Opaque very dark brown leathery looking body, tan head. Front of prune, light date, toasted caramel, faint candi sugar, followed by a wave of big chestnut, dark malt, with a wave of tobacco, earth and a refined yeast. Smell has big earth, tobacco, and caramel leading, mild yeast, malt and dried dark fruit supporting. Artisanal light and dry body with yeast starring the most here supporting by the malt and barley. One of the best beers we had in italy. The wife loved it

been ages since i have seen anything new to me from baladin, used to love scoring these sexy bottles, the beer has always been curious and delicious, and i have long had a lot of love for what they do. was stoked to find this one, somewhere between a belgian dark strong and an english barleywine, some sugar other than grain derived is likely to me, but its not really that belgian either, despite the ferment being a key element, not unlike some other hard to categorize italian craft stuff, this one is its own thing, very cool. middle brown toned with reddish edges, slightly fizzy but not much head, a little haze, and less viscosity than anticipated, perhaps some weird conditioning in the bottle has taken place, got this off a dry shelf. sort of a festive aroma here, toasted chestnut, bread crusts, dark sugar, subtle white pepper, red wine, raisin, leather, and anise, unique character for sure, slightly alcoholic but not bad. dried fruit up front here, malt layers in the middle, light licorice, dry baking chocolate, and dr pepper soda. cool sort of spice profile from the ferment but to me its not estery enough to be classically belgian, vinous as it warms, maybe faintly oxidized but i never mind that in these malty strong ales. some sort of english and german bready elements to thge malt, a molasses wrinkle, drier than expected on the finish but still with some residual sweetness, wish it had more carbonation activity to keep it moving, it gets a little heavy as it sits. cool beer, maybe a little past its prime in this instance, but great to drink a beer from these guys again after way too long. not my all time favorite from them, but a nice evening sipper.

This one pours a darkish brown, almost black color, with a big fluffy head, and lots of lacing.
This smells like sweet milk chocolate, vague spicing, black cherry, molasses, and breadiness.
This is absolutely delicious. There’s a very pronounced chocolate, sweet but not overly so, as the spicy and bready notes help balance this sweetness. There’s a nice dark fruit and cherry note as well, dry and leathery.
This is creamy, and pretty rich, with a very good drinkability.
This is one of the best BDSAs that I’ve ever had, easily. It’s very delicious.

750 ml corked and waxed bottle, as Baladin Leön, from Vinmonopolet, Nettbutikken. BB date Nov. 2014. ABV is 9%. Hazy dark brown colour, large off-white head. Aroma of mild spices, dark dried fruits and rotting fruits. Malty and mildly spicy flavour, notes of brown sugar and caramel, hints of vanilla, but still not too sweet. Dark dried fruits again. Light bodied for its strength, and pleasant to drink.

Poured from the bottle into a tulip nonic pint glass.
Cherry copper red, fairly clear with minimal head creation. Tan fleeting with a limited collar.
Very closed nose. Caramel and a bit of sucrose making for a taffy candy store flavor. Doesn't seem very Belgian even a touch of black licorice is in there.
Palate is enjoyable and solid. Not quite to my style but gets into milk chocolate instead of fruit dark esters. Clean solid mouthfeel, maybe a touch of cream also.
Doesn't quite seem like Belgian dark, but has a solid flavor profile.

It tastes sour and sweet at the same time, and I like it a lot!
