheers, mrbubbler!
Appearance. Pours a hazy amber-brown with 1.5 fingers of thick, light khaki head that doesn't hang out for too long.
Smell. Sour, tart cherries, sweet melon and berries, some old dank wood and just a faint hint of fruity belgian yeast.
Taste. Old wood and sour, light cherry, a little leather and funk. Light on the sweet and some nice tartness. A little bit of red wine in the finish.
Mouthfeel. Medium+ body, medium-low carbonation.
Overall. Very nice brew. Nice complexity, as far as the style goes anyways. Enjoyed more as it warmed ...and the more I drank. Funny how that often happens.

A-dark brown with a maroon tint and a thin tan head
S-really freaking tart smelling. Sweet red fruits. Some vinegar. Strong smelling.
T-comes in with an extremely tart taste of sweet red fruits and vinegar. It's extremely sour. It's a tasty and mouth watering taste that is difficult to put down. Has an after-taste that has more Belgian sugars and grains to it.
M-medium creamy carbonation with a creamy finish
O-this is a pretty complex beer that seems to gets more flavor as it goes down. It's like a delicious dessert. It has a sweetness to it and less acidity than other red Flanders ales, yet still has that taste of vinegar.

Enjoyed on 10.07.12 from a 750ml bottle into a Brasserie D'Achouffe tulip glass.
A: Murky brown and Ruby red with a light tan head. Small head retention and initial 1/4in lacing from a vigorous pour that dissipates quickly.
S: Sour, obviously - grapes, tart cherry, oak, some vanilla. Just a touch of acetic acid.
T & M: Mild acid overall and not very vinegar-y suggesting young grapes. Subdued tart cherry and lemon flavors develop. Soft & subtle on the palette.
O: Very good and more mild than initially thought.

Enjoyed a couple tulip glasses of Oude Tart at The Bruery on Boxing Day. I was quite interested to try this after being aged in wine barrels for eighteen months. 7.5% ABV.
The beer is a red hued brown with a quarter-finger of creamy tan head. Not a lot of head, but the retention was very high, with a solid carpeting of fine bubbles topping the beer throughout my drinking experience. The aroma has a lot of tart cherry to it, lots of tart and musty oak that reminds me of the classic Belgian examples of the style. The flavor also begins with tart cherries and a relatively high sourness for the style. Light levels of acetic acid help to make this an authentic tasting Oud Bruin, along with the lightly musty almost funky oak. Finish is tart with a bit of more acetic flavor and a touch of stye-appropriate diacetyl.
The body is medium with a lightly creamy medium level of carbonation on-tap. The results were nice, but not perfect, as I believe natural bottle conditioning is key to the super creamy smooth carbonation I enjoy in this style. The bottled version's conditioning will make a big difference between whether this turns into a very good beer or a truly excellent beer.
Quite spot-on for a classic Flemish style, fairly handily the most authentic American take on it that I have tasted. Undoubtedly the long eighteen month maturation in oak had great results. Eighteen months ago The Bruery had only just begun brewing, and to have this kind of dedication so early on speaks volumes. This is a very tasty beer as it is, lots of cherry and tartness that appeals to my American sensibilities, but also an impressive version of a classic style.

Tasted at Bruery Reserve Society celebration, poured into wine tasting glass.
A- Very nice brown/red color with nice reddish color around the edge of the glass, nice 1/2-1 finger off white head and nice lacing.
S- Great smells of sour cherries, heavy acidity from the 18 months of wine barrel aging, nice almost leather and oak scents.
T- Heavy cherry flavor with nice acidity that is not over the top, cherries taste almost sweet then overpowered by sour cherries, really nice vinous oaky finish, again with a hint of leather in the finish.
M- Nice amount of carbonation to go along with the acidity, nice medium body beer that is very easy to drink almost didn't notice it had alcohol in it.
D- Seriously delicious, not a huge fan of Flanders style but this is really good and very easy to drink.
This was the first release for 2010 for the Bruery and I was greatly impressed. This was one of the first beers made by Tyler and the Bruery gang and it has been aging in the red wine barrels for 18 months, so far a great start to 2010 with the release of this delicious beer.

