Stopped here during a recent MI trip, after spending some time at Founders and New Holland.
Saturday night, busy, crowd seemed on the young (my age or so) side. Got seats at the bar after talking to a friendly local couple who were heading out soon. Thank you!
To the good stuff - though we had just missed the Barrel Aged event, there was still a good amount of stuff from it on the massive list. Didnt even make it to the bottles, but had: Shorts BA Black Sustenance, GI Imperial Goose, Oak- Aged Widdershins, and something else I cant recall. Everything served in appropriate glassware and good temps.
Food - we were just snacking and got some corn dogs and crack fries. CRACK FRIES. loved them, and the horseradish mustard dipping sauce that came with the corn dogs. ohmygod. I will crave these until my next trip to MI.
Service - I dont recall much but we got served rather quickly, everyone was friendly, and accurate. Nothing more to say but thank you!
Long story short, I got pretty tipsy (had a DD). Drank some fantastic beers, talked to many friendly patrons. Hands down one of if not the best beer bar I've ever been to. Will stop again for sure.

What can I say? This is my watering hole. This is where I go to celebrate, and to welcome back old friends. The atmosphere is fine, if a little loud at times. I would prefer a quite place, but most people don't so that is fine. The quality of the beer has never been an issue, and is always fresh and ever changing. The service is without par in it's beer knowledge. The standard food is fine, mostly your average bar fare, and would have received a more moderate "3", but the beer dinner food is so good that it kicks it up a point. The price is reasonable for downtown GR. HopCat is everything it is reported to be and more. Worth a trip if you are in the midwest.

Hop Cat has to be one of my favorite bars - bar none. The place has a great atmosphere and enough room to accommodate crowds. The beer selection is really good and they rotate brews rapidly - and the write updated to the beer menu on chalkboards.
We've eaten there a few times and the selection and quality is good. Once you try the "Crack Fries" you'll understand how they got their name. The staff is also good - we got to sit at the bar during one visit and had a great time chatting with the staff. The owners even stopped by (they had seen us at another bar earlier) and we compared notes on several brews. Overall a great time and a great place.

Visited during the cold days of early February, 2013.
I had read about the astounding reputation of this craft bar a few weeks before we were set to make our trip up to Grand Rapids. I knew we should probably make it a point to stop in, so we did late on a Friday night. Needless to say, we were waiting outside for a good while before we could even get inside. This place is incredibly, incredibly popular.
The atmosphere is just about perfect. High ceilings, bustling business, and about as much seating as they can cramp into such a constantly packed house are distributed throughout.
The service was about as prompt as it could possibly be for having such a high volume of patrons at one time.
The selection of all sorts of styles of craft beer is truly remarkable and reason enough to go here. I was pleasantly surprised to find Dogfish Head's 120 Minute IPA on the bottle list. I was quick to order one of those, no doubt.
It can be a bit pricey, but some of the rare finds on the menu more than make up for it.

Clearly lots of people love this place and I am no exception. Been there three times. The last time I sat inside even though it was a beautiful summer night--the bar atmosphere is just that comfortable. Two of the three times our server was a terrific gal from New Zealand (Katie?) who knows her beer and is great at engaging with drinkers on their level to recommend a good choice--from expert to beginner. I really want to try the Founders brewpub but every time I'm in town I gravitate to HopCat. Can't miss.

I just went to there first night "soft opening" and I hope this place doesn't change because I have a new favorite place in town.
BEER: WOW, 48 taps lined up down the bar is a sight to be seen! They had beers on tap that I have hard time finding in the bottle. It was very hard to pick a beer with so many favorites like Hennepin and 90min IPA on tap for the first time and tons more that I had never tried. The menu did a great job of describing the beers, I only wish they listed the BA ratings on the menu.
ATMOSPHERE: They spared no expense on this place, the detail on the custom woodwork and bar is amazing for a place this new. Most new places cut corners on the details, but here you can tell the owner took pride in everything. NO SMOKING in the main area, only in the loft. I didn't stink of smoke when I got home and I love it! I'm not sure what the crowd will be like when its open to the public, but this BA member only night had a nice mix of people.
FOOD: The food was actually the biggest surprise. I didn't expect the food to be very good on the opening night of a beer bar, but It was actually quite good. Some of the best casual dinning fare I've had in Grand Rapids.
MOUTH-FEEL: Nice light carbonation with a smooth finish....

