Pours a deep, dark ruby colour, maybe some silty sediment. Head is cloudy, sunken and whispy. LAce is decent, but doesn't really cling to the glass. Not bad.

Smells very sweet and very toasty. Big, toasted bread aroma, with some pumpernickel, carraway and maybe some burnt toffee at the back adding to the sweetness. Bit plain, just a rich toasty aroma. Quite like it though, it's deceptively simple.

Taste is a bit odd again, has a lighter, quite hoppy mid-palate following toasty sweetness upfront. Almost strips back with some oily hop notes that then gets that toasty note at the back. Hint of banana, caramel & marmalade, with toasty bread, hint of caramel, some vanilla pod and carob as well.

A bit thin on the mouthfeel, but a decent texture that slowly dries out the mouth. Fullish but also fluid, holds back for a while before any real mouth presence shows up.

Interesting drop, not something I will cherish, but happy to have drunk it.

A: pours a root beer brown with a very small head that dissipates instantaneously. Decent red/brown color.
S: Lots of coffee and chocolate notes.
T: Some small coffee notes round into a malty medium with lots of carbonation. Good taste but fades off the tongue quickly.
M: Lots of carbonation and some mild malt.
O: Decent, wouldnt drink all the time but I could see it as a decent stout to close the night with. Lighter than most stouts.

On nitro tap at Nobi Public House in Webster, Texas.

I've had the regular version canned and I give that around a 3.75... but this nitro version is out of this world. One of my favorite beers ever.... ever!

Simply smooth, dark and delicious... I can't get enough of it.. well, I can... but I wish I couldn't if that makes sense. Of course it doesn't.

I just love this beer. I'll be on the lookout for it more now.

12oz can poured into a Gulden Draak tulip glass

Appearance- Jet black in color with 3 fingers of tan head. The head dissipates into about 1 finger worth and leaves nice lacing on the glass.

Smell- Lots of coffee and chocolate with a backbone of piney hops.

Taste- Following the nose with tons of chocolate and coffee. The sweet flavors are balance well with a black coffee bitterness and some pine hop.

Mouthfeel- Definitly a little on the light side for a stout, but very drinkable which makes for a good sessionable stout.

Overall- They hit a homerun here. The smell, the taste and look are just spot on. There is a strong coffee grounds presence towards the end and a watery mouthfeel, but those are the only low points as everything else is out of this world.

Poured a deep dark brown with a faint head which immediately disappeared into pale ring where the glass meets the beer at the surface. There was sediment floating around.

Toffee nose.

This slightly sweet malty stout initially tastes like chocolate turning to a more coffee and grade A maple syrup flavor with a nutty finish. Balanced to minimal hop character, but appropriate bitterness.

Medium bodied mouthfeel.

Overall this is a tasty beer with a straight-forward flavor profile. I will be drinking more soon.

A-This beer is very dark brown, almost black, and opaque. The thin tan head fades to nothing and leaves a bit of spotty lacing.

S- Powerful nose of strong roasted chocolate and coffee malts, like opening a container of cocoa powder and coffee beans that have been roasting on open fire. Alcohol pushes through as the beer warms.

T-The roasted coffee flavor, bittersweet chocolate, and maltiness are a nice blend. Unfortunately, the thin feel and strong alcohol burn drag it down.

M- pretty fizzy and thin for the style. Alcohol heavy.

O- Can I get this in a lower ABV, please?

Pours a dark brown color with a small amount of tan head that recedes to leave some spotty lacing.

Aromas begin with some roasted malt, overly toasted bread, cocoa powder and some light coffee. As it warms you get some emerging caramel and vanilla sweetness.

The tastes begin with dark chocolate and some roasted malt acrid bitterness. Some sweeter toffee and caramelized malts also emerge with more backbone bitterness (which could be hops) emerge as it warms.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with carbonation on the lighter side of medium. Finish is fairly dry and bitter but has some mild creamy qualities which could be from some oats or wheat malt.

Overall this was a decent stout but nothing too crazy or complex flavor-wise. It was a little too bitter for me and the drinkability wasn't poor but I wasn't compelled to finish the remainder of my pint.

Buried Hatchet, 12oz can and a great extra from BeerHunter76, poured into a New Belgium Globe.

A: Near transparent brown with tawny highlights...creamy light tan head settles into a nice ring and leaves some lacing...

