A - Pours a near black dull smokey/hazy color, thick dence tofee colored head, very nice retnetion, supurb lacing

S - Roasty/smokey coffee, oak and vanilla flavors.

T - Slightly sweet vanilla & lactose up front to a roastier kick in the middle. Very smokey, minor pepper like flavors at the finish. Very good

M - Medium bodied+ little but appropriate carbonation.

O - Tasty brew, lots of smokey/roasty flavors, the vanilla makes itself well known also

Pours an opaque dark brown almost Coca-Cola color but darker in the glass. A one finger frothy tan head tops the beer, slowly recedes leaving heavy lacing. Sweet malty smells are slightly over powered by smoke and a splash on vanilla. First sip is more smoky than vanilla but pretty darn balanced. The body like most De Dochter’s is very thin but it is perfectly carbonated and quite tasty so I can live with the thin body. A very tasty yummy beer indeed.

Poured from a 660ml bottle into a straight pint glass and topped up.

Pours a dark brown, verging on black colour, with an off-white head.

Smells sweet, roasted and malty, with a hint of vanilla.

Tastes of roasted malts - quite sweet and dry on the finish, with a slight hint of vanilla lingering in the background.

Overall quite a nice stout, simple and easy going without being too plain and 'balanced'.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

Smoky and sweet, both in a stout. I'm prepping my knee for a potential proposal if this first date works out as well in reality as it does in my expectations. This stuff pours a murkily deep black-brown topped by a couple fingers of sandy khaki foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, beech smoke, dark molasses, cocoa powder, and a hint of vanilla bean in the background. The taste emphasizes the smoke, which seems to drown out the sweeter portions, but melds with the roasty ones. Some dark chocolate powder still pokes through, but the vanilla is utterly demolished. An unfortunate result of this smoke focus is a sharp phenolic bitterness that pervades the finish and lingers into the aftertaste. It's not enough to completely ruin the tasting experience, but it does sound a sour note. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, though I'm not immediately putting a ring on this beer, I will say that our relationship is generally a good one. I wish the smoke and sweetness could exist more genially, but at least, as it stands, the two aren't exactly actively battling it out on the tongue. Instead, the smoke just cuckolds the rest. Again, it's not optimally pleasant, but it really isn't all that bad, either.

66cl Bottle: shared with the wife and Doug (an American chap from near Boston) on 20 Oct 2012 @ The Diester Bierfestival.

Dark brown body with a lightly tanned, creamy head of foam.

The nose and taste were of dark chocolate and burnt coffee beans, couldn't find any vanilla, the burnt esters overshaddowed anything that wasn't equally as powerful and nothing else was!

Rich enough but a little drier than I thought a 'Vanilla Stout' should be: enjoyed it, but moved on fairly quickly and the beer was easily forgotten, my notes being my only sour of information. I usually have some thoughts about a beer to add when I transfer from book to web-page, sadly I don't really remember much about this at all (and I wasn't bladdered either).

22oz. Descently black pour, thin frothy layer of very light tan.

Aroma, mild roast, more milk chocolate and vanilla. Kind of subdued. Some smoked earth.

Taste, Some roast malt, dark chocolate. An herbal hop note that comes off a bit cardboardy. Fades into a fresh ground coffee, like chewing on some coffee grounds. Burnt toast?
My god that is an acrid ashy ass finish. Eases as it warns a bit, releasing more vanilla and chocolates. Still pretty roasty.

Not quite medium body, carbonation a tad on the high side. Abv is hidden, but this is pretty unbalanced to the roast and bitter side for a milk stout.

Picked this up at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Dark, dark mahogany pour with two finger caramel colored head with great retention and incredible lacing. The nose is totally dominated by the smoke. There are subtle roasty cocoa notes, but you really get very little of the vanilla. The taste follows suit initially with the smokey roasted malt dominating. But as it warmed, it really opened up quite a bit. Hints of cocoa, bitter dark chocolate, and finally, the vanilla. This is definitely a beer that needs to be served at the proper temp. The mouthfeel is really smooth and creamy, but perhaps a tad bit thin in the body, with a nice subtle dry, bitter finish. I tasted this beer at the brewery when it was really young. In fact, the bottles weren't even labeled yet. The vanilla was crazy dominant and there was very little smoke. It's changed quite a bit from then. Once it opened up, this was a damn good beer. I wish it would have retained a bit more of the vanilla bean, but it's still very solid.

