The color is amber/peach with a big head.

The aroma is very tart and vinous qualities. That hits you first and then citrus and berries. Then there is also a slight bready rye. There’s some funkiness too.

The taste follows with tons of vinegar and citric sourness in the front. The fruits are in there, but are quite hard to pick out. The sourness really does smack you. There’s a good malt rye backbone. There is a Flanders style in there too because it reminds me of a less sweet Cuvee de Jacobin.

There is a super clean finish, which makes it refreshing. It also reminds me of a very sour Berliner weisse because of the drinkability.

This beer is really delicious, but it really did not blow me away as it lacks some complexity. It has issues with its value. I paid $12 for 12 oz. on draft and it’s about the same with $1 per oz. if you buy in the bottle.

Bottle, date unknown.

Appearance: Rusty blonde unfiltered cloudiness with nice carbonation. The small white head that formed quickly fades to the perimeter.

Smell: Sour funkiness to the umpteenth degree. Some Rye spiciness is definitely present, along with some sour apple and pear notes. I'm also picking up some wheat and honey sweetness.

Taste: Pucker up...wow! This beer is just amazing in how you think it's sour at first, but the sourness just continues to crescendo on your palate long after the drink is done, on the back end of your tongue. Definitely getting sour wheat, with a bit of spiciness. The Rye barrel pizazz lasts into the finish and leaves an impression on the tongue along with the sour raunch. The way this beer attacks your tongue is just incredible; the booze is hidden masterfully.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is lively and the body is just right; this is drinkable as hell.

Overall: Haven't been let down by a Bruery sour yet. Not much to dislike about this; and thus, my rating.

I had this on tap at John J Jeffries in lancaster served chilled in a tulip.

The color is peachy with lots of haze and thin white cream cap with fine bead. The smell is very tropical with lactic sour odor and light citrus zest with nice amount of wild yeast esters. The feel is extremely sour almost enamel degrading with a mild sweet accent and medium carbonation with subtle spice and dry finish.

The taste is very lactic acid infused with a saliva starting taste up front with some lemon and greek yogurt like tangy flavors with a slight citurs juiciness and mild grain tinge in the back with interesting spice quality and dry finish. Overall this is a super sour wild beer which is not for the timid - it is pretty easy to drink considering how sour it is though.

750 mL bottle poured into a goblet. No bottle date, but its the old bottles that say "For sale in CA only."

Appearance - Deep orange. Hazy. Nice white head. Chunky floaties.

Smell - Quite malty. A slight acetic acid aroma. Slight aroma of rye, but it's faint. Oak is more prominent.

Taste - More sour than the nose implies. Malty still, but a bit of acetic sourness mixes in. More oak up front and the rye is almost gone.

Mouthfeel - Heavy. Not all that sour. Medium carbonation.

Overall - It's a good beer, but simple. Clean sourness, although it's more acetic than anything else.

Poured into a Saint Somewhere wine-style glass. Back label says 112812 Lot

A- Pours an orangeish amber color with a 1/4 inch beige head that doesn't retain long before subsiding to a bubbly ring around the edge of the glass with a patch of wispy surface foam in the center. Thin semi-resilient lacing cascades down the glass.

S- Medium-high sour smell brings about notes of cherry and mild vinegar. Moderate amount of rye is detected after a few short sharp sniffs.

T- Taste is more sour than the aroma lets on. Acidity is pretty high and overpowers the mild fruit notes. Alcohol is well concealed but still is a sipper due to the intense amount of lactic acid.

M- Very dry with a pucker that's nearing intense. Medium carbonation with a light-to-medium body. From the last pour when the sediment is introduced, the feel becomes more chalky.

O- Just a tad too sour for my taste, although it does remind me of a more fruit-forward sour like a Flanders Red. I also was hoping for more rye in the flavor. Still, quite drinkable and appropriate for the style.

Shared with JLindros, reviewed from notes.

A - Poured into a Kate the Great tulip a murky grayish orange coppery hue with a one finger head that fades to leave a dense blanket and sticky lacing. Another ugly duckling beer!

S - OOhhh yeah. Aromas of faint, dusty wood and light faint rye on the finish. Everything else is just plain juicy. Gummy peach candy, sweet peach jam, skins, malty sweetness, and perhaps, oddly enough, some faint strawberry notes!