S: Big robust brown malt character upfront, leading to a pulling suggestion of vanilla and birch wood as well as some nutty caramel characters...roast is there too but the coffee sensation is light....more hints of caramel with molasses and chocolate.

T: Unique, more dry nutty flavors compete with a big sweetness, very close to a tootsie roll IMO...caramel, molasses, and chocolate and a faint suggestion of licorice...some earthy hop notes compete ever so slightly with the sweetness, and the roast component is secondary but lends some dry body. More birch syrup, big nutty & wood-like earthy flavors.

MF: Thinner medium body with a dry finish, with some bitterness on the finish as well.

O: A unique stout, something that works pretty well I think, and was pretty enjoyable to me. It may have more in common with a big brown ale than a stout though - it seemed like it could be a kissing cousin to a beer like Life & Limb or even Indian Brown or Palo Santo Marron (to a lesser extent). Recommended, if you can get it.

A - poured from a 12oz can into a standard pint glass. Looks fine, dark chocolate color in appearance, some tan head, mild retention. Nothing great nothing bad here.

S - smells of chocolate powder, some coffee in there, not a lot otherwise. Smells is good but nothing exciting, solidly average.

T- follows the nose some milk and dark chocolates and mild coffee. Flavors are pretty consistent throughout, some mild bittering on the end.

M - definitely the beer's weak point. Quite thin, mild low carb, expecting a lot more thickness. If this element were improved, I think everything else improves as well.

O - an average to slightly above average stout. Flavors are nice, but underwhelming. Wish it would be a little thicker and aggressive, but can't really complain. If this were available in my area, I would probably buy a four pack every now and then. As someone else pointed out, this would be a good beginner's stout.

A dark but not the usual black stout color. Very tiny light tan head even with a vigorous pour. Minimal lacing. Looks.... Eh.

S very light. A little chocolate, tiny coffee, tiny malt.

T also very light. Light chocolate beginning with a sweet odd flavor chocolate middle and a tiny malt and coffee end. The aftertaste is very light and short lived. Just a little malt ending.

M thin, no carbonation.

O eh... Wouldn't buy it again. The thing it has going for it is that it is very light tasting with a decent 8% abv.

Serving type - Can

Appearance - Black with tint of tan, 1 inch creamy head and foamy lacing.

Smell - Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, rasin, plum, brown sugar, mollasses. Honey, smoke, oats.

Taste - Roasted malts, chocolate and coffee are the main flavors. Mild, almost watery flavors, mild sweeetness, smoky body. Slight bitter coffee flavors mixed with rasin and plum. Mollaasses and brown sugar add some sweetness. ALcohol is masked under the malts.

Mouthfeel - ITs rather light for a double stout, malts and coffee coat tounge with mild sweetness. Palate gets more malts, along with some sugars and chocolate. Aftertaste is weak, malty.

Overall - Decent, rather thin and mild for being the style that it is. Really drinkable, and perfect for the person that cant handle, or isnt ready for big, bold double stouts like founds imp stout, ten fidy and such. A good beginner or something light for when u need your stout fix. Balanced well, and easy to drink.

A - Pours a dark brown body with a creamy khaki head. Lets a lot of light in around the edges. Light lacing and retention.

S - Roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee beans.

T - Roasty malts and bitter coffee. Bitterness is balanced by a vanilla and chocolate sweetness. Mouth feel is on the thin side. Abrupt ad quick finish. Certainly doesn't feel like an 8.25% stout, drinkabiliy is high and deceiving.

O - Been wanting to try this one for while. Kind of an odd beer actually. The flavor and mouth feel indicate a tamer and more approachable stout or porter, but the abv says otherwise. Very clean and easy drinking though.

Pours black with thick light tan head in a Raise Your Pints Mississippi snifter.

Smell is dark chocolate, darkly toasted malts, coffee, toffee, vanilla and smoky oak.

Taste is dark toasted malt and chocolate. Smoky oak and an ash character come through. Bitterness lingers on the tongue but is mild.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Mild to medium carbonation.

Overall this is a good stout.

Love when I can find great beers in a can. I traded to Exiled (in October of 2011!) to get this beer, thanks a bunch! Poured into my perfect pint.

Appearance: Not jet black, but dark brown with red highlights. This is the first time, other than gushers, that I have gotten a four finger head. Rocky, tan, and settles slowly, leaving spotty lacing. Very nice looking.

