Sour in the Rye pours an interesting amber color. Looks like a collision of garnet and orange. It’s a tad hazy. Backlighting gives it a stronger orange look. Carbonation looks to be somewhat active. It yields a white head that stands nearly two fingers tall. Retention was on the shorter side. It dissipated quickly and left a lighter lacing behind. Looks pretty good.
The nose is good, but is lacking a little in strength. Up front, it does have a mix of earthy, funky, and fruity notes. The funky notes smell subtle. I like that. Earthy and fruity notes are definitely stronger. Fruit scents of cherry and berries smell nice. Oak has a strong presence. It smells really nice with the other elements and adds a lot of character. Vanilla is also noted. Spicy rye also has a nice presence, but has trouble competing for aromatic space. Alcohol is a little noticeable. Not too strong. Smells good. A little more strength (and separation) would improve it a tad.
The flavor is simply excellent! This stuff is delicious. It kicks off with a mix of cherry and berry flavors. It’s a little tart, but isn’t mouth puckering. I like that. It is earthy, a little grainy, and a very little funky. The funk blends well with the fruit notes and complements the flavor nicely. Oak is really the x-factor that drives the flavor. It adds a ton of depth and character and adds a really tasty vanilla flavor in the process. Rye has a much better presence here. It’s stronger and its spiciness works very well with the other flavors. This is a very deep, complex flavor profile. Alcohol is there, but isn’t all that strong. Finishes spicy, fruity, a little funky, and a little tart. Excellent!
The body is medium. Carbonation is active, but feels very soft and smooth. Mouthfeel is really nice. Goes down sinfully easy too. Wow.
Sour in the Rye is very, very impressive beer! It delivers. It’s not too sour, not too funky…just right. It features a rockin’ flavor profile that’s deep and very tasty. Find a bottle. Definitely worth seeking out!

The beer pours an amber orange with syrupy colors and a nice finger-width head of creamy tiny bubbles. The beer’s body is clear and practically crystal clean with just a slight haze from the malt and yeast. The beer’s head leaves a lacing sticky dots and strings. On the nose the beer smells like a light gueuze, with beautiful funk and cherry leather notes and a faint tinge of spice. The smell is not as strong as a gueuze, but it is still beautiful and funky. Leather is definitely the dominant smell in the nose, but it is paired with a sweeter funk and some light spicy rye. On the tongue, the beer tastes funky sweet with a light underlying rye spice and some nice acidity. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet, fruity funk that moves into distinguished leather notes that stick to the tongue and only give light hints of cherry. There is an underlying spice from the rye which is light and bready, but I honestly can’t say if I would have noticed it unless the beer specifically had “Rye” in the name. The funk does hit almost cloying notes as it builds, touching citric lemon and some slight pineapple notes in the start of the taste. The finish is sweet lemon citrus with a touch of leather and then a final burp of spicy rye with a faint touch of bread and chocolate. In the mouth, the beer is medium plus in body with a creamy carbonation and a great citric pucker at the end without the citric bite. This beer feels really nice in the mouth. Overall this beer is a terrific sour with a great mouthfeel that doesn’t bite the hell out of your mouth with acid. This is a very balanced and tasty sour. Try this beer, but share it. It is worth the money.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a La Chouffe tulip.
A- pours a bright copper with a 2" white head. Random small bubbles and narrow trails of lacing remain on the glass.
S- huge cherry notes with some citrus, vinegar, sourdough, and you actually get some spice from the rye.
T- sweet and tart cherries, bread, vinegar not as apparent as in the nose, light oak, not getting much spice from the rye.
M- medium body and carbonation. Nice creamy feel and not real acidic or effervescent which makes it pretty easy to drink.
O- 6/10 sourness. very tasty sour with big cherry notes. Sit was as sour as I thought it would be from the first whiff of the beer, but very smooth. I just wish this beer was about $5 cheaper.
