dropped in this afternoon to pick up some brews for the hotel. this is by far the best selection i've seen while i've been in N.O. I spoke with who i presume was the owner. i didn't catch his name. he was more than helpful with finding some brews to make me happy. i'm going to be in N.O. for another week, and i will definitely grab a few more brews from here before i leave. here's my mini-haul:

I bought a sandwich, over $70 bucks in beer, and then found out they had Cantillon in the back. I asked for a bottle, the owner said I wasnt worthy and they were only for the regulars. He even tried testing me on what other sour beers I've had. Bottom line is great sandwich, great bottle selection, but the owner is full of himself and ruined my experience. Lame.

Best place from Texas to Pensacola.

I used to live in Pascagoula, MS, which is the arm pit of the USA. Because MS have the worst beer laws in the US I would either have to go to FL, AL, or LA to get good beer. I found this amazing place, I think, on Beer Advocate.

I called the owner, Dan Stein, to get a keg of Stone. He called me back within minutes to let me know when he could have what I wanted. My friend and I went there the next day and were amazed at how awesome the deli was. I am a vegetarian but I would get the beef tongue sandwich (special) because it was so awesome.

Dan would call a few times to let me know what he had in stock and would give me good recommendations like Moylans Hopsickle or Squatters Hop Rising.

You're not going to find a better place than this on the Gulf Coast, at least I didn't.

On my last night in New Orleans I decided to visit this store as I had heard from some BA's that Stein's had a good selection of beer. I called the shop on Monday night and asked if they offered craft beer, an employee answered and informed me that they were closed Mondays :( he told me they were having a meeting, he then asked "is beer all you needed?" I said yes, he told me to stop by the shop and he would allow me to purchase some beer.

This is my review of that place...

Atmosphere: The place was closed, the lights were dim I was in a hurry to catch a cab back to my hotel but from what I saw this place looks like it has character. I would have loved to visit this place and have one of the many sandwiches they normally offer.

Service: Awesome service by the gentleman at the register. Especially since they were closed at the time.

Selection: This is the best selection I saw in New Orleans. Well, to be fair I mostly visited stores on and around the French Quarter. If this place had been open I would have stayed and looked at every single beer they sell, I am sure I would have spent at least three times what I spent but again the place was closed and also my Girlfriend was with me so... yea!

Value: Reasonable. I wish I had taken a few more beers.

Overall: I was very satisfied with Stein's Deli! I would definitely recommend this place to craft-beer lovers!!

A great place to grab some beers, especially for the out of towners that are looking for something different, rare, sour, or whatever. The beers are all scattered about hap hazard like. Really no organization that I can tell. Up front are several tables for people to sit and eat. All the beer is stuffed in the back section.

If you like sour and funky, come here. Cantillon (you have to ask), 3 Fonteinen, Hanssens. Also stuff like Evil Twin, Stillwater, and Jolly Pumpkin. Some of the beer seems to sit around a long time, and the temperature of the place is not exactly cellar temp. So I would check freshness dates and unless it has been in the cooler avoid some of the aged selections.

The food is awesome. Lots of deli style sandwiches that are amazing. You can not drink alcohol on premiss though. The service is rushed, but they are always busy. I called a head to see if I could get a bottle of Cantillon, and they had it waiting for me. So they do care, just always a crowd here. I always stop here if I can after visiting Avenue Pub not far away in the Garden District.

Great stop this past weekend. Thanx to all the staff for their help.

This place is off the beaten path in the wonderful Lower Garden District. Take the green trolley and get off at Saint Charles and Jackson. A short 3/4 block walk up Jackson to Magazine hang a right and 3 doors down. The walk is through a beautiful historic neighborhood with several amazing old houses and churches.

It is a bit cramped and can get a bit busy so I went early in the morning before the lunch crowd formed. The service was excellent. The only reason I gave them a 4 was because their hours are a bit limited. Highly suggest checking their website for hours/days of operation before taking the walk.

For such a small place, their beer selection is amazing. Numerous shelves, coolers and even a clearance section full of hoppy awesomeness. La Trappe, Fantome, Mikeller, Saint Arnold, Evil Twin, Anchorage and on and on.

Prices are a little high, but as others have stated, chances are you'll get a discount.

Hit this place on my last day. Next time it will the second place I visit, right after I down a couple at The Avenue Pub.

Walked down from the Mardi Gras parade route on St. Charles to check this place out. I have heard nothing but good things about this place and it did not dissappoint.

The staff is pleasant and helpful. Store was a little cramped around the beer but not uncomfortably so. Just had to let people by as I was browsing the great selection. Lots of belgian stuff that I havent been able to find in my usual haunts. Only bought a couple of things because we were planning to walk back to our hotel.

The food looked and smelled great, but my wife and I had just eaten before we got there. We will definitely be back for a sandwich next time we are in town.