I drank this from a 22oz bottle into my Rochefort chalice.
The beer pours a medium brown with ruby red highlights. The head is light tan, rising a finger but is gone pretty quickly. The lacing is light. There are some dark floaties at the bottom.
The aroma is light in strength but has a nice sour vinegar feel. At the end it starts to sting the nose, in a nice way.
The taste is pretty light decent vinegar, a little super sour at the end.
The feel is nice, leaves your pretty dry, very drinkable.
Overall, a pretty nice a oud bruin.

Had this on tap at the reserve society initiation but decided to review it out of a bottle recently opened at a tasting. Thanks Peter (pmmcallum86) for sharing this!
Poured into CCB snifter.
Pours 1/2 finger of tan head. Fades to a ring and leaves some splattered lace. Color is a murky brown with a ruby hue.
Aroma: sour cherries, oak, horse blanket, and funk. Some leather notes as well. Mouth watering.
Taste: Not as sour as I was expecting from the nose, but more sour than on tap. Pretty tart. Sour cherries, oak, leather, horse blanket. I am really enjoying this. It has a much better taste out of the bottle.
Mouthfeel: Tart with a hint of sourness, and smooth. Medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. Ends relatively clean, a little dry.
Overall, this beer is much better out of the bottle and I think it will continue to get more sour. It is drinkable and I can't wait to see what time does to this beer. Well done.

major props to gford217 on this one!
Classic red, but better. I often find rodenbach to have a bit to much sweetness, this red does not have that problem. Dark brownish red, light tan thin head. Aroma of dark berries, sweet oak, lightly acitic hit you right off the bat. The aroma is nice but not overwhelming or too strong. The flavor is balanced between sweet malts and tartness and acidity from the yeast and barrel aging. Flavors of vanilla, light caramel are very clear. Also dark berries plentry of oak and a little leather. Easy to drink thanks to the pleasant carbonation level. Body and tartness match up well. I am so happy to have had this and so sad that it is not a year rounder.

Oude Tart | on-tap | 2010
Glass: Bruery Tulip
Served: June 4, 2010 on-tap at The Bruery
Price: $7.50
A - Pours a dark brown-red with a moderate beige head that lingers for a good while. This beer has good lacing that slowly slides down as the beer sits.
S - Smell is very enticing with notes of cherry, oak, red-wine, vinegar, and a nice tartness. There is also some sweetness to the flavor that can sometimes be eclipsed by the tart and funkiness of this beer.
T - Taste is close to the smell. This beer hit me with a nice cherry/sweet fruit tartness upfront. Along with some vinegar and red-wine flavors. It also has some nice hints of oak. Very tasty. This was my second time having the beer and although the tartness didn't seem to be as strong this time it was still very good.
M - Nice sized body to this beer for the ABV. It as just the right amount of carbonation. Starts out smooth and somewhat sticky in the mouth but ends dry and tart.
D - This is a extremely drinkable beer. Even though it doesn't have the highest ABV it still hit me pretty good because of how drinkable it was. I think The Bruery did a great job with this style and I wish I could have got some bottles of this. I'm very impressed with this beer and want more of it.

5.24, from notes.
Pours a great rubyish brown color with some 1 finger beige foam atop. Fades to a sturdy ring and filmy retention. Some lace.
This is a great beer. More approachable and less bracingly vinegary than most attempts of the style. Great vanilla notes and wet woodiness integrated with the tart cherryness, acetic acid, and wild yeast character. Still enough residual sweetness here as well, not perfectly balanced per se, but not attackingly sour either. Winelike berry flavors are mixed in as well with a little bit of a brown sugar note in the middle.
Low end of medium bodied, perfectly carbonated to a medium level, ABV well hidden. Great beer and perhaps my favorite of the style to date. Incredible that the Bruery is doing such great things this early in their existence.

170th review on BA
on tap at RS party
App- The pour I got was a bit of a murky rough lighter brown. Small little head that settled quickly. A little dot of cling.
Smell- A really healthy dose of cherry and then you pick up some scents of woodiness, a little funk and some more red fruits.
Taste- A small taste of a similar flavor to vinegar with a kick of sour, had more of the red berry flavor and a touch of wood with a bready flavor.
Mouth- A nice beer with a medium body and a nice heafty carbonation level.
Drink- Was very good. Now I know why I was trying to trade for this for so long. I quess I don't have to now. I really enjoyed this beer.