T - Taste is super, super sour. Light rye spice, barrel wood notes, sour yeast strains...brettlambicus notes. Light juicy fruit notes. Tasty, tart, juicy peaches and even some more of those strawberry notes.

M - Mouthfeel is super tart and delicious. Very drinkable.

O - Overall, this was a damn good beer, glad I have more of these in the cellar.

750ml into a tulip.

A: Pours a burnt orange/caramel color with a large off-white head.

S: Clean lactic tartness, a bit of lively and fruity acetic acid, some pineapple and mushroom notes from the brett. Lightly sweet rye malt underneath.

T: Sharp yet peasant lactic and acetic sourness (reminiscent of raspberries), a bit of wet hay and musk, caramel and green apple, apricot, grape, mild tannic vanilla.

M: Light-bodied with slightly frothy carbonation. Dry on the end.

O: This is a pretty nice AWA, very fruity despite the lack of fruit. Would definitely drink this again.

Sour in the Rye pours an interesting amber color. Looks like a collision of garnet and orange. It’s a tad hazy. Backlighting gives it a stronger orange look. Carbonation looks to be somewhat active. It yields a white head that stands nearly two fingers tall. Retention was on the shorter side. It dissipated quickly and left a lighter lacing behind. Looks pretty good.

The nose is good, but is lacking a little in strength. Up front, it does have a mix of earthy, funky, and fruity notes. The funky notes smell subtle. I like that. Earthy and fruity notes are definitely stronger. Fruit scents of cherry and berries smell nice. Oak has a strong presence. It smells really nice with the other elements and adds a lot of character. Vanilla is also noted. Spicy rye also has a nice presence, but has trouble competing for aromatic space. Alcohol is a little noticeable. Not too strong. Smells good. A little more strength (and separation) would improve it a tad.

The flavor is simply excellent! This stuff is delicious. It kicks off with a mix of cherry and berry flavors. It’s a little tart, but isn’t mouth puckering. I like that. It is earthy, a little grainy, and a very little funky. The funk blends well with the fruit notes and complements the flavor nicely. Oak is really the x-factor that drives the flavor. It adds a ton of depth and character and adds a really tasty vanilla flavor in the process. Rye has a much better presence here. It’s stronger and its spiciness works very well with the other flavors. This is a very deep, complex flavor profile. Alcohol is there, but isn’t all that strong. Finishes spicy, fruity, a little funky, and a little tart. Excellent!

The body is medium. Carbonation is active, but feels very soft and smooth. Mouthfeel is really nice. Goes down sinfully easy too. Wow.

Sour in the Rye is very, very impressive beer! It delivers. It’s not too sour, not too funky…just right. It features a rockin’ flavor profile that’s deep and very tasty. Find a bottle. Definitely worth seeking out!

The beer pours an amber orange with syrupy colors and a nice finger-width head of creamy tiny bubbles. The beer’s body is clear and practically crystal clean with just a slight haze from the malt and yeast. The beer’s head leaves a lacing sticky dots and strings. On the nose the beer smells like a light gueuze, with beautiful funk and cherry leather notes and a faint tinge of spice. The smell is not as strong as a gueuze, but it is still beautiful and funky. Leather is definitely the dominant smell in the nose, but it is paired with a sweeter funk and some light spicy rye. On the tongue, the beer tastes funky sweet with a light underlying rye spice and some nice acidity. In flavor, the beer begins as sweet, fruity funk that moves into distinguished leather notes that stick to the tongue and only give light hints of cherry. There is an underlying spice from the rye which is light and bready, but I honestly can’t say if I would have noticed it unless the beer specifically had “Rye” in the name. The funk does hit almost cloying notes as it builds, touching citric lemon and some slight pineapple notes in the start of the taste. The finish is sweet lemon citrus with a touch of leather and then a final burp of spicy rye with a faint touch of bread and chocolate. In the mouth, the beer is medium plus in body with a creamy carbonation and a great citric pucker at the end without the citric bite. This beer feels really nice in the mouth. Overall this beer is a terrific sour with a great mouthfeel that doesn’t bite the hell out of your mouth with acid. This is a very balanced and tasty sour. Try this beer, but share it. It is worth the money.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a La Chouffe tulip.

A- pours a bright copper with a 2" white head. Random small bubbles and narrow trails of lacing remain on the glass.

S- huge cherry notes with some citrus, vinegar, sourdough, and you actually get some spice from the rye.