I had the pleasure of stopping into HopCat last Wednesday on recommendation from some nice Grand Rapids locals I met at Founders (but I wanted to go anyway based on BA reviews). The bar is beautiful, very cozy, lively atmosphere. It was around 11:30 and there was a jazz band playing. The decor was very much eye candy and I loved the oversized bar stool seats.
I had trouble deciding what to get after being let down initially (not their fault). I saw Bells two-hearted on the chalk board and ordered that only to find out the board said it would be on cask tomorrow. Damn. So that threw me off and I decided to get an Oberon while I poured over the menu. Unfortunately my co-workers wanted to leave after that pint so I didn't end up having anything else, which is too bad because I could have spent all night trying beers I can't get back home in MA.
I really hope I have the opportunity to visit the area again and give this place a thorough tap by tap inspection :)
In the mean time it left me with a fantastic memory and a yearning to go back.
PS I found something very inspiring about this place. We talked with several Grand Rapids locals over the next few days. Folks that claimed to not be big beer drinkers even, and everyone recommended the HopCat. I see that has a HUGE boon to the craft beer industry. Here's a place with a drool-worthy tap and bottle selection that is attracting more than just beer geeks. Good job HopCat, this is exactly the kind of positive exposure the beer industry should be proud of! You have a great word-of-mouth following out there, keep up the good work!

First of all, thanks to Steve the beer guy and Jake our bartender for the great experience we had at the HopCat. Cool little place that I definitely felt comfortable in and would love to go back to next I'm anywhere near the area. Great draft list and many pages of fantastic bottle selections. We enjoyed a Rodenbach Grand Cru off tap followed by a couple bottles of Kentucky Breakfast Stout and then a J.W. Lees Lagavulin-cask aged ale. Amazing. Jake was very friendly, attentive, and eager to please us. He suggested several beers and served us several samples. Unfortunately, those three beers were enough for the day and I was forced to leave while still desiring to drink my way through so much more of what this place has to offer. Good grub, too. I had a very tasty breaded Tilapia sandwich and my buddy had a pork sandwich that was pretty kick ass. The decor found its pinnacle in the hodge podge of pictures in the bathroom. I kept wanting to go back to the bathroom over and over again just to look at the pictures again, and even snuck into the girls' bathroom to see if their decor was as awesome (it wasn't, though still pretty awesome).
But definitely, hands-down, the best thing about the place was the hospitality received from Jake and Steve. Thanks guys!

Man this place... I am so glad I came here today. From the south there are not too many places like this. The Brickstore in Decatur GA is the only better place I have been to this being 2nd. Soon as you walk in you are overwhelmed by the tap selection. I didnt count, but others have said 48 and its 45-50 taps on the bar. They had everything and it took me a minute to figure out what I wanted. I went with the cask they had today which was the New Holland Dragons Milk. Not too many people out on an Easter afternoon so service was awesome. Hamburger and their crack fries. I sure wish I could have gotten more fries they are awesome! Very nice bottle selection, only thing holding them back is a vintage bottle list otherwise I would have given them a 5.0. If you are ever in grand rapids go here. There are no excuses for not hitting this place up.

Amazing. This place transcends what a brewpub should be. A must stop if you like beer. No way around it.
The atmosphere was what you should see out good brewpub. It was lively and everyone seemed to be having a good time. The quality was as good as it gets. Proper glassware for the brews, the place was clean and it looked just amazing inside. Service was good, but it was the worst part about the visit. Took a little too long at the start to get the brews, but got much better after that. Could have just been buys, don't know. Selection speaks for itself. I cannot do it justice with mere words. Food was good, better than what you would usually expect out of a brewpub. Large menu as well.
Great place. a must see.
