12 oz. glass enjoyed at The Beer Mongers PDX, during impromptu tasting with The Usual Suspects, tulip glass $4, 2010 version, 8.16.11.

Slightly cloudy amber brown body with some reddish highlights, no visible carbonation. 1/4 finger carbonation with quick dissipation with some lacing retaining. Very interesting nose, toffee, some burnt sugar, vanilla, some barrel notes. Taste mirrors nose, not overly sweet, nicely balanced. Mouthfeel is on the full side of medium, not much effervescence. Pretty boozy but the aging has tamed the ABV a bit, I'd be very interested to see how this taste a few years from now. A real sipper to be taken seriously.

Draft version served at the Wildwood beer dinner.

The beer pours a copper amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is sweet and oaky, with vanilla and chocolate taking center stage. I also get some nuts and black cherry vanilla in the sweet nose, which adds to the attraction. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this smooth, sweet barleywine, and I get a hint of bourbon and heat from alcohol in the finish. Mouthfeel is very full and rich, with a long, soft, plush finish.

This is a very impressive BW, and one that I think can only improve with time. Right now, I get a hint of alcohol and bitterness in the finish that I expect will fade and integrate over time.