T- sweet and tart cherries, bread, vinegar not as apparent as in the nose, light oak, not getting much spice from the rye.

M- medium body and carbonation. Nice creamy feel and not real acidic or effervescent which makes it pretty easy to drink.

O- 6/10 sourness. very tasty sour with big cherry notes. Sit was as sour as I thought it would be from the first whiff of the beer, but very smooth. I just wish this beer was about $5 cheaper.

Poured into Bruery snifter. Appearance is a reddish orange with nice clarity and significant head upon pour. Head dissipates to a collar and leaves some lacing. The nose is complex and oaky with heavy tart fruit, notes of peach and cherries along with a touch of rye malt on the finish. The taste is super tart from start to finish with nice underlying fruit and oak character. The rye is subtle but adds a nice complexity to the sour profile. Mouthfeel is effervescent with medium body. This is a deliciously sour ale and definitely worth trying.

What a beautiful day for a sour beer: the sun is out, the wind is low, and the temperature is just right. Cheers!

Lot 55, released just a few months before the date of this tasting.

A: Pours a burnt orange, totally translucent, with a fizzy, off-white head. Appears very bubbly and light, just right for the style.

S: Brisk vinegar and ripe cherry scents fill the room as soon as I uncap the bottle, foreshadowing an intensely sour experience. Closer inspection reveals a more cherry pie filling scent, accompanied by tones of lemon meringue and buttery crust; no rye yet. Hints of Concord grape at the finish, like a jam.

T: Without a doubt the sourest beer I’ve ever had – I could feel my eyes inadvertently widen as I took that first sip. The ferocity of this beer is instant, tasting like one of those cherry Warhead candies as it hits the tongue. My palate’s getting one hell of a lashing, and I’m enjoying it to no end. Picking apart the powerful flavor is difficult, but tastes of blueberry, pineapple, and underripe cherry can be identified; a bit of creamy vanilla appears, leading the palate to an overall flavor of tart Greek yogurt with fruit. Interestingly, that vanilla is one of the only hints in here that this beer was aged in oak. Another is the finish, which consists mainly of a sawdust-like woodiness that appears to quell a green olive flavor that would otherwise dominate the aftertaste. Mild spice of poppy seed and pumpernickel on the end, as well.

M: Smooth as can be without being filling. Carbonation is soft, not crisp and overpowering like many in this style, while the body is just barely heavier than a session beer.

O: All in all, this is a sour beer at heart; the oak and rye simply smooth out the rough edges and wrap it all up in a neat little package. Its darkness reminds me of an Oud Bruin – one of my favorite styles – but with a punch that will leave you reeling. Be warned: this one is addictively sour.

S-Oak, grapes, funk, some rye, just great smelling.

T-Oak, grapes, some rye. Very nice sour and funk notes. Not as good as the nose though, but still good. Good balance.

M-Medium bodied and nicely carbonation.

I tasted several sours recently since Local Habit had quite a few on tap for several days. This was my least favorite out of the bunch, but I'm apparently in the minority on this one.

Nearly clear amber in the glass with some decent foam to start. Smells of bread, rubber, and old socks. Quite sour from the first sip. A wee hint of fruity, malty sweetness that is soon overtaken by the vinegar. this one sets my teeth on edge.

An interesting ghost flavor of the malt brew this used to be, before the bacteria were turned loose. Just plain sour, but it has a lingering grainy and faintly hoppy taste. Not much for drinkability.

A: Pours a clear toffee to amber in color with some light to moderate amounts of gentle carbonation and some golden yellow highlights. The beer has a half finger tall off-white head that quickly reduces to a small patch of very thin film and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate to strong aromas of sourness/tartness with some lighter notes of oak, apricot, and sour cherry.

T: The primary flavor I get from this beer is the tartness/sourness which is moderate to strong in strength. There is a great amount of lacto-sour flavors with some moderate notes of oak and just a hint of vanilla. There are also some hints of white grape, apricot, and sour cherry. Delicious .

M: Just heavier than light bodied with moderate to heavy amounts of carbonation. Heavy amounts of acidic prickliness. Light amounts of dryness in the finish.

O: This one definitely makes you pucker up a little bit from the tartness/sourness but yet this remains one of the most drinkable sour beers I have had - and I am a fan of sour beers. There is a great complexity of the flavors in the sourness. I found this one real easy to drink but I needed to sip it.

