Clear copper; light head; strong lacing throughout consumption; solid citrus on the nose; perfect up-front flavor balance; moderately hoppy; very solid sessionable beer all-in-all; the beer goes down smooth up-front too; slightly bitter on the back end; pretty straight-forward IPA offering.

Served on tap at the pub in Grand Rapids. Served in a nonic glass cool.
Pours a clear amber gem body and an off white thick head.
Fruity floral and sweet body. Taste is very similar with a profound floral herb flavor. Medium body and steady carbonation. Okay beer. Not great. Not very good representation of the style.

This is a light golden yellow. I pick up an aroma of sharp pine, followed by citrus and floral scents. It’s full of piney flavors, with a big chewy resiny finish that doesn’t quit. Definitely an IPA and a good one—in the spirit of a West Coast hop bomb. It has chew, heft, gravity and full flavor.

Had on tap at Hopcat the night before the CBS release. Served in an imperial pint glass.
A: Pours a dark amber with some lighter orange hues around the edges. Frothy white head forms on the pour and leaves a nice sticky lace down the glass.
S: Nice tropical fruits with some grapefruit. Some grass and some pine shine in there as well with a bready malt backbone.
T: The bread malt starts to take over a little bit for me in the taste, but it is still decent with the bitter hops in the middle with a light fruit rind. Finishes rather sweet.
M: Creamy and smooth with a nice carbonation. Leaves a nice fruitiness on the palate.
O: The taste was a little malty for me, but I did enjoy this beer and solid offering by Hopcat.

On-tap at Hopcat. This is quite possibly the best name for a beer ever.
Clear golden yellow-orange/light amber in color served with a nice size cream head. Lots of lacing.
Smell is citrus and piney hops with some slightly sweet caramel malt.
Upfront taste is lots of bitter grapefruit, citrus, and piney hops. Some caramel malty sweetness in the middle that follows through to the finish. Hoppy finish with pine and lemon flavors with some moderate bitterness. Lingering bitterness.
Medium body and slightly syrupy with medium carbonation. Clean finish.
Really enjoyable IPA. Good hop presence with enough malt to balance it out but not detract. Some light sweetness, but the dominant flavor is bitter hops.

Reviewed from notes on 9/17/10.
A: Hoppopotamus (love that name) pours a golden-amber hue, heavy on the gold, with a one and a half finger head that is close to pure white. The lacing has a beautiful Tolkien Elvish lilt to it. The carbonation is middling in third gear.
S: The aroma has a very clean and crisp hop profile. Sweeter citrus and tropical fruit (mainly honeydew melon) smells blend with a caramel malt aroma. A little mustiness is also present. I would say it is one of the sweeter IPAs that I've smelled.
T: Clean pine and resin-y hops assert themselves on the tip of my tongue throughout the sip, while the tropical fruit/citrus/carmel malt combination tantalizes the rest of my mouth. A little sweet of a taste for an IPA, but the bitter hops do balance the sweetness pretty well at the end of each sip.
M: This is rich, creamy, and full for the style with a swell hop dryness to clean the palate.
D: An easy drinking IPA is Hoppopotamus (love typing that name), but the sweetness would be a bit too much to have multiple drinks in a sitting. When next I journey to Hopcat, though, I will look forward to trying it again.