Stopped back in Stein's the day after I wrote the review above. I had, perhaps, the best Reuben ever made. Potato salad was great and my wife really enjoyed her sandwich too. This will be a regular place for me when visiting N.O.

This is a very very cramped space. There are two tables right next to the beer shelves. The tight quarters might make some people feel stressed while trying to browse. It didn't bother me but that's mostly because I was mesmerized by the De Struise.

I felt the prices were fairly reasonable. I went to the De Struise's store in Brugge and the price I paid at Stein's was not that different from what I paid in Belgium.

The selection is great. A lot of great Belgium style beer, a lot of the big name craft beers in America, and a great selection of local breweries.

Overall if you're in the area definitely a place worthy of checking out. Also check the web sit to see what they've recently gotten in.

We recently spent three memorable nights in New Orleans (November 10-12), staying with a pack of old high school friends at a stately rental home on nearby Carondelet Street. I was in charge of finding our lodging; the proximity of our house to Stein's (and Avenue Pub) wasn't lost on me. I'd read enough on BA and elsewhere to know that Stein's was considered among the very best in the city as both a deli and a beer shop, so the decision was an easy one.

Located at a fairly busy neighborhood corner (Jackson/Magazine), it's really not much to look at from the outside: a couple picnic tables, some skewed placards taped in the windows. Inside is a cluttered, well-worn jumble of tables and deli foods near the front counter - a traffic nightmare when busy. Warm sunlight streams through south-facing windows, highlighting a once-intricate pattern on the floor, now more bare than painted. An impressive deli counter, loaded with imported cheeses and cured meats, comes with a rather confusing system of queuing to order for a newcomer. No worries, after a visit or two we got the hang of it. Overall, loved the vibe: lively, eclectic, authentic.

Speaking of visits, I made four in less than four days. Our first stop was mid-afternoon on Thursday, the purpose solely to stock up on beer and snacks. Between four of us, we spent well over $100 filling two cases full of mixed cans and bottles (NOLA, Bayou Teche, Tin Roof, Abita for locals, plus some North Coast and Bear Republic, even a few favorite Belgians: Houblon Chouffe, Tripel Karmeliet, StB Abt 12) and cheese (manchego, aged cheddar, Humboldt Fog). Add in a few bags of Zapp's and we were set. On Saturday and Sunday I succumbed to the siren's call and returned for hot breakfast sandwiches, both times getting the ridiculously good Stoltzfus (corned beef one day, pastrami the next, both with egg, swiss and spicy mustard on an everything bagel) - just thinking about it now has my mouth watering. On the final visit, Sunday afternoon (post Saints OT victory), my friend and I split a Reuben and a Kelly (girly name, delicious sandwich). As good as the beer selection was, the food at Stein's is every bit its equal.

Besides the ample sampling of local beers we bought, I practiced a great deal of restraint by not buying a ton more from the beer aisles (well, racks, there are two of them loaded with many rare/obscure imports from across Europe and the US PLUS four or five reach-in coolers). Lots from Belgium, Scandinavia and the UK, even a few paper-wrapped bottles of Sink the Bismarck and Tactical Nuclear Penguin.

I guess the only 'flaw' any of us noted was a general brusqueness with service. Yeah, I get that it's a busy deli and, yeah, the owner (Dan) hails from the East Coast, but would it hurt to smile, or say 'thanks'? I will admit they were fast and efficient behind the counter and that one younger guy taking orders was as exceedingly friendly. Oh well, I won't belabor the point too much, guess I'm just used to better most everywhere I go out here in Portland.

No doubt, if we lived in New Orleans, Stein's would be a regular stop, such good food and that excellent, inspired beer lineup. Can't wait to visit again!

P.S. We did find it odd that there was no on-site consumption of alcohol allowed... especially in a city that encourages drinking just about everywhere!

Had been planning for a visit to Stein's for months. When I finally found a parking place on the side of the building, I wasn't quite prepared for the cramped quarters. This place is super-tight, folks. But the atmosphere more than makes up for the sardine can feel.

Couldn't decide whether I wanted to buy beer first or order a sandwich. Got the muffaletta, which was a bit pricy at $10.99, considering it didn't come with anything and the size wasn't very big. A tasty sandwich, nonetheless. Sat at a very small table amidst bombers and boxes of beer. Got very ADD.

As far as beer selection, it's there, all over the place, in the middle of the store, in refrigerated coolers, on shelves in the corner. Lots of stuff you won't find anywhere else, ripe for the plucking.

The owner was working the cash register and when we told him we were from Mississippi to buy beer, he gave us a nice discount.

Overall, Stein's has an old-world, carnival house atmosphere, replete with great sandwiches and world class beer at slightly inflated prices. The discount does make a difference. If you're only shopping for beer, don't go during lunch.
