Maxfield's is about the only place to get a good pint in Potsdam, NY. If you've ever been to Potsdam than you know that's not saying a whole lot. Even still they have about 15-20 taps. Usually 5-10 are dedicated to the macros. And the rest are pretty good beers. Great Lakes is very common on tap, so is dogfish head, troegs makes appearances also. The food is good too, probably best in Potsdam (again, not saying too much). I recommend the Tuna Nicoise salad (seared). It's delicious. There burgers are pretty dank too. If you're in town, or your taking your parents out to eat somewhere, this is the place to go.

Maxfields is what I would call a wannabe craft bar and restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed and they do have live jazz on Friday's during happy hour. A nice place to go with some friends.

They generally have around four great beers on tap with several lesser beers as company. Since they rotate out relatively quickly you can usually count on a high quality pint, but if you see one around for more than a week the chances are it's still the same keg.

The service is quite variable. Some nights you'll get a friendly and knowledgeable bartender that will recommend beers and what order to try them. Other nights it will take you 15 minutes just to get a bartender's attention while they chat with some friends they invited to work.

The food is alright. Not the best, not the worst. It ranks relatively high on the scale in terms of Potsdam, NY, but there are many better restaurants right in town. The selection is wide enough, and on some nights it can be surprisingly good. If you order a steak, go one temp rarer than intended. I usually follow this rule unless I know for a fact that the kitchen staff is excellent. As a cook myself I'm quite picky about accurate temps.

Overall the place is good, but not great. Prices are a bit high, which is the main problem. If it were a little cheaper my expectations would be a bit lower.

Maxfield's, in Potsdam, is in general a fine bar. As a resturant the food is a bit pricey and ultimately disappointing, and the evidence of this can be seen by how little resturant business they get. Even during happy hour (4-6pm) the resturant area can be completely empty, with few people even at the bar. But this quietness adds to the (normally) relaxing atmosphere. Beers from the tap go for about 4 dollars a glass most nights, which can be tough on this poor man's wallet, but on Wednesday nights they have a 1-2-3 tradition (9-10pm=1$ a beer, 10-11=2$, etc.). On Wednesday nights the place is just flat out crowded, and this can get irritating, and the beer is served in plastic cups (a huge turn-off for me, personally, as I'm sure it is to others) but on any other night the bar area is generally relaxed and there is rarely (if ever) any serious "rowdiness". Though being a college town, some noise can be expected while school is in. For both bar and resturant customers, there is an out-doors open deck area overlooking the river, which can be both relaxing and exciting, depending on the crowd and the time of day.

Now for the beer. Although the brews are consistently getting rotated with new beers available all the time, some of the better beers I've seen on tap: DFH Aprihop, Great Lakes Burning River, Lagunitas Czech Pils, Great Divide Titan IPA. Also beers from Long Trail, UFO, Rogue, and several others. Good selection at any given time, and a great selection (at least for Potsdam) taken overall.

I feel guilty about rating the service low, as almost all of the bartenders I've had are both helpful and recommend good beers. But personal experience with one particular bartender blatantly ignoring customers and stories from friends had to be taken into consideration.

I go there when I can afford to, and am certainly not embarrassed to consider it "my bar" in town.
