Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a rather large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of roasted malt with nice black chocolate undertones is quite enticing. Taste is a good mix between some lightly dry roasted malt notes with some creamy and semi-sweet black chocolate notes. Body is about average with somewhat of a creamy texture and good carbonation with no apparent alcohol. Not as powerful as most example of the style but rich chocolate flavours have won me over.

500mL bottle from La Duchesse D'Aiguillon (Quebec City). 7.99. No bottling date. They aren't kidding about being a "microbrasserie"- labels are generic stickers with the name "Rang 10" hand written as well as the % alc/vol of "10.8%", earning it a check in the box for "Biere Extra Forte". Served in a Microbrasserie Charlevoix goblet.

Pours dark, near-black brown with three fingers of stubborn, lingering tan head. When the head finally dies down it leaves nice large patches of lace.

Smells of roast malts, dark fruit, cocoa and oak.

Taste is a unique mix that is heavy on the dark fruits and an almost yeasty character. Cherry pits, over ripe plums, bitter cocoa, red grapes, charred wood, whiskey, mild smoke, licorice, vanilla, burnt caramel and a nice healthy bite of alcohol. As it warms, more bourbon or whiskey notes come through.

Body is lighter than expected but still medium full with pronounced carbonation. Lingering, bitter char finish with whispers of wood and bourbon.

I wasn't sure for the first few sips but this grew on me. One of several fine recommendations from the friendly purveyor of ale at La Duchesse D'Aiguillon. Very little to go on but I suspect this spent some time in a barrel. I'd be interested in checking out some other offerings from these guys.

500ml bottle, ABV listed at 10.8% on my bottle. Date on bottle, lot 473, January 2013. Poured into a large wine glass, served moderately warm. 7.99$/bottle.

A: Came out like motor oil, thick, syrupy, massive chocolate milkshake frothy head, 2 fingers+, leaves a good froth sitting on top...

S: Dark/burnt roasted malts, dark fruits/berries are prominent, not too sweet, some light alcohol on the nose.

T: Sweet malts up front, burnt brown sugar/caramels. More dark berries on the palate, finishing with slightly bitter coffee & wood and some alcohol burn.

M: Med-High carbonation, fizzy on the tongue, smooth, light body (a bit thin) for this style of beer, quite a bit alcohol after-burn that coupled with the fizz, keeps your mouth quite 'warm'.

O: Interesting beer. Read somewhere that it was fermented, not aged in oak, which would explain why you don't get any bourbon flavours/aroma in this one except for some slight oakiness. Also, high ABV but also light body and high carbonation, making it an easy-heavy drinker.... it goes down easy with some burn, but you certainly feel the alcohol in this one, you know it in your mouth and your head. Decent enough RIS that is different from all the others, so in that regards worth a try, even if I don't feel like it's something I'd buy again.

thank you flipper2gv. never thought i'd add something as popular as a russian imperial. and a damn good one too.

this was all the proper form in the look with a nice consistent had and a well aged quality that had smoothened out the edges. carbonation was a healthy aggressive. bottle couldn't be poured straight in that you wold get a thicker darker head of brown. when pulled lightly there was a good mocha head. with retention. and not sticky. this wasn't a syrupy RIS. actually quite light and smooth. had a nice nose of ground and a citrus twist that peaked... the predominant fruit was a more a blackberry, black currant quality. subtle chocolate oatmeal. palate felt great and a perfect consistency for the warmth that went down. nice and smooth. coffee, vanilla bourbon notes and a dry dry kicker of a bitter. like blue cheese mineral astringent. a bit earthy. a bit sweet. but well balanced between fruit, hopping, and mineral. would say that i had it at just the right time in the aging process.
