look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 2.75

Appearance: Dark amber-brown with very little head.

Aroma: Dark fruits, slight caramel, light dark bread smell, tiny bits of black peppers, and some alcohol as well. Overall aroma is light.

Taste: Dark fruits, mostly cherry. Some caramel sweetness and dark bread. Some roasted-ness. Some more Belgian-like characters, maybe it's the yeast. Even some floral hops.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with light carbonation. Feels almost creamy but yet watery at the same time. Finish is sweet with some hops.

Overall: I was really looking forward to this beer, but was disappointed. It's a some-what interesting beer but just felt lacking. It was not worth the money.

Had this on 2013-05-14 in Columbia, PA

A - Almost opaque ruddy brown with a 1.5-finger tan head that fades to 1/4" leaving very little lacing.

S - Dark bread crusts, hint of dark fruit, mild pepper, hop floral/flowery.

T - Dark fruit (black cherry) is much more apparent than in the smell. Pinch of white raisins, mild-moderate roasted malt, sour dough rye bread, some caramel and chocolate, light spice including pepper. Semi-sweet initially but dries nicely. Tastes like a Belgian-style yeast was used. There's some balancing tartness and bitterness pairing with the chocolate-covered dark cherries in the aftertaste.

M - Medium-full body and medium carbonation. Substantial, creamy, clinging-then-drying.

O - I really like this beer. On the surface, it is simply satisfying but has enough variety of flavors to hold my interest.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into Samuel Adams Perfect Pint glass.

Appearance: Dark brown/amber in color with a large brownish-white head that dissipates slowly and leaves behind a thick wall of lace.

Smell: Sweet caramel malt with a slight sour lemon hint. A bit of alcohol sweetness as well. Where's the rye?

Taste: Begins with lots of caramel sweetness that remains throughout. There is a touch of the rye spiciness toward the middle and lingering after the finish, but not enough in my opinion.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with balanced carbonation and a watery, slippery finish.

Overall: This is a pretty good beer, but the rye doesn't seem to come through as much as it should. This actually tastes like a doppelbock with slight rye flavoring. Again, not too bad, but not enough of what I imagine a "rye beer" being.

Poured from tap into snifter at lokal in Miami. Pours a deep murky brown with very little head. Looks almost flat but I can see a bit of carbonation rising. Great belgian yeast aromas...dried fruit and raison. Taste is great. Belgian yeast and raison figgy chocolate. ..almost quad like but finishes with a hint of spicy rye. Really cool brew. Its smooth and just easy to drink. Awesome brew again by the bruery.

Poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a deep, murky brown with a two finger tall, light tan head that dissipates rather quickly leaving spotty lacing.

Aroma: Big spicy, slightly tart smelling rye right away, Belgian candy sugar and plum-like yeast phenols with citrus-y hops around the edges. There is some sweet biscuit-y malt neatly tucked underneath it all. Definitely smells akin to a very rye forward Dubbel.

Taste: Sweet, juicy plum up front, with some biscuit-y Belgian malts right along with it. A very nice, overtly American citric hoppiness builds up to the slightly tart, peppery rye off dry finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium to thin body with a soft, gentile carbonation.

Overall: An interesting take on the Belgian Dubbel style. However, I certainly wish the taste was as Rye forward as the nose belied. I do have to say while the mouthfeel is certainly a bit thin for the style, the beer remains very quaffable and offers just enough depth to intrigue the palate.