Smell: Coffee and cocoa with mineral hints. Roasted malts.

Taste: Taste follows smell. More chocolate than coffee. Great roast flavor, without pushing the envelope. A nice roast bittersweetness at the finish.

Mouthfeel: The body is medium with good carbonation. Strong enough to be a factor, but never gets in the way.

Overall: I really enjoyed this beer. Totally different than Ten Fidy. I really wish this was available here.

I had this on tap as part of a flght of 5 Texas beers for $10 at the Flying Saucer Beer Emporium in downtown Houston, Texas. 5oz portions of 5 different beers.

The beer had a very dark brown color to it, but only had a thin tan rim on top for a head and even that dissipated quickly. Carbonation looked lively.

Coffee, toffee, and chocolate smell.

Roasted malt flavor with hints of coffee and chocolate. A nice bitterness adds balance, and a little bit of cream flavor makes it even more interesting.

A little on the thin side for a stout, and more carbonated than most, but I still liked what smooth, creamy texture that remained.

A very enjoyable stout from a brewery I never head of before trying this offering.

Poured from a 12 oz can into a Half Acre tulip.

A- pours a dark brown with a 2" tan head. Littered with blotches and large bubbles of lacing.

S- big roast aroma, some coffee and chocolate.

T- light dark chocolate, roasted malts, and some pine bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Lighter creamy feel with nice smooth finish.

O- very nice drinkable stout. Watch out because you can drink a few of these easily until the abv would catch up to you.

This beer pours a dark mahogany, not quite black, with a one finger head, no retention and no real lacing. The nose is a very powerful coffee, and roasted malt. Mouthfeel is pleasant, but nothing special. The taste is a big sweetness on the front, maybe molasses flavor, giving way to a biting bitterness with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted nuts, and a little alcohol. Overall a nice offering.

A: Poured a deep, deep brown with good carbonation leaving behind a small dirty wigte cap which fades fast leaving a faint rings and few bubbles

S: Day old Folgers coffee with a hint of chcolate

T: Confused. Is this an Imperial Brown or Imperial Stout? The backbone of brown malt, light coffee, toffee really makes me think thing this is a Imperial Brown, the only difference is the addition of coffee.The finish is highly carbonated with a lgering toffee, coffe and nuttiness. Rather clean and dry.

M: Medium bodied, a tad bit over carbed for a Imperial Stout? Body is a little thin for the style

O: This beer is somewhat tasty and enjoyable but I am big stcikler on BJCP guidelines. This beer as a Impy Stout is pretty far off.

Got this in an awesome trade from Tofuspeedstar, thanks for all the texas goodies!

A - really dark but not a black , more of an extreme brown with some lightness on the edges, looks nice 'even from a can'

S - mmmm...yum, sweet chocolate and a nice toasty smell as well bordering on coffee grounds and toffee

T - Sweetness and a good variation of its qualities, from deeper coffee roast to a lighter milk chocolate and toffee , very creamy smooth feel and evolution of flavors, very tasty even if it isn't as thick as most stouts

O - Awesome beer, a really well done and complex tasting stout that offers a lot more than some of the more common one note stouts. It brings all the indulging flavors of milk chocolate covered coffee grounds with a heath bar

Poured into a Stone snifter after sitting out of the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.

A: deep mahogany brown with some dark amber and ruby hues at the edges. 1 finger foamy, light tan head settled to a 1/8” ring with a disconnected film of bubbles. Small amount of streaky lacing left behind.

S: heavy milk chocolate aroma with moderate notes of medium-roast coffee. Very faint dark fruits and I swear a hint of cherry is in there somewhere. Very sweet smelling with a slight charred edge at the end. As the beer warms, the sharp coffee notes begin to take center stage and the hops start to become more prevalent. All in all, the aroma is fairly simple but promising.

T: Again, heavy on the milk chocolate and toasty coffee flavor up front, but a little thin and watery after that. Earthy / herbal hops balance out the sweetness well. Faint fruitiness on the back-end. The flavor starts out promising, but drops the ball after the first few moments.

M: very thin for an Imperial Stout…on the low end of medium-bodied. Carbonation is a little high for the style as well, very prickly on the tongue.