I'm a sucker for sour beers, and this may be the best one i have ever had. I am currently enjoying a 750ml bottle, but i have also had thison tap at the porter in atlanta.

Ruby/rust in color with little head.

Tart in the best way, sort of like unripe fruit. Lots of wood, vinegar, berry aftertaste.

I use this site often but rarely review beers, i love this beer.

Appearance. Pours a nice amber-gold with a little haze and a finger of off white head.

Smell. Sour and fruity! Strawberry and peach, some nice oaky vanilla, fresh barrel, and sweet funk. A little caramel in there too, but not getting much from the rye.

Taste. Nice and sour! Peach and cherry jump out at me, there's a little rye and caramel as well but all of this is kept in check by the big sourness and that's okay with this guy.

Mouthfeel. Medium body, maybe on the lower side, medium carbonation, also on the lower side.

Overall. A really nice sour, better than I was expecting for some reason. Probably because the rye wasn't so pronounced and there was a ton of fruit flavour.

A - Poured into my tulip a big, condensed head with an orange hue forms. Some really huge bubbles form at the top as it starts to break down. The beer is equally as bubbly, and well filtered. The color is very pretty. I can only describe it as a mix of orange and pink.

S - Quite a strong nose here. Sour fruits, and a definite rye spice presence. I detect some cherries, and grape. Oak is there from the barrel to. Smell is wonderful.

T - The description on the bottle sums this up. Deliciously sour? check. Spicy rye? check. Hints of oak? check. The rye and oak are extremely necessary to add balance to this. The sour/tartness of this beer is right up there with RR Supplication. Theres a bit of stone fruit in the flavor also.

M - The body is light to medium with high carbonation, just as a wild ale normally is. No alcohol felt, but the sour punch this packs demands this a sipper.

O - I'm quite mad at myself. I picked this up at the Blue Dog in Chalfont, and this has been on their tap list for some time. It's probably done now. Had I known I'd of stopped every day after work and had 2 or more. One of the best sours I've had, and I will certainly be ordering this whenever and wherever I can.

Been waiting six months to drink this bad boy. Hope it's worth it. Bottle poured into tulip.

A: Pours a copper/bronze color with an orange tint. The beer looks relatively hazy but without visible sediment. Decent head with big bubbles that (unfortunately) disappates within 30 seconds after pouring. Good lacing around the glass, however. Overall, it looks like how you expect a brown sour ale to look.

S: This beer has a powerful nose that you an easily smell from a good 6 inches away. Initial smells primarily of stone fruit - apricot and cherries mostly. There is a good background of citrus fruit with some earthiness/funkiness one would expect from a sour. Not an overpoweringly sour nose though. I dont get any rye and very little oak, but I expect that to come through in the taste. Overall, the beer has a fruitier nose than expected.

T: I always find sours hard to give an accurate taste profile to since the tartness seems to overwhelm some of the more nuanced tastes. However, I can tell you that this is one exceptional tasting sour. Initial taste is what you would expect: sour apple, citrus fruit, etc. Subsequent sampling reveals the more nuanced profile of the beer: cherries, chardonnay grapes, a definite rye background, and a tinge of oak (like the smell though, not much oak). I'm most impressed with the malt background of this beer: big and robust, it holds up well against the sour Brett. I attribute that to the rye.

M: Dry in the beginning, but surprisingly robust the more you drink the beer. Some sours are like drinking fermented fruit juice - they have no body. Not this beer. It has a robust mouthfeel that really holds up well during drinking and lingers nicely on the tongue.

O: This is one of my new favorite sours. It holds up really well against the more well-known sours from producers like Crooked Stave and NB. It has a unique, fruity flavor profile that is propped up by an excellent malt base. Great job Bruery - I'll be purchasing more if I see it again.

Hazy tawny brownish orange color, compact head of off white foam leaves behind some spotty lace in the glass. Trails of tiny carbonation feeding into the head around the sides, decent retention.

Sharp acidic aroma, sour fruit, namely grapes.

Lots of tannic grapeskin in the taste, bracing acidity that gets the salivary glands into overdrive. Fruity and sour with some acetic acid and malt character in the middle. Dry and puckering, medium bodied with balance carbonation. Overall nice to try, though not overly complex, it fills the sour fix.

Massively sour with tart cherry and lemon rind... almost sour patch kid steez. Even on the finish, the sourness persists. A bit vinous, acidic. This is great. Intense, but great.

Thanks Wisconsin!
