Partridge in a Pear Tree is the first in the 12 Days/Years of Christmas Series. Brewed in the style of a Belgian-style Dark Strong Ale, brewed with our brewery-made dark candi sugar, Munich and Vienna malts. Dark brown in color, fruity and complex with a rich malt backbone. This is a simple yet immensely complex beer meant to be savored and shared with friends and family.

Found this in a liquor store in Frederick, MD

S: Strong raisins, figs, sweet toffee, nuttiness, caramel, rich.

L: Very dark brown, nice light tan head that dissipates.

T: Sweet sticky toffee like malt, undercurrent of bold dark fruits. Mild alcoholic bitterness leads to fading of fruits to chocolate dryness. Very mellow butter pecan flavor follows. Finishes quite neutral.

M: Rich velvety fullness.

A very rich and sweet beer, the alcohol actually works here to keep it from being a boozy mess. I really liked the flavors in this, very dessert like. Wish i had another one to age a bit, still a treat to try.

Name: Partridge in a Pear Tree
Brewery: The Brurey
Location: Placentia, CA
Style: Belgian Quad
ABV: 11.3%
Date: 2020
I am drinking Partridge in a Pear Tree today using a Chalice glass. This beer is 3 years old. Served it at 50 degrees. The pour created a dense, moussy, two-fingered, light tan head with average retention. The color is dark brown, with mahogany hues, charting around SRM 22. The beer is semi-opaque. The dissipation left lacing on the glass. The appearance is average for this style.
The initial aromas are Christmas spices, candied orange, bready, and phenolic. Nosing the glass again, I detect cherries, plums, pepper, caramel, floral esters, and a light herbal. Other faint aromas are raisin, toasted malts, cloves, and vanilla. A complex nose on this beer.
The flavors are Christmas spice of nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves, and allspice. The malty base is a toasted bread crust with a malty sweetness. I also taste vanilla, light herbal, white pepper, phenolic, dried plums, raisins, orange, floral esters, and dried cherries.
The mouthfeel is creamy and finishes with some alcohol warming. The body is medium, with high carbonation.
I am impressed with this quad. It was balanced with loads of flavors. I am going to try to get all twelve at some time. I have five of them so far; a couple are barrel-aged. Another delightful beer from the Brurey.

A: Poured into a snifter to a deep brown beer which is nearly black. The beer is topped by a dense and slightly rocky finger and a half of tan head which fads slowly to a collar around the edge of the glass
S: Smells like a very traditional Belgian quad. dark fruits, hints of cherries, caramel, spicy yeast and candi sugar
T: Taste is dark fruits and cherries up front with some nice mulling spice notes from the yeast, a touch of caramel, and bready malts as well with some sugary sweetness. On the finish there's more dark fruits and mulling spices with some more caramel, cherries, and dark fruits.
M: This beer has a body which is on the heavier side of medium and slightly syrupy. Carbonation is effervescent and adequate for the style while the beer has a drying finish due to the ABV.

Poured from 750 mL bottle into tulip.
A: Pours a nice dark ruby hue with 1 inch frothy tan head with decent retention.
S: Red berries up front quickly followed by fresh banana bread, clove, nutmeg, lightly toasted malt, and hints of dark dried fruit.
T: Red berries, dark cherries, fresh banana bread, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, raisin, toasted vanilla, and soft oak.
M: Medium body. Full and plush feel. Coating layers of fruit and malt sweetness along with holiday spices. Lingers nicely on the palate.
D: A very nice example of style. Good complexity and easy to approach with excellent drinkability. A great first day of Christmas!

Pours a dark rosy brown, brief but robust 2" tan head, fair retention and lacing. Nose is brown bread, spicy pumpernickel, roasted malt, baking spices, earthy hops - a hopped up brown ale with deeper notes of brown sugar. Taste, however, is far different - lots of fruity yeast notes, bread pudding with boozy raisins, pears, and apples, brown bread. As it warms, the breadier notes become more prominent and help balance the sugars. Mouthfeel is on the fuller side of medium with a bit of chew and a fair amount of small carbonation. Overall solid and really comes into its own as it warms.

750ml bottle poured into tulip.

Pours rootbeer brown with two fingers of khaki head that leaves serrated volcanic rock lace as it recedes.

Smells of oatmeal with spiced apple, raisin tarts, bubblegum, pear pudding, spiced toffee and a bit of earthy hops.

Tastes of caramel pears, more spicy apple oatmeal, sugared raisins, salted chocolate, brown sugar and faint alcohol.

Feels big and grand. Full bodied with frothy carbonation. Finishes sweet and chewy.

Verdict: Vigorously recommended. Perfect for movie night.