Overall: Considering the arguably low ABV relative to the style, I wasn’t expecting anything mind-blowing or incredibly complex, but even so, Buried Hatchet was a bit disappointing. Drinks much more like a “session” stout…nothing Imperial at all about the flavor. The appearance and aroma were both very promising, but the lack of body and somewhat shallow flavor made this one I probably won’t seek out again at $10 for a 4-pack.

A- Pours a slightly translucent, but mostly opaque reddish brown. About a finger's worth of yellowish brown off-white creamy head with great retention that leaves nice layered lacing around the sides of the glass. Above average carbonation for a stout.

S- Butterscotch, caramel malts, brown sugar, smells delicious, definitely on the sweet side but fairly average aroma strength.

T- Caramel malts, a tiny bit of butterscotch, some light chocolate, finishes with a slightly bitter lightly sweet butterscotch/caramel malts taste. Not as sweet as I was expecting and could have been balanced a tiny bit better.

M- Fairly thin, a little bit too thin for a stout in my opinion, a little bit too much carbonation, easy to drink, abv well hidden.

O- This was an okay stout. It was definitely a little bit too thin and carbonated for my liking. The malts dominated the taste a tiny bit, but everything else was balanced nicely. Nice appearance and smell, the mouthfeel could use some working on though- too thin. Easy to drink and definitely enjoyed the chance to try this one- thanks again SSW117.

Buried Hatchet Stout pours to a very dark brown color with tinges of redness. Its nose is bold and inviting, with a scent that combines coffee, chocolate, a little toffee, and a little bit of vanilla. Its foam level is nice at first, but it does fade away in a relatively short time. Still, it manages to maintain a cap of tan colored bubbles that holds its own to the bottom of the glass and there is a small amount of lacing.

Buried Hatchet Stout is a complex brew and it offers many great flavors to keep the stout lover satisfied. The flavors of chocolate and coffee are the most obvious, but there are also tastes of toffee, caramel, toasted malt, nuts, light herbal hops, and fruit. The beer has a definite creaminess to its body and there is some bitterness, but it is quickly reigned- in by the taste of the sweet malt and smoothness.

Buried Hatchet Stout has many qualities that make it a memorable brew. Its complexity is obvious and its flavor just keeps on giving. The flavor profile of mocha, caramel and toffee, fruit, etc., will satisfy most any fan of the style. Its aroma is wonderful and its body, while not as full as the nose may lead you to believe, is still full enough that most will not mind.

Buried Hatchet Stout is a very interesting beer with a smoothness not often found in beers with this alcohol level. Try some for yourself, if you can get your hands on a can, and discover the malty smoothness of this Texas- brewed malt beverage treat.

Can courtesy of Al. Funny how I was born & raised in South TX and saw this on the shelves all the time, yet my first taste comes while living in NYC.

Pours a translucent brown body with some head; a faint ring of foam remains around the edges. Stouts should be much darker in color -- you sure this isn't a brown ale?

Coffee and toasted malts hit my nose. Pleasant, I suppose, but I want more roast from my stouts. Again with the brown ale comparisons. Roast them malts, son!

Despite everything above, the taste works reasonably well. Coffee and chocolate dwell for a bit before it turns watery, making this one quite sessionable. Body is unacceptably thin for an imperial stout, and the overall experience suffers because of it.

I suppose Buried Hatchet is a decent, sessionable stout for a hot day outside. However, SS needs to either re-work parts of this recipe or re-brand it as a brown ale because this brew simply doesn't work as an imperial stout. And frankly, it isn't even close to competing with the off-the-shelf stouts we get here. Grab a Founders Imperial Stout and you'll see.

A: Dark brown to black body, with half a finger high head, lots of lacing.

S: Not much smell at all... some malt and very faint hops.

T: It also doesn't taste like much. Roasted malt... and that's it. It's not sweet or boozy... it tastes like a bit stronger Draught Guinness

M: Really light body.

O: It's nice but not good for the style. I was very surprised to see that it had 8.25% ABV. It tastes more like your typical 4% Irish stout. Please note though that I am having this beer about an hour after a bottle of Uncle Jacobs.

Chocolaty aroma, also notice toffee

Dark, dark, maroon color, definitely lets some light through.

Nice and roasty, the chocolate comes through, very well balanced with the hops.

Body is medium, carbonation is a bit high for my ideal stout

Overall, I really like this stout, it's very satisfying.