22.4 ounce bottle, best before end of January 2014. Served in a nonic pint glass, the beer pours dark brown with some ruby red tints, along with an inch and a half frothy tan head that stays around for a while. There's also a lot of lacing left on the glass. The aroma is nice, it smells like roasted and smoked malt, vanilla and some chocolate. The taste is similar to the aroma, however I think the vanilla and roasted malt flavors are dominant, and the smoked malt is light in comparison. Mouthfeel/body is on the light side of medium, it seems a bit thin, but it's also easy enough to drink. Moderate carbonation. I think this is a solid brew, at $9.99 a bottle I'll likely buy it again in the future.

Bottle I brought to share at the bottle share hosted by Adam Fine Wine & Liquor held at Sophie’s Place in Redondo Beach, CA.

Best before 1/2014.

Pours a murky dark brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of smoked malt, vanilla beans, and some really smoky bacon-like aromas. Taste is of smoked malt, vanilla, and some char flavors that leave a bitter aftertaste with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but it’s very smoky in the aroma and flavor and has a pretty high amount of char flavor.

A: The beer is very dark brown (near black) in color. It poured with a finger high beige head that gradually died down and consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: There are aromas of smoked malts in the nose. Hints of vanilla beans also become noticeable as the beer warms up.
T: Like the smell, the taste has light to moderately strong flavors of smoke along with some hints of vanilla beans and bitterness. As the beer warms up, the vanilla becomes a little more evident and the taste also becomes a little sweeter.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit thin on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is some dryness in the finish.
O: This beer is easy to drink because it is relatively light-bodied compared to other stouts; however, a little heavier mouthfeel could make the taste more interesting.

A: Pours a clear very dark brown (close to black) in color with light hints of dark amber when held up to the light. The beer has a two finger tall fluffy light tan head that slowly reduces to a thin layer over the entire surface and a thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light aromas of smoke with some very light hints of vanilla (that intensifies as the beer warms).

T: Light to moderate flavors of dark roasted malts with soem lighter smokey notes. Very light hints of vanilla in the finish that gets stronger as it warms. Very light amount of bitterness.

M: Medium bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery with some light amounts of dryness.

O: Enjoyable but I wish the vanilla was just a little more pronounced. This is a sipping beer that can be enjoyed slowly. I like the fact that the smoke flavors and smell are not overwhelming.

Got this at Geers in Gent a while back. A relatively new brewery and they've started to get more creative recently. This is labeled as a Smoked Vanilla Stout.

From a bomber into a snifter.

APPEARANCE: Very clear brown pour yields a two finger, medium looking, fluffy, light beige head with outstanding retention. Black transparent body with higher levels of carbonation. Head slowly fades to a good foam cap and coats the sides of the glass. A foam cap remains the whole way and leaves lots of lacing down the glass. Too bad it’s a little thin and transparent for the style, ‘cause the head and finish look great.

SMELL: Some roasted malts and cocoa powder fill the nose off the bat, with some smoky and vanilla aromas filling in the background nicely. Light caramel notes as well, but this one is more about the smoky notes and cocoa powder.

TASTE: Quite nice actually. Roasted and smoked malts up front with cocoa powder playing a roll too. Sweet cream and vanilla through the middle into a smoky, bitter cocoa and sweet vanilla cream finish. Quite flavorful and well put together, with all the elements balanced nicely together.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Nice and creamy smooth on the palate, a little light perhaps, goes down smooth and finishes slightly dry. Could use a little more weight, but this is solidly creamy smooth.

OVERALL: A solid brew for sure. It doesn’t wow or anything like that, but at 7%, it is very flavorful and well balanced for the style. Definitely one worth going back to, and for sure worth trying if you happen to see a bottle. Recommended.
